XION: I’m not finding a problem on our end on any of the pages. Which page are you referring to specifically: the main Community page showing the two columns of WMB and Commentary posts, or the single column WMB page? Also, what browser are you using? Thanks for your patience.

For example, on this page: http://online.worldmag.com/cat/worldmagblog/
Clicking the “Comments” link brings you here:

However, it’s not the comment page and clicking on the “Comments” link for today’s Whirled Views goes nowhere (same page). This is on Firefox 2.0.0.16 but it doesn’t look like a browser issue to me.
I can still click on the title of the post and get in here though.

Same thing here. On the 2 column WorldMag.com Community page, I can click on the “Comments” and be able to view them, however, once I go to the single column “WorldMagBlog” page, when I click on the “Comments” that is on the right side at the top of the post, nothing happens. When I click on “Comments” at the bottom of the post, I can view the comments. I am using Firefox 3.0.1 as my browser.

Did y’all notice USC jumped to #1 in the AP and USA Today polls!?
What a day it will be in LA when Ohio state comes to town! We’ll take the train into Union Station, catch breakfast at the Pantry, take another gander at all those Heisman’s in Heritage hall, follow the Spirit of Troy over to the Coliseum and watch one of the best and decisive games of the season. And it’s only September. I love this time of year.
Oh, and did you know that if USC were its own country it would have ranked 13th in medals in Beijing? Just saying . . .

Well, it’s hard to know where to go with such a provocative statement, Mrs. Adios . . .
Say hi to the coliseum for me; I can’t believe I haven’t been there since the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in 1984!
In my miserable summer cold delirium yesterday I read an interesting book on the order of Endurance (Shakelton’s epic story). This was called The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom by Slavomir Rawicz.
It tells the WWII story of Polish cavalry officer Rawicz’ escape from the Soviet Gulag with five others and their walk from northern Siberia to India! Aided by the sympathetic wife of the camp officer, “Just escape while my husband is away so he doesn’t get the blame,” the men spent nearly a year on their long hike–picking up an escaping Polish woman prisoner on the way, crossing the Gobi Desert without water and then up into Tibet.
The writing is not as good as Endurance, but the story truly amazing.

I often say something or do something without realizing what my intuition is telling me until later.
I have been puzzling why many people post comments to wmb without being able to explain why they do so. Some people are able to provide reasonable explanations, but many cannot. A few post indignant complaints about my questioning them.
A while back, I took a six month break from wmb. I realized that I am addicted to participating here. My break was my way of saying, “I can stop any time I want,” a typical statement by addicts.
I now realize that many people who participate here are addicts. It’s something like being addicted to cigarettes, though it probably won’t ruin your lungs (though it might be hard on your marriage or relationship with other family members). I don’t smoke, though I tend to eat more than I should. (I have lost weight over the last six months though.)
Symptoms may include:
Inability to explain why you post.
Excessive frequency of posting. I’m guessing that more than 10 posts a day is a pretty good sign of this addiction. I am going to try limiting myself to no more than 10 posts a day. This might be something equivalent to smoking less than a pack a day.
Compulsion to engage in races to the bottom or other signs of bad temper, hostility and negativity. I am trying to post at least one race to the top (RTT) post a day among my 10 posts, though I’m not sure that this one qualifies. In my case, excessive joking and mirth is probably another sign, so I will try to post at least one serious post a day. For many other people, who seem to be humor-impaired, the prescription might be to post at least one humorous post a day, or at least laugh at something (not unkindly) at least once a day.
Are you addicted to wmb participation and commenting? How does your addiction manifest itself? Is it affecting others? Are you taking any action in regard to the addiction?
You may flame me for this post if it makes you feel better.

LOL Random. For me its kind of like watching a train wreck at times, you just can’t look away. Many years ago now when I was in college and watching the Moral Majority and Christian Coalition do their thing, I told several friends that I thought in the end that what they were doing would be bad for the Church and would confuse Christians about their faith.
When I read posters here, I see that my fears were warranted as the movement has become much more virulent. Last night the republican convention featured a christian singer singing songs not about the country or patriotism but about her faith. There is a place for that — if the convention had wanted to hold a side event or even religious services as a side event every day, well good on them, but on the convention floor I believe the mixing of religion and politics is out of place and a symptom of just where mixing the two is taking the conservatives and along with them a once great party. It’s not Ronald Reagan’s party anymore.

PAULINE!, It works! I should have thought of that. I just clicked your name, and there it was.
Michelle, I read The Long Walk some time ago. Fascinating story. But it iritated me to know that these officers did not know how to find the north star, nor that they would have to cross a desert if they continued going directly south. (That part is more difficult because they may not have known their starting point.) It would have made their trek better if they could have traveled at night.
As for your post yesterday, you may have enjoyed the ending of the game, but surely you didn’t enjoy the way UCLA played.
Report comment to moderator
Oh Chas, only the first half. In the second half UCLA looked pretty good. And you have to fully credit the D and special teams in the first half for keeping them in the game.

I shouldn’t say this as a USC fan, but what I liked about UCLA’s win was watching a QB who was at Mt. SAC last year get his legs on a ranked team. And I liked that Neuheisel (sp?) told him at halftime, “I threw four picks at the beginning of my career too.”

it certainly isn’t, never was and never will be your party so I would just forget all about it, be happy and quit complaining about things you will never ever have any control over.
It’s like your complaining about Christian reaction to gay issues on this blog. Christian’s are not going to ever accept lesbianism as being OK, natural or not a sin so get over it. We will be praying for you instead.

Yeah, I think the Vols were surprised by the Bruin defense. I wonder if UCLA will wind up having one of the best D’s this year.

The complaint is really over the disappearance of a reasonable center in the republican party. I liked H.W. Bush on both his domestic and foreign policy fronts. I was ok with Reagan. I liked Dole.
As to the other, I’ve not said that I expected Christians on this blog would accept lesbsianism as being ok or natural or not a sin, but that I think the way the express themselves does not help make their case for being loving and all. Not sure why you raise it and don’t really care to know how a wingnut’s mind works, so, you know, whatever.
Report comment to moderator
Random,
I’m not sure if I answered your question before about why I comment here, but I was thinking about it yesterday and came up with an answer to offer if you asked again.
To me, there’s two parts of it, why I come to this blog daily and read at least some of the threads, and then why I sometimes add my own comments.
I come here to hear different points of view, most of which I would not encounter in the course of my daily life. There is a huge range of viewpoints here on all kinds of topics, from theology to politics to family to entertainment. I want both the intellectual stimulation of thinking about things in different ways, and to better understand other people.
As for why I comment, that’s not much different from why I would join a conversation in the breakroom at work, or among a group of friends sitting around chatting. If the subject is interesting and I have something I think worthwhile to add to the conversation, I say it. If I manage to find a gap in the conversation that I can slip in without interrupting, that is. In that regard, it’s easier to be part of the conversation here, because timing doesn’t matter so much.

Ah CB, so nice to know there’s another UCLA fan on board.
I’m like Pauline, I read to learn other viewpoints. Like CB, I’m disappointed at the aggressively negative posting by some Christians. When I met Lynn she asked me why I post, and I explained that it was like hanging out at the watercooler during the day–when I’m home writing in the summer, I’m looking for some distraction from time to time.
Like Random, I took seven months off several years ago when the hostility levels started affecting my personal spiritual life. I got so upset, I wrote to Marvin Olasky to complain.
But, I returned . . . and remain. I limit myself, however, and don’t respond to certain posters, don’t reply to specific subjects and find myself praying for some of you more than I do my relatives.
But I sure wish we could all get along . . .

I over did it, and am in bed with a migraine.
I have to do something about my impossible, unhealthy/over-committed Tuesdays.
It’s hard to be a person of your word, over-commit, only to realize that somethings got to give.
I don’t usually do this. The scholarship went to my head, I think. And now I’m stuck with a schedule I can’t endure, physically. Even my 20 year old male colleague was hurting badly by 10 pm.
I’m more than twice his age. My professor let us know early on that if we dropped any of his classes, we’d make him look bad.
I should also mention that the amount of homework is extreme. I’m not doing this for a degree. I already have my degree.
What would you do?
Report comment to moderator
I think your professor’s comment is a clear sign that you should at least consider dropping the class–why would he say that if he didn’t already have a problem within his department/administration? If you’re not doing it for a degree, is it worth the way you feel? I’ve always felt that voluntary education should be rewarding and even, yes, fun. Can you talk to a department head or equivalent about your concerns?
Report comment to moderator
EYG, Are you doing this for fun and personal enrichment only? If so, check on auditing the class. Then you could attend class and do some of the assignments, but you wouldn’t be obligated to do all the homework or even attend all the classes. Explain the problem to the professor and if he can’t deal with it, oh well…you have to do what you have to do.

They will come here to post more gleeful praise of her and more wildly offbase diagnoses of liberals being sacred, upset, angry, whatever.
What they will not realize until it’s too late is that for every one of them who have been drawn to the McCain ticket with enthusiam thanks to the addition of Palin, three others who had previously been passionate about McCain because he was finally a Republican who was not a rightwing extremist will be having grave doubts about whether they want to continue to support the ticket.
And when Barack Obama takes the oath of office in January, the Outkasts and Llamas of the world will have no idea what went wrong.

ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 2 — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was not subjected to a lengthy in-person background interview with the head of Sen. John McCain’s vice presidential vetting team until last Wednesday in Arizona, the day before McCain asked her to be his running mate, and she did not disclose the fact that her 17-year-old daughter was pregnant until that meeting, two knowledgeable McCain officials acknowledged Tuesday.
McCain did not speak face to face with Palin until Thursday morning, at his retreat in Sedona, Ariz.

As a Christian it pains me to say this but I have never really encountered a homosexual person who despised me on sight. I had one who didn’t particularly like me at first, something about him being an uppity yankee who looked down his nose at southerners and me being a sweet, charming southern belle with a voice dripping with honey and magnolias. Eventually we reached a truce and he is a lot of fun dishing on the gossip and talking trash. Other than him I have found most of the gay people I know to be welcoming and accepting of me. Too, bad I can’t say that for some or a lot of the Christians I know. Coyote Blue I would love to pray for you. I imangine every now and then God likes to hear us pray for someone else other than me, me, me and I want, want, want all the time. Luke, I have already told you that I look at your name, roll my eyes, and think here we go again, but you really got me with a terrific zinger one day and I had to laugh at you. (By the way it was directly aimed at me, but it sure was funny.)
I have so called “Christianss” right in my own father’s family that have not spoken to “family”. I guess my point is that we can all disagree but let’s at least be nice about it. I had to remove myself from some of the Palin discussion yesterday because a few thought the little ol’ woman should stay home and tend her youngin’s. I don’t know what kind of lilly white lives the rest of you live but I have had a few family members and a few friends who have either “gotten in trouble” or had children who did. One of the saddest things I have ever witnessed was an older family member who had gotten pregnant in 1954. Her fiance was sent to Korea. He came home mentally disturbed. She had a little boy in June of 1955 in a Catholic hospital. She was going to give the child up for adoption when her mother marched into the hospital and demanded her grandson. The grandparents went on to raise the child but held it over their daughters head for the rest of her life. She died a broken, bitter, confused alcoholic. Is that what we wish for the Palin family????

Why she hired a lobbyist with ties to Jack Abramoff?
Why she is listed on the incorporation papers for corruption indicted Senator Ted Stevens 527 PAC that seeks corporate donations?

The thing I don’t understand is why the Democrats are attacking Palin so badly. In one of two ways, they’re shooting themselves in the foot. America just met Ms. Palin a couple days ago and has a right to check her out thoroughly before we hand her the keys to the White House. Let’s make sure she is fit to be President if McCain, now in his 73rd year, checks out.
Her resume is a bit thin. Let’s look at how she has taken earmarks and how that squares with her “reformer” narrative. How she founded the 527 for Ted Stevens, a Senator indicted for corruption. How she hired an Abramoff lobbyist. Let’s see if the courts agree she abused her power in a retributive act.
McCain is known for being hot-headed and sometimes making rash decisions. This may well be another one.

Hmm. WoW wants to be known as a place to discuss the big breaking news stories of the day. You’d think they’d have a post up by now about one of America’s most well known conservatives columnists caught lying in print. But for some strange reason, I can’t find any posts about it.
Report comment to moderator
C’mon guys, Mickey, whoever. What possible excuse can you have for not writing about this story? Your silence on Noonan’s hypocrisy speaks volumes.

Say, wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that the conservatives on here were criticizing the MSM for ignoring the John Edward’s affair story, until he admitted it? The MSM said they ignored it because it came from the National Enquirer. Well now the Enquirer has a story claiming that Sarah Palin had an affair with her husband’s business partner. I’ll watch for the conservatives on her to start criticizing the mainstream media for ignoring this story about a politician having an affair.

Of course, I wouldn’t dare make any predictions on the outcome of November 4th. But if The Miracle happens and Obama is elected (and it would be my first acknowledgment that Miracles do occur), I will so be here to laugh my head off. Then on November 5th, we’re gonna start questioning the loyalty and and patriotism of anyone who criticizes President Obama, like y’all did to us with Bush.

How noble. And mature.

Lumpy, I want you to look closely at Palin. But how long can you look at her daughter’s baby bump? There’s got to be more to Palin than her kids, and that’s all fair game.

The National Enquirer — yes, Victoria’s trusted news source that broke the John Edwards Affair — has a story on Sarah Palin’s affair with her husband’s business partner.
“The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Governor Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false,” Schmidt said. “It is a vicious lie. Governor Palin is the most popular governor in the country.”
Outkast, where is Victoria today?

Her baby bump? See #77. I’m more concerned she’s just like Ted Stevens, who is under indictment for corruption. Let’s look long and hard.

Will she do it tonight at the RNC?

I just lost an old friend–Mike Barnhart–after a long fight with brain cancer. Please pray for his family (mother and sister especially). Mike’s mother also lost her husband earlier this year.
Mike and I were roommates in the summer of 1974 sellin’ Bibles door to door in Gulfport, Mississippi. I know I’ll never live that down with some of our WOW bloggers, but there it is. It was quite an experience and sharing it with Mike was an unforgettable bond. Since college days, I only saw him once every few years but it’s hard to put it into perspective, somehow.
When he first was told he needed brain surgery, Mike told his doctor he needed that like a hole in his head. Mike made sure his friends heard that joke too. He liked to laugh at his own jokes. That gives me some joy now!

Heartless too?
“Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee who revealed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, earlier this year used her line-item veto to slash funding for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live.”
Don’t worry people. Bristol will be well cared for at the Vice President’s Mansion.

Joel Mark – Vickie (VS) one time signed off an e-mail to me by saying, “One foot in the grave but still dancing!”
When she got the news from her doctor that the cancer was spreading even more, & faster than it previously had, she said she had a sense of peace, that God had prepared her for what she heard, & that she was joking around with the doctor.
I hope that if I ever face something like that I can face it with grace & humor.

Outkast at #58: Who cares how deliberative it was, Lumpy, and why should you care? Especially since you won’t be voting for that side of the ticket anyway?
Because she might end up being president.
See, unlike you, we care about the country, not just the party. We care whose on your ticket because if ours loses, we have to live with your choices. We have every right to criticize poor choices on your side.
By your logic, you should shut up about Obama. You’re not going to vote for him anyway, so what do you care?
If McCain wins and then is unable to complete his term, Sarah Palin would be our president. Darn right we have a right to be concerned with how good the process was that led to her being picked.

Yes, Noonan is still my fav. journalist. Her comments are disappointing (I checked out the video), but not necessarily two-faced. I doubt her grumpiness about the VP pick will have much effect actually. She’s conservative “family”, that won’t change. She’s acting like the mother-in-law-to-be, miffed personally at her son’s choice, but puts on a good face in public. Her “off camera” feelings would be appropriatly kept off camera. They may change and then she will save face, or they may not, but it would still be appropriate to keep them under wraps.

“If the Republicans don’t want us to look closely at this candidate, there’s got to be something wrong.”
Oh. there’s absolutely nothing wrong with looking closely, but it’s like the old playground saying goes: “You look with your eyes, not your hands”. The nasty folks on the left have not just been looking closely, they’ve been trying to get a hand in anywhere they can, throwing punches, pulling hair, shoving, spitting, and cursing, and I find it absolutely disgusting.

Outkast, I’m still waiting for you to explain how Sarah Palin was not lying her pants off when she said she refused funding for the bridge to nowhere.
Report comment to moderator
Glumps,
Why on earth is Outkast responsible for proving that attacks aren’t true? If you have proof of your assertion that she’s lying, offer it. But asking someone else to prove that your assertion is false is a little absurd.
Report comment to moderator
Cheryl,
It has nothing to do with attacks.
Outkast and I were discussing Palin’s claim that she told Congress “NO” on the bridge to nowhere.
Outkast said “It wasn’t a lie, Lumpy. Give it up already.”
I asked him to support his contention, as it’s easy enough to show she is lying.
CBS News says:
“Congress killed off the earmark well before Gov. Palin formally abandoned it. And while the bridge is in fact a dead project, the state still kept the money all $233 million in federal funds, for other transportation needs.”
History on the Bridge to Nowhere:
In October 2005, Republican Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska became the object of strong media criticism when he opposed diverting the Gravina and Knik Arm Bridge funds to help aid recovery from Hurricane Katrina.[3] In his speech on the Senate floor, Stevens threatened to quit Congress if the funds were removed from his state.[4]
The project was canceled in 2007 by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin after Congress forced the funds to be used elsewhere:
“Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer. Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it’s clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island. Much of the public’s attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened.”[8]

Can I repeat that?
