I have been composing a random piece of music on the theme, “Why do you post comments to WOW?” when no one seems to be convinced of anything. One person said something along the lines of , Perhaps a lurker is reading and secretly agreeing with my wise messages.
I asked lurkers to write to me and I said I would report on their experiences while protecting their lurking anonymity. One person wrote to me and I am going to make a report.
I need to be very careful here. I will describe the person as they. English is an odd language, and sometimes English pronouns are sexually ambiguous. I am not going to go there as (everyone knows) I am very tolerant in these matters and I really don’t care what pronouns do in the closet or between the sheets
The person is a very sensitive and vulnerable person. They is a Christian. Theyposts an occasional message. I find those comments to be intelligent and stimulating messages, though as usual, as I am not a religious believer, I don’t find myself in agreement with some of their conclusions, though nothing in the messages offend me (as some messages on WOW do offend me.)
I occasionally exchange email messages with conservative Christians. One of the most active exchanges I had was with VS (Vicky), who recently died. We talked about being parents and grandparents, about being spouses. She asked if my wife and I had been hippies. (I think she had been one, though she became a born-again Christian as a young adult.)
In my email exchanges with WOW Christians I am very polite (as they are to me). They became friendly with me in our short time of exchanging messages, but also was perturbed by my rather nasty way of posting comments. They was shocked that I referred to somebody as a “whacko.” I explained that 1) I was making fun of a regular poster who calls people, especially liberals, “whackos.” They said I don’t read that person’s comments any more. I explained that I consider WOW to be something like a “blogbiker bar” where gang members hang out and beat up on each other.
I like they. They has had some hardships and difficulties in life, including partly incapacitating physical illness. There may have been other problems; I don’t know and I am not going to pry. My impression is that they is a fine and brave person.
They said I like “S” (the first letter of my real name), the nice person I met in email, but I don’t like Random, the tough blogbiker who hangs out in the WOW blogbiker bar.
I said, both polite “S” and nasty Random are all part of the real me.
Although our relationship was perfectly proper, it was a little bit like “dating,” and as sometimes happens when people date, we decided to back off from each other before we got serious. We are not going to keep “seeing” each other, but we left the door open to exchange an email now and then.

As a sensitive and vulnerable person, they is distressed by the atmosphere of blogbiker bar WOW. I don’t know what to do about that problem. They is seeking something at WOW. I don’t like to say anything hurtful to they, but I am not sure what they is seeking can be found at WOW. However, when people “whack” at each other when they post comments, they might think about quiet and sensitive lurkers they may be whacking by accident.
Mothers against whacko driving say, Don’t drive whacked.

Hey, everybody!
I’ve come to ask for advice. I’ll be back after school to see all your answers.
Question 1) How do you harvest herbs? Me and my mom have been growing some, and the cilantro is READY.
Question 2) What are some good sources for current events about the election? They have to be a reputable news source that changes daily. (And don’t say a newspaper, because we don’t get any.) I have an assignment due every Monday for History. Don’t give me an article, because I think that would be cheating.
Thank you!

One way to harvest herbs is to tie the stems with string and then put a paper bag over that end with the stem poking out a hole in the bottom of the bag. Hang them by the string in a dark, dry place until dried. The bag keeps the dust off of them. You can then crush or strip the stems and store. I have never done this with cilantro, so hopefully, someone else may be more specific about that. There is probably tons of info on this online, too.

I just freeze the cilantro and it’s always fine, like any kind of parsley.

For the horserace aspect of the race, you really can’t beat Marc Ambinder at theAtlantic.com. He’s pretty neutral as to campaigns and gets good insight.
Opinion Journal covers, but on an infrequent basis. National Review (from a conservative side) will give you more complete insight. For something a little left of center, consider stopping by The New Republic (tnr.com). They often complement the National Review.
Heretical as it sounds, you may also want to sign up for MyTimes. this is more a portal site, but it gives you the top stories at the NYT, Yahoo News, BBC, and then you can create your own page filled with the blogs of your choice. That’s smart aggregation.
And if you aren’t tapped into the Google Reader or news alert system, look into it. You tell Google what you want to track (e.g. McCain Energy Policy) and tell it what news sources to use, and it collects them all. WARNING — Reader is very much like Dr. Seuss’s ooblick; if you don’t take care of it daily it grows and grows and grows.

How many Herbs have you got?
How do you ‘harvest’ them?
What do you do with them once they are harvested?
I know a guy named Herb and I am pretty sure he would object to being harvested.
You wouldn’t get much out of HIM, anyway, what with him being so scrawny and wiry.
He is pretty smart and suspicious, too, so I am not sure that it would not be a great deal of trouble just to corral him, so he could be properly harvested.
Anyway, good luck (I suppose) with harvesting your Herbs.

I freeze the cilantro. When you want to use it, take it out and chop it while it’s still frozen. It’s easier to chop when it’s still frozen. If you’re drying your herbs, do what KI suggested in #7.

OpTeen, first, it’s “mom and I”. You should learn that early. My granddaughter is a college graduate and taught our kids before she decide to stay at home and raise them. She says “me and mom”. These personlal pronouns give lots of trouble.

Kayvee, et al
I would much rather hear someone say “She gave it to me and mom” than to hear “She gave it to mom and I” so putting the other person first doesn’t solve much. I hear “I” misused like this way too often and it’s like the proverbial fingernails on a chalkboard to me.
Report comment to moderator
But “me and Mom” is correct, isn’t it?
I try the sentence both ways when I’m confused between me and I. “She gave it to I,” doesn’t sound right, so “She gave it to mom and I” wouldn’t be correct.
“She gave it to me,” would work, so “She gave it to mom and me,” would be correct.
I’m sure Kyle and Cheryl could explain, grammatically, why that is correct. I use my ear, because my degree is in English literature.
Report comment to moderator
What I have been taught is that you put the first person pronoun last, and that you use the same pronoun (I or me) that you would use if it was a simple subject.
Report comment to moderator
When used as a subject the pronoun is I, when used as an object of the verb the pronoun is me. When you remove the other pronoun, its easier to understand which pronoun to use. Ex

This question was asked of both candidates at the forum hosted by Rick Warren.
Obama answered in the affirmative and cited Darfur, our streets, our own hearts as examples for where evil existed. Obama continued to say that we cannot “erase evil from the world. That is God’s task. But we can be soldiers in that process, and we can confront (evil) when we see it.”
Jonah Goldberg opined: “Imagine if President Bush called himself a soldier of God in the battle against evil.”

Barack Obama’s ‘lost’ brother found in Kenya
Senator Barack Obama’s long lost brother has been tracked down for the first time living in a shanty town in Kenya, reports claimed.
Telegraph.co.uk
By Nick Pisa in Rome
20 Aug 2008
The Italian edition of Vanity Fair said that it had found George Hussein Onyango Obama living in a hut in a ramshackle town of Huruma on the outskirts of Nairobi.
Mr Obama, 26, the youngest of the presidential candidate’s half-brothers, spoke for the first time about his life, which could not be more different than that of the Democratic contender.
“No-one knows who I am,” he told the magazine, before claiming: “I live here on less than a dollar a month.”
According to Italy’s Vanity Fair his two metre by three metre shack is decorated with football posters of the Italian football giants AC Milan and Inter, as well as a calendar showing exotic beaches of the world.
Vanity Fair also noted that he had a front page newspaper picture of his famous brother – born of the same father as him, Barack Hussein Obama, but to a different mother, named only as Jael.
He told the magazine: “I live like a recluse, no-one knows I exist.”
He has only met his famous older brother twice - once when he was just five and the last time in 2006 when Senator Obama was on a tour of East Africa and visited Nairobi.
The Illinois senator mentions his brother in his autobiography, describing him in just one passing paragraph as a “beautiful boy with a rounded head”.
Of their second meeting, George Obama said: “It was very brief, we spoke for just a few minutes. It was like meeting a complete stranger.”

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s we can’t do anything about our relatives . . .
Report comment to moderator
Michelle, we CAN help our relatives, especially our sisters and brothers. It makes no difference how well one might know a sibling, — when you see a kid needs help you just ‘do it’ – you find ways to help.
You can’t play the game of ‘helping everyone else’ and then blind yourself to your own family. A 24 year old person who meets his brother from the U.S.A. as an adult, must have been impressed with his older brother.
Younger brother George Hussein Onyango Obama said —– “It was very brief, we spoke for just a few minutes.” ——
Barack Obama talks about helping everyone else, he has lofty plans, but his own brother is just a “few minutes” -

On me vs I: HRW has the best explanation in #21, I won’t add to the subject vs object usage, but the possessive. I have heard someone say “my wife and I’s house.” Most likely this was caused by overemphasis of the “xxx and I” mantra we all heard as children.

A couple of years ago I got a huge wreath of fresh bay leaves for Christmas from a friend who is a chef that owed me money. That is the only time a chef ever gives you anything for any reason because they are always feeding you – you don’t even have to ask for a taste or nothing either. Who else would send a gift like that?
I left it on the front door through the holiday season and the next thing you know, I had dried bay leaves for 1,000 families – for 1,000 years. I took it down and hung it in the kitchen. When ever I needed a bay leaf, or a million – there they were. It was a super gift and he eventually paid me too – another first.
I came home one weekend and my wife had thrown it away – I didn’t notice till I needed a leaf though. I was just speechless and all I could say was ‘Hey Honey, what did you do with the bay leaves? You What? You do remember you are not allowed to throw anything away that is mine – not ever – right? If I remember correctly, besides all your other rules we aren’t talking about, that is the only rule you have to follow since we got married. I don’t ask for much (my favorite line)- try to remember it – OK?’
But, I made sure it wasn’t a hour that had passed before I somehow ran out of bay leaves and just had to have them. Who would have guessed? I sent her to the store to buy some – and she could not say no even though there was fire coming out of her eyeballs and our Doxie went into convulsions. What a weak sister.
When she saw the price she had to pay for them, she just had to die but she didn’t say anything. What she paid for a few bay leaves made that wreath worth $2,000 – and they were great bay leaves too.
She still throws my stuff away though and the Doxie is still stupid

Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while shopping and it turned out to be quite
traumatic. Don’t be naive enough to think it couldn’t happen to you.
Here’s how the scam works:
Two very hot girls come over to your car as you’re packing your
shopping into the trunk. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and
Windex, with their cleavage almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. It’s
impossible not to look. When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say
‘No’ and instead ask you for a ride to another store. You agree
and they get in the back seat. On the way, they start undressing. Then one of
them climbs over into the front seat and starts crawling all over you, while
the other one steals your wallet.
I had my wallet stolen May 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th &
24th. Also June 1st, 4th, twice on the 8th, 16th, 23rd, 24th, three times last
Saturday and very likely again this weekend.
So tell your friends to be careful.
P.S. Wal-Mart has wallets on sale 2.99 each

Bush denies McCain was tortured
In all the discussion of John McCain’s recently recovered memory of a religious epiphany in Vietnam, one thing has been missing. The torture that was deployed against McCain emerges in all the various accounts. It involved sleep deprivation, the withholding of medical treatment, stress positions, long-time standing, and beating. Sound familiar?
According to the Bush administration’s definition of torture, McCain was therefore not tortured.
Cheney denies that McCain was tortured; as does Bush. So do John Yoo and David Addington and George Tenet. In the one indisputably authentic version of the story of a Vietnamese guard showing compassion, McCain talks of the agony of long-time standing. A quarter century later, Don Rumsfeld was putting his signature to memos lengthening the agony of “long-time standing” that victims of Bush’s torture regime would have to endure. These torture techniques are, according to the president of the United States, merely “enhanced interrogation.”
No war crimes were committed against McCain. And the techniques used are, according to the president, tools to extract accurate information. And so the false confessions that McCain was forced to make were, according to the logic of the Bush administration, as accurate as the “intelligence” we have procured from “interrogating” terror suspects. Feel safer?

Brrr! Farmers’ Almanac says cold winter ahead
By The Associated Press wire report
August 20, 2008 02:26 PM
“This is going to be catastrophic for millions of people,” said almanac editor Peter Geiger, noting that the frigid forecast combined with high prices for heating fuel is sure to compound problems households will face in keeping warm.
The almanac predicts above-normal snowfall for the Great Lakes and Midwest, especially during January and February, and above-normal precipitation for the Southwest in December and for the Southeast in January and February. The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions should be getting an unusually wet or snowy February, the almanac said.

My attention was caught by the following at the end of the article.
The almanac’s winter forecast is at odds with that of the National Weather Service, whose trends-based outlook calls for warmer than normal temperatures over much of the country, including Alaska, said Ed O’Lenic, chief of the operations branch at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.
While he wouldn’t comment specifically on the almanac’s ability to forecast the weather two years from now, O’Lenic said it’s generally impossible to come up with accurate forecasts more than a week in advance.
“Of course it’s possible to prepare a forecast with any lead time you like. Whether or nor that forecast has any accuracy or usable skill is another question,” he said.
Your mileage may vary and if you are not skilled at winter driving, you may skid off the road.
Or as my wife says when she hears a weather forecast:

By a nearly six-to-one margin, voters say Republican presidential candidate John McCain is running a negative campaign against his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, according to the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.
Nearly three in 10 voters, 29%, pointed to McCain as the candidate running a negative campaign, compared to just 5% who said Obama is running a negative campaign. McCain’s 29% rating is the highest of any one candidate in the previous two presidential elections according to the WSJ/NBC News survey.

The reason I don’t find many jokes very funny may possibly be attributed to the fact that my sense of humor is slightly different than most, but GL’s attempt to be humorous is sadly lacking, if you ask me. Plus, like Lynn said, it’s not something that should be on here. (why didn’t she delete it if it doesn’t belong, I wonder?)
How about this: In the case that there were children reading this blog, (not that they are or should be) would you want them to pick up everything they see?
On my list of humor (or attempted humor), Drill is way, way in the lead, with the Llama trying his hardest to make up for lost time and catch up (so far he has yet to succeed), and Mr. Lumps is even further behind. The following rather startling obituary appeared recently in the Times Herald newspaper of Vallejo, California. The obituary so shocked newspaper staff, they worried that it might be a hoax and insisted on seeing a death certificate before they would publish it. Even after they published it, they then removed it from the paper’s on line edition.
It was later published in a San Francisco alternative newspaper. I heard it read on a Seattle radio station
The shocking part of the obituary starts in the third paragraph.
Text as it appeared [some names omitted]:
Dolores Aguilar, born in 1929 in New Mexico, left us on August 7, 2008. She will be met in the afterlife by her husband, Raymond, her son, Paul Jr., and daughter, Ruby.
She is survived by [list of 7 children, 19 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren].
Dolores had no hobbies, made no contribution to society and rarely shared a kind word or deed in her life. I speak for the majority of her family when I say that her presence will not be missed by many, very few tears will be shed, and there will be no lamenting over her passing.
Her family will remember Dolores and amongst ourselves we will remember her in her own way, which were mostly sad and troubling times throughout the years. We may have some fond memories of her and perhaps we will think of those times too. But I truly believe at the end of the day ALL of us will really only miss what we never had, a good and kind mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. I hope she is finally at peace with herself. As for the rest of us left behind, I hope this is the beginning of a time of healing and learning to be a family again.
There will be no service, no prayers and no closure for the family she spent a lifetime tearing apart. We cannot come together in the end to see to it that her grandchildren and great-grandchildren can say their goodbyes. So I say here for all of us, GOODBYE, MOM.

In case anyone is curious, I am leaning toward voting for a presidential candidate not endorsed by the worst president in American history.
Being careful with the grammar, I have to ask, “Whom has Jimmy Carter endorsed?”

Excellent info HRW.
So much for that St. McCain Myth.
Why won’t he release his service records. Didn’t the neo-cons badger Kerry into releasing his in 04?
Goose and Gander stuff.
If he won’t release them he is hiding some very important information from the voters.

Wrong Stubob. Carter is a distant second behind George W. Bush, obviously.

RN, you had some good humor a while back, but have held off recently. Get back into it and you may get the silver medal.

John McCain’s big idea for energy independence is offering $300 million to anyone who can come up with a car battery that can replace our dependence on oil.
Great.
But, as usual, McCain’s a dollar short, 86 years late and running on empty.
In 1920, the Steinmetz Electric Car Co. of Brooklyn, founded by Charles Steinmetz, a brilliant Polish-German physicist and mathematician who came to America in June 1889 and pioneered alternating current, or AC, demonstrated his first electrical truck on a steep hill in Brooklyn.
Steinmetz published his “Law of Hysteresis,” or “Steinmetz’s Law” – a fundamental law of magnetism that allows for the loss of electrical power in an engine due to magnetism to be calculated and minimized, and helped create today’s long-distance power grids – in the American Institute of Electrical Engineering’s periodical called “Electrical Engineer” in 1892.

Random Name, that is about the saddest obituary I’ve ever seen. I can’t imagine a life that was completely useless to anyone. Everybody has to mean something to somebody.
Sad, that’s all I can say, sad.

OpTeen, I should apologize for creating the fuss that I did back in #15. But I’m not sorry. You’ll note that I said I correct my granddaughter, it’s because I love her. That’s what curmudgeons (grouchy old men) do. Besides, you want to impress the college board.
(I once heard on the radio an announcement that “A program will be presented by Dr. Jones and I….” I didn’t go.)

#80 I am not always brief, including my humorous efforts, and people complain. So some of my best (or worst, season to taste) efforts go on my own blog, to be briefer here.
I am now sometimes briefer than llama, at least.

Random – That was a very sad obituary, indeed.
My pastor cut out & kept an obit of a woman written by her husband. He wrote some wonderful words about his beloved wife. I hope he said those words to her while she was alive.

Yes, very sad obit
I am glad I was able to find some positive things to say about my mother after she died, although my overall sense was of missing “what we never had” as that obit-writer said. Even when she reached out to people mostly so that they would love her in return, she did reach out to them, and I know there were lonely people who did appreciate that. She always said she was doing the best she could, and one wise person (who became a sort of “foster mother” to me) said she figured my mother must be telling the truth, because no one would intentionally be as miserable as my mother was.
