I visited a new doctor as my old doctor is retiring. At our first meeting, he did not start yelling STAT!; he did not start beating on my chest; he did not grab the paddles and start shocking my heart, even though I am close to heartless.
Random Granddaughter, who left her old pre-school at the age of four shortly before they kicked her out as an inveterate trouble-maker and juvenile delinquent, and after a week of abusing her day sitting grandparents, and after a week of summer day camp where she studied those mythical beasts known as dinosaurs, has started a new preschool. Although she refused to take a nap, and came home over-excited and exhausted, and on the second day after she got home, she said she wished she could go back, we expect a crisis any day now that requires the school to be taken over by a SWAT team.

They always behave better with someone else, Kbells, until the new wears off. My grandson is very strong-willed and quite a hand-full for everyone. At school, however, he has always been the teacher’s pet. So far, so good. It amazes his parents who always want to ask for a DNA test to make sure the teacher is talking about the same child. My granddaugher did not get kicked out of pre-school. She did get sent to “time-out” to sit with the “bad boys.” RG’s Mommy, herself a skilled teacher, felt the school’s frequent use of timeouts and punishment of boys, for well, being boys, indicated problems with the school and not with the boys. RG acting like a bad boy may be a good sign or a bad sign.
Her new “preschool” is quite small and run by a real mom (with a husband, unlike RG’s mommies) out of her home with a limited number of children to care for. She is also a licensed Montessori teacher (as is RG’s mom).
NT. Congratulations. I have never learned to play poker well. Seriously, I admire anyone who has a skill I lack (which includes almost everyone in the world).
Chas, however, I hope you will forgive me for the following.
When we moved to the island, I bought a chain saw and a trimmer. I haven’t lopped [one of my own] limbs off yet.
I was completely baffled and frustrated by the process of re-stringing the weed trimmer. After three years of struggling with it, and going to a dealer and demanding a demonstration appropriate for idiots, I have reached the point where I can successfully restring it about 80% of the time. For a mechanical idiot such as me, this puts me up the Einstein level. If drill had written this message it would have been really funny.

Night Train, I would be very careful of these online games if you have something invested in them. They cheat.
I don’t bet money, but in computer solitare, You get statistically improbable combinations often. You would love a poker hand that the solitare game gives. The probability of a seven card flush is so small, it should never happen. But it does. Often
Similar things happen in freecell. If you get a run of winning, you come up with an impossible hand. And they run in sequence untill you lose a few.
Also, as some complain about the blog. It becomes addictive. Think I’ll go and play a hand now.

I don’t really consider myself a liberal, but today I will wear a liberal armband. I’m not a Dane, but one of my daughter’s best friends is Finnish, so I hope that will be close enough.
Also, I am not an atheist, but I am a high agnostic, which in a dim light (which I am usually in) looks so much like an atheist that I don’t think you can tell the difference.
I don’t think American has anything to do with God or God has anything to do with America. Also, some people in North America and Central America and South America have the temerity to consider themselves Americans.
I think I may have set an Olympic record for the most offensive statements in one message at World Mag Blog. Also, I think I just used up my 8th message I allow myself today. I will go and play with my chain saw.

Rave: I made it through the first week of school unscathed,
Rant: but I need to improve my learning curve on Urdu, Tagalog, Albanian, Arabic, Turkish and Kurdish names. When attempting to repeat my students’ last names from memory, I was perfect until the last student (given my short term memory lapses that was impressive). Unfortunately, my last student, an Albanian with a Albanian first name and Arabic last name stumped me. I knew it was Al – something and thinking it started with Kh I said AL-Khadah which sounded wrong.
kbelis: I’ve had students whose parents swore up and down were the living embodiment of Satan yet were straight A well behaved children at school. On the other hand, I’ve had parents claim their children were angels yet I begged to differ. As a parent, I would prefer the former even though short term pain is obvious.
Random: my daughter spent far too much time in timeout at the coop preschool but thrived in Montessori kindergarten.

Chas,
Here’s a suggestion for you that worked for me. After years of being frustrated by trying to reload my weed whacker line, and finally coming to the conclusion that it is impossible to do, I found an alternative. I went to Home Depot and bought a new one. The new one has this lovely little removable head. For around $5 I can buy a replacement head that just snaps in and is ready to roll. I only go thru about 2-3 a year. I felt that keeping my sanity was worth $10-$15 a year, and am quite happy with the choice. Perhaps you should try this option as well.
And one more
God has a plan, and I know it will all work out as He plans. I just wish I knew what He had in mind for me, and what I could do to follow His lead.

Chas- I found a kit that has nylon blades instead of string. It was much easier to occasionally replace the blades. I hate the string, especially since I can never figure out how to get it out. I bent the weed eater from hitting it too hard on the ground. I firmly believe that if engineers actually used the things they designed, they would see how user unfriendly some things are!
WMB powers that be: I have a suggestion. Perhaps you could change the name of this thread to Raves and Rants. Then we would all feel like it is a positive thread first instead of second.
Report comment to moderator
I bought a battery-operated weedeater several years ago that simply uses a length of plastic string that is about 5 inches long. Each disposal length of plastic lasts for around 3-4 times trimming things around the yard, and then I easily and simply replace it. It’s called “Clip Sticks” or something like that.
Report comment to moderator
BTW, I agree with Peter’s suggestion. Raves & Rants puts the emphasis on the positives.
Report comment to moderator
Thanx for the suggestions everyone. I had one of the devices some of you suggested, but when I had my trimmer in the shop, it was returned with a new head with the string wound properly. But, when it ran out and I tried to replace it, you know what happened.
I think I could wind it if there was a way to hold the first part of the string in the spindle, but a clamp might prevent the string from advancing. I have some extended now, but it won’t advance properly. When necessary, I may buy another device as some of you suggested.
This may be more proper on the WV thread, but in a sense, it’s a rant.
There’s an article in the recent Religious Herald, the Va. State Baptist paper. It’s entitled “The Futile Search for Graham’s Successor”. The article presumes to be looking for a successor to Billy Graham. My first thought was, “This is a stupid article for a religious paper.” The Baptist editors should recall that God selected Elisha to follow Elijah. He selected Joshua to follow Moses. He will select whomever he wants to fill whatever job he needs done.
They redeem themselves, however with the last paragraph.
“Franklin Graham recalls years ago when his father was speaking before 10,000 evangelists and was asked who would take his place when he retired. He stretched out his arms to them and said, ‘You’”.

WASILLA, Alaska — The biggest project that Sarah Palin undertook as mayor of this small town was an indoor sports complex, where locals played hockey, soccer, and basketball, especially during the long, dark Alaskan winters.
The only catch was that the city began building roads and installing utilities for the project before it had unchallenged title to the land. The misstep led to years of litigation and at least $1.3 million in extra costs for a small municipality with a small budget. What was to be Ms. Palin’s legacy has turned into a financial mess that continues to plague Wasilla.

I remember when my granddaugher began to learn to skip at the age of three. She was very cute.
Although she is beginning to learn to read at the age of four, she is not allowed to use a computer, and certainly not to read blog messages. (Having seen Mommy–birth mother–and non-genetically-related Grandpa use computers, and hearing them talk about reading email as an excuse for ignoring her, she now pretends to be “reading my email,” revealing that despite our best efforts to keep her in darkness of the dark ages, she is becoming a modern age child. It is very good that she knows how to skip already, as this is a skill that will stand her in very good stead.

I was a teacher for 34 years. I looked at the one area I know something about in Obama’s plans, education. He is “for” all the latest things that Education schools around the country are “for”. One of the big problems is that while these things sound good, in practice they don’t work very well.
Here in CA, most of the things Obama wants to put into practice have been tried. I was a “reading” teacher for the last 7 years of my career. I taught reading to those children in 6th grade who hadn’t learned in the previous 5+ years. About half learned to do better. Some even tested out.
The education establishment is pushing that everyone needs to go to college. My wife says that is so they won’t be accused of being racially prejudiced. We certainly wouldn’t want those children in Special Education classes to think they can’t go to college, now would we?
This push for everyone to go to college just sets-up half or more of our students for failure. They shouldn’t all go to college.
It used to be that only about 1/4th of students were smart enough to go to college. The other 3/4ths of the school is being told they have to go to college or that they are failures. Schools have, for the most part, gotten rid of all non-college prep classes. All children are told over and over that they need to “go to college”. I am now ranting.
I only spoke about a little of the problems that I see in Obama’s education plans. I see more problems than I care to discuss.
Obama’s education goals are more of the same ‘ol same ‘ol.
I wonder about the other plans he has…

As someone who worked in public education for a number of years, I pretty much agree with Bob Buckles about the failings of public education.
However, (not addressed at Bob in particular but intending to offend conservative Christians in general), in the cliches, stereotypes, unwarranted generalizations and other symptoms of sloppy “thinking” so frequently evident at wmb, I think many people here need to be in a special education class as well.
I think many here were only “passed,” by what is sometimes called “social promotion.”

Cheap shots will not get you a copper medal even if they are intended to be humorous. Just like steroids, which will get you kicked out, name-calling and insults are taking an unfair advantage, because often the receiving party is not willing “loath” to return fire. Remember, the refs are watching.
By the way, there were/are lots of Olympic athletes who don’t cheat, so that’s a generalization right there, even if it wasn’t meant to be taken seriously.
Report comment to moderator
Update:
I believe it was Drill who said that insults should be allowed only if worded in Shakespearean language (i.e. from a play of his).
I agree, so if an attack is made sounding like “Thou art as the wrathful dove or most magnanimous mouse,” the refs will permit it. Hm, refs, I need to recruit some. Does anybody want to be one? All that is required is the ability to refrain from “flaming” and to point out when others do so they aren’t disqualified. And while we’re at it, I might as well make a “most interesting” category as well as “most civilized,” “most insightful,” etc. Any suggestions, anyone?

We both work in public education and teachers on both sides of the political spectrum have similar complaints, especially the over emphasis on the academic stream as opposed to applied or technical education. Both sides of the political spectrum tend towards the same error and its understandable, every parent (voter) wants to hear their children is smart and will go to university.
However, some children are academically able to go to university and income/wealth should be mitigated as a factor. Obama provides some programs towards this.
Early education will also increase the academic abilities of individuals who because of parents will not have the same start as others. Again Obama provides a plan towards this.
Technical and trade education is missing from his platform and political expediency is probably the reason. McCain makes the same error http://www.johnmccain.com/ (move the mouse over Issues and click education). Policy wonks who write these platforms are biased based on their personal educational experience.
Finally both canidates missed the obvious: Education is a state and local responsibility. The federal gov’t should establish basic standards so education achievements are transferable across the country but the implementation of the standards is not their responsibility.

Now I want you to go back and find then entire quote – not just the part you heard the propagandists on the left that control your life told you about. You can do it. Don’t rely on people who could care less about you making a fool out of you.
Now what was the entire quote? I tell you what. Something that is the whole truth is very hard for lefties. Just give us the next two or 3 sentences that Dave said after your cherry picked one. You know the one where he said that of course issues will be an important part of the race. You just said he was saying the opposite. But he wasn’t was he? OF course he wasn’t. Anyone with a even a small brain like yours knows better than that.

#31 Godlumps,
And what was Tom Delay convicted of? Any Christian, Conservative or Republican can find themselves indicted by a corrupt socialist DA like the one in Texas. I think that you will find most Americans prefer themselves to be considered innocent until proven guilty but lefties seem to think that this only applies to them for some reason. Probably because they would like to take these rights away from those that are not insane like they are.
I’m guessing that McCain could care less if Tom Delay has endorsed him but he certainly wouldn’t say that he was embarrassed by it where Obama loves having Islamofascists endorse him as he is forced to say that he doesn’t really want Ossama’s blessing since he isn’t a real Imam no doubt after he claimed he gave up Islam for Christianity after his 4 lost years at Columbia anyway when his friends adn roommates were all Pakistani Muslim extremists. Maybe you can answer this for Obama since he can’t do so. Why does Louis Farrakhan still claim Obama to be a Muslim? Louis says he that Obama is one and as the leader of the Nation of Islam I would think that he would know wouldn’t you?
We know Obama is a pathological liar so we can’t believe him on this and Louis is a man of God like the Reverand Wright who also said that Obama would lie about anything to get elected but the Reverend is for Obama too.
Not only is Obama confused about his religion so are many religious leaders too. At least as a god you can try toi be all things to all people.

I’ve ignored the request because, no matter what “proof” I put forward, Outkast would weasel his way out of it, claiming one technicality or another, and he would argue ad infinitum about it.
What I’m after is not an argument on technicalities, but the attitude he puts forward (which comes through in his words), that denigrates individuals on here (including me). It’s that self-righteous, judgmental, “holier than thou”, prideful attitude that CCR’s have become so infamous for. When those of us who aren’t CCR’s call them on it, they get indignant and start making personal attacks. The thing is – they destroy whatever witness for Christ they may have had. And from what I’ve observed, most of them could care less. They may win the argument, but they lose the war.
So, yes, I will continue to call on Outkast to repent and apologize for his personal attacks on me. I will never give up until he does.
