Praying for China
A friend of Abraham Piper’s working in Beijing writes:
What will the next two weeks bring? Fame and disappointment for athletes; fun and excitement for fans; ulcers and headaches for the leadership of the country as they work hard to live up to their promise of a “safe Olympics.”
Another thing that the coming weeks will bring is prayer. To help with the worldwide prayer effort, I would like to recommend a resource that can be used during the games. “China Games and Beyond” (PDF) is a 40-day prayer journal designed to focus prayer on China during the Olympic and Paraolympic games that run from August 8 to September 17. (You can also order a hard copy.)
Each day features a specific sport and prayer requests for Chinese athletes and coaches as well as the Chinese church. Each entry also includes a meditation and prayer from John Piper’s Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ and questions for reflection. …
There is glory to be seen in these games, but it belongs to the Creator alone.

That’s typical Christian hyperbolic nonsense. Is it God that worked out, trained, and practiced self denial for years on end to get to the winner’s podium? No, it was the athlete, and they deserve kudos for their dedication and hard work. Even if you want to claim that it’s only by the grace of God that they’re alive, have talent, etc., fine. But it takes a lot more than talent to win. It takes years of focus and dedication and denial to get there. And it’s not God running for all he’s worth until he throws up; it’s the athlete. It’s asinine to say only God deserves any glory or credit for their achievement.

I got a bracelet from an organization in the mail yesterday that reads “Pray For China” in both English and Chinese. I spent a month in southern China doing missionary work, and know there is great potential for lives being turned to Christ. My prayers will be with the athletes and spectators, that God will be glorified through the events.

The devil made me say the following:
worked out, trained, and practiced self denial for years on end…
Not to mention the crooked doctors and trainers sneaking in the steroids and growth hormones.
OK. I can’t tell a lie. I wrote the above using only my own wicked brain chemistry.

I’m not sure who sent it to me, Bianca, but if you’d like to contact me (Lynn Vincent has my contact info) I can mail it to you.

What an idiot. As I’ve told you, specifically, before, I’m a deist. Quit lying about me.

China’s athletic goals and talents for these games lean more to the individual events and contests. The USA’s goals and talents lean a little to the team sport contests. Of course, both will be involved in both. While this differece may be slight, it is still observable and interesting since the USA values individualism so much more and China. as a culture, values conformity and group precision.

I do pray for safety. One of the most egregious evils of all time was when the PLO massacred most of the entire Israeli Olympic team in Munich and no one wants this sort of thing ever again.
The policy of putting politics aside for other accomplishments is good for the world, even if only symbolic for some. The point is, there is so much more to life, and to nations, than politics.
The best kind of politics is the kind that is limited enough so that it CAN be set aside for other accomplishments. Politics are important, but the “politics are everything” approaches prevelent in this world are the worst sort of politics. That’s one reason why limited gov’t is healthy. Leave lots of room for sport, art, faith, family and freedom in the private sector.
Just a general thought.

Night Train: According to your posts on this blog it would be understanding that anyone would refer to you as an atheist.
Try not calling Justus a “liar” and an “idiot” and maybe he will listen to what you are saying and call you a Deist (however you happen to define it).
BTW, how would you define it?

BTW, I’m glad the born-again Christians on this blog have found the source of the “Pray for China” bracelets I mentioned earlier. My wife is wearing ours now, and is grateful I didn’t mail it to someone else.

The ancient Greeks abolished their Olympics because they had become so corrupt and generally disgusting.
What made people in the modern world think restarting them would turn out in a different fashion escapes me.
