Message to Misters McCain and Obama
As a throw-the-bums-out attitude is prevalent in the land during this election season, I am reminded of the zeal of the Massachusetts State Legislature in 1670, which, alarmed at the general lapse in morals, appointed a commission to investigate why God seemed to be judging New England, and to devise remedies. The Commission returned with eight recommendations, the first of which addresses civil leaders of Church and State, enjoining them to set the rest of us a good example. Let Misters McCain and Obama take note.
With your permission, I will also list the other seven recommendations:
2. “Let none be admitted to the Church who has not made a full profession of saving faith.”
3. “Let discipline in the Church be enforced.”
4. “Let the churches renew their covenants with God.”
5. “Let the sins of the times be engaged against.” (i.e., no timid, wimpy preaching)
6. “Let the churches promote holiness and a closer walk with God.” (In other words, don’t just talk a good game.)
7. “Support Harvard College.”
8. “Cry mightily unto God that He be pleased to rain down righteousness.”
Is it possible that someone was listening and that these measures set the groundwork for the Great Awakening of 1740? Might we consider employing them again?
Well, maybe we can toss out No. 7.

2. “Let us attract to the church based upon felt-need.”
3. “Let us change churches if it gets uncomfortable at ours.”
4. “Let us preach over and over again the three point gospel. Come to Jesus will solve everything.”
5. “Let us preach topically about balancing our check books and how to raise children. No more than thirty minutes.”
6. “Let the us get as many as we can to the big church service to hear our preacher and awesome worship band. Community and spirituality is optional.”
7. “Support fun kids ministries. Don’t expect them to learn much more than ‘Jesus loves you and died for your sins. Therefore, behave yourselves.’”
8. “Let the old folks pray Wednesday night if they’re still meeting.”
OK. I’ll turn my cynicism off for the rest of the day.

I’m not knocking it, but there’s a lot of time there between 1670 and 1740. Does a great awakening really take 70 years? I don’t think we have 70 years.
I think Harvard College should use some of its endowment.

Number 7? That’s why they started Yale.

NJLawyer,
70 years is a pretty fast awakening for folks educated at Harvard and touched by wimpy sermons. It was a miracle that folks in Mass even lived that long. Maybe this led to Teddy Kennedy and Komrad Koward Kerry rather than being so rudely snapped to reality. Instead of an awakening they got Mass Insanity, Socialism while making the Babe a Yankee and cursing themselves. I’m guessing that the folks of Mass were victimized in the end.
Plus the Chinese, who are long term thinkers, would consider 70 years the blink of an eye even though some of their fine, if inconsistent, gymnasts were aged in nanoseconds or less. One thing is for sure, Springfield, Mass will depress you to no end each and every moment you are there and people are found lying the gutter with their wrists slashed every morning. Sad really.

I’m sure the land today is knee deep in wimpy sermons.
Fortunately, this web site is over the head deep in rabid sermons. I’m sure God is noticing and approving.
