WORLD goes social
Wanting to keep all of you readers and skimmers informed and connected, we have set up a Twitter feed, where you can see regular updates on news as well as fresh stories on our site.
If you’ve never used Twitter before, it’s very simple feed that will spit out a couple sentences of what’s new every so often. You can set up an account here.
We’ve also created a WORLD page on Facebook: Become a fan! You can have even more discussions there and give us feedback on our work here at the magazine.

Our newspaper just set up ‘twittering’ for us to plug and update ongoing stories we’re covering. We’re all having a good time with it.
And I feel so smart just knowing what twittering even is.
Sorta.

I tawt I taw a twitter!

I need to get a “Facebook for Dummies” and a “Twittering for Dummies” book. I went to the link, but couldn’t make anything of it.
Report comment to moderator
I’m in a similar boat as Chas, though I have no desire to read such books.
I DO know what Facebook is, but I don’t have an account.
I have NO IDEA what Twitter is. I went to the site and looked it up on Wikipedia, but I still don’t get it.
I think I’m a little behind the times, especially for a 27 year-old.

Don’t feel bad about not understanding this stuff. It was all made by nerds. You’ll get the hang of it fast.
Go ahead and create an account on Twitter, clicking the “join” button on their main page (www.twitter.com). Pick a username and password, click the “I want the inside scoop” box and then click “I accept.” You’re in!
You’ll see once you’re inside Twitter that you can “follow” people and have “followers.” When you follow someone – WORLD magazine, for example – all that means is that you will get alerts when they post updates.
It’s like a news ticker: you read about people you’re following and write your own ticker for your followers. Once you see how it works, you’ll see it’s pretty simple.
Once you sign up, you can follow WORLD through the link I posted above, or you can do a search for us.

Emily,
I know this appeals to H.S. and some college students, however most people don’t have the time or interest to follow people around, checking on what their writing, etc.
Up-to-date news can be found on DRUDGE, it covers many news services and wires, not to mention those abroad.
Report comment to moderator
Yeah, but you can’t read on drudge about how I cleaned off my desk and put out an alert that dolphins were reported frolicking off cabrillo beach this morning.

Those newsy little tidbits held the rapt attention of all 7 of my ‘followers’ (who sit no more than 8 feet from me) this morning.
(kind of more seriously, one of our reporters twittered about a drunken man who burst into the city council chambers earlier this week as it was happening. I know, all this is perhaps more than we want to know, but this is the age of news-news-news all the time, no matter what.)
Report comment to moderator
Twitter and Facebook may not be for everyone, but I’m 30 years out of high school, and they appeal to me!
Thanks, Emily, for setting this up for those who would like to use it to follow what WORLD’s great group of writers are reporting on.

The reporters at our paper have had a lot of fun with it since we signed up only about a week ago.
Although one my (much) younger colleagues said twitter made HER feel old.

Hi Mickey
Glad you enjoy ‘Twitter’ you are the first person over 25 or so that I know who enjoys it. I’m sure there are those who are older, and interested in ‘Twitter’ however the average age group is 18-24 –
Is WMB and World Magazine changing their thrust towards audience? – marketing more to older H.S – college age students or those who are just entering their chosen professions often as apprentices or interns? Some of us have discussed the new WMB and this appears to be the case.
Donna, Twitter doesn’t make me feel old, mainly because I’m not, its very much a kid thing, not something most professionals would bother with.

Donna–
Are you in San Pedro? My hometown?
I did my internship on the now defunct San Pedro News Pilot.
Report comment to moderator
We have to set the timer at work so my boss remembers to “twitter.”
I agree, I have too many other things to do–besides I can see what she’s doing at her desk–reading e-mail and twittering!
Report comment to moderator
Oh my gosh, Yes! I worked at the “fishwrapper.” We may have crossed paths…?? Funny.
What years were you there?
Report comment to moderator
I lived in San Pedro 1956-1977. I worked for the paper the summer of 1977 while I finished up at UCLA, and was by far the youngest member of the staff. Two twenty-something guys, however, liked to hang out with me for some reason . . . I think they were the sportswriter and the photog.
Our church–Trinity Lutheran–is still a wonderful place.

If runners run, speakers speak, and bloggers blog, must it also remain true that only twits can twitter?
Also, if I access twitter, am I the twittor or the twittee?

VICTORIA:
We’re looking to deliver WORLD content to readers of all ages through a variety of channels: everything from our print magazine and its corresponding website to RSS feeds and social networks to eventually mobile phones and other emerging technology. The ways in which Americans read and receive news is ever-changing, and WORLD intends to stay abreast of the changing landscape as best we can.
Just because we offer WORLD content through channels such as Facebook and Twitter doesn’t mean we are forsaking our more traditional vehicles, such as our flagship print publication. We’re committed to delivering the best news magazine out there, with content that resonates with young and old.

Michelle: We didn’t miss each other by much! I was hired at the pilot in ‘81 (I was 28 at the time, they still had the blue selectric typewriters which were the latest thing then). I was there when the lights went out in 1998, sadly (couldn’t believe how sad it was to see a newspaper die). They transferred me to the daily breeze after that &. i still cover pedro. (plus do a blog on pets and now, of course, “twitter.”)
I’ve done stories on trinity lutheran, one of our former copy editors (who may have been there when you were) goes there now.
Everybody: As for twitter, it’s fun, and I think the profile of average users is older than we would think — like 30s to mid 40s. At least that’s what our editor tells us.

I may have to re-activate my Facebook account. It really is a fun site. I recomend starting your own country, there is an application for that. It’s a lot of fun but I can’t stand how issues are worded.

Mickey: I hear ya. So many changes in how to deliver media these days, it keeps us all scrambling.

Thanks for the info Mickey –
As you know most cell phones have BREAKING NEWS delivered if you wish – and TV, which we’ve had since it came out, including FOX and 8 or 9 other major networks. News channels (TV) are terrific, they give you live coverage, which beats other news services –
Thanks again

Thanks, DONNA J.
And VICTORIA, you’re right; those other well-funded, heavily staffed news sources do a great job, but none of them share our mission, which is “to report, interpret, and illustrate the news in a timely, accurate, enjoyable, and arresting fashion from a perspective committed to the Bible as the inerrant Word of God.”
Report comment to moderator
Mickey,
Most news sources do not share your mission statement, however, they do report the news ‘as it happens’ not from anyones perspective – Fox for example, does an excellent job, they have more resources than most other networks, and that would also include this site – Taking into consideration they are Television, with hundreds of journalists, etc around the world, ready to report instantly.
I have to add; when I watch the news or pick up the latest ‘Breaking News’ I don’t need to have it interpreted from anyones ‘viewpoint’ as you mentioned — “to report, interpret” — that would require skewing the content, rather than allowing it to come in its raw state.
I don’t believe that WMB always interprets every news-piece from a perspective according to the Word of God.

You guys are going to make us invent a new twitter?

I just got a Facebook account about a month ago. I love it, and I’m 33! I have reconnected with all kinds of “old” friends – and now I’m a WORLD fan! Fun!

I think some us have forgotten the Golden Rule and/or the old saying, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
I don’t twitter, but everyone I know who does is well over thirty, just for the record.
People have complained that this site didn’t reflect enough breaking news, but when they attempt to head in that direction, they get more complaints.
Even if twittering were limited only to 18-24, what’s wrong with World broadening their demographics to reach them? I think the print mag has one demographic, the online version another, the group here yet another, with some guaranteed overlap (since TJ and I comment here and currently take the print mag, for example).
Face it, Mickey and Emily, some people just can’t be satisfied.
Report comment to moderator
If everyone agreed on everything, and everyone followed some sort of “Golden Rule” (which doesn’t exist) then there would be no discussion at all. I don’t know anyone on this blog who follows “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all” —- If one believes this line, then they should follow it.
People see things from different perspectives, that’s why blogs exist in the first place. If one can’t or shouldn’t offer an opinion, what does that say?
Report comment to moderator
Victoria,
I agree that there’s no need to agree on everything, and this blog would be much less interesting if we all agreed – I doubt I would bother coming here. But I have to comment on this statement:
“I don’t know anyone on this blog who follows “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all””
How would you know whether someone follows this? It’s obvious when someone doesn’t. But there’s no way to know all that things that aren’t said because someone decided it wasn’t nice.
Report comment to moderator
The Golden Rule doesn’t exist? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you generally bears that name.

Cameron,
A blog is a place where people discuss lots of things, and they do disagree, just look at your own posts for the past year.
The above passage of Scripture does not mean that people don’t ask questions or disagree.

YOU WRITE:… “But there’s no way to know all that things that aren’t said because someone decided it wasn’t nice.”
That goes without saying – no one has a crystal ball.
Report comment to moderator
I never said anything about not disagreeing.
On topic, for anyone who twitters: I already use a blog compiler/RSS feed (Bloglines) to save time. Would twittering create yet another site for me to check (since I “follow” no one yet) or would it appear in my email or what?
Sorry for the stupid question.
Report comment to moderator
I’m new to twitter, so I’m not sure how that works, or if I’m even addressing your question with what I’m about to say. But I bookmarked the page (after I registered & had “following” people listed) — and every time I click on, it just pops up with “my” comments along with others on my list.
There’s a twitter faq page at:
http://help.twitter.com.index.php?pg=kb.page&id=26 .
Hope that link works.
