Sounds about right. But I would apply it to almost all literature written in the last 50 years, or since the idea of transcendence was lost.

I once read in TIME a letter from a German. He was castigating the USA for wasting “all that oil” during the Viet Nam war.
I daresay our Kraut friends have wasted a few more barrels of petrol than have we in war time.

If Mr. Engdahl is specific in pointing to the direction of American literary culture due to the Closing of the American Mind, I’d have to acknowledge him as a good critic, but it’s merely out of an European snobbery, then no kudos to him.

European culture is mostly dead
America doesn’t have a culture. We have movies and video games and Facebook instead–but it’s not culture.

Franco Mortetti (sp?), Eliot critic, summarily dismisses all of postmodern literature and notes that in the modernist period–the last period of real literature–literature “mattered.” Today it doesn’t have cultural significance.
