Something Light: Motivational quotes
I’m always amazed and blessed when someone’s wisdom from hundreds or even thousands of years ago touches me deeply, often coming at just the right moment in my life. For example, when I ran across today’s Whirled Views quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson, I immediately memorized it, then fired it off in an email to a group of friends and family.
What are some quotes and sayings that have helped motivate you or helped you get through tough times?

I just ask, How would Thomas Kinkaid paint this situation?

“Baby steps”

RR – Since Kinkaid is known as “the painter of light” (or something like that), I would assume that your answer is to shine light (or should I say, Light) into the situation.
Anlir – Yes! I love that movie, & the idea of just taking Baby Steps comes to me quite often if I am overwhelmed by something.

Not really a quote per se, but when I was considering graduate school, someone said “Look ahead five years. Either you will still be doing what you are doing, but not enjoying it, and not making much more money; or you will have the graduate degree and doing something you enjoy while having a greater earning power.” Needless to say, I went to grad school.

Lynn, do they have to be attributable to qualify? Medicine is brimming with aphorisms, though they only count as quotes because all of us have heard them from someone ahead of us in the pipeline:
“A chance to cut is a chance to cure.”
“Never let the skin stand between you and the diagnosis.”
“When you operate for pain, all you get is pain.”
“Eat now, sleep now, don’t pull any drains after 4 o’clock, and don’t $&#^ with the pancreas.”
This one is known in Alabama as “St. John’s Law,” named for some resident who used to say it long ago: “There is no one so [ugly, smelly, drug-addicted, obese...pick a negative adjective] that someone won’t be willing to get her pregnant.”
And, my old partner, explaining that similar symptoms may have different causes, even in the same patient, used to say, “Well, it’s possible to have both lice and fleas.”

I cannot praise a fugitive and cloistered virtue, unexercised and unbreathed, that never sallies out and sees its adversary, but slinks out of the race in which that immortal garland is to be run for, not without dust and heat.
~ John Milton, Areopagitica

Since this it “Something Light” I am going to go opposite of the stated topic and give some de-motivational humor. Everyone has seen those big posters with a big picture, a character trait and a pithy statement like this one. Recently someone showed me a set of spoofs of these at despair.com. Here is my current favorite. I think that all of the posters on this site are things I would not be embarrassed to show my children, but I have not studied with a fine tooth comb. Your mileage may vary.

Peter V – My husband’s office has one or two of those. Of course these are the same guys who wear Hawaiian shirts on Fridays for “Aloha Friday” every week… Buncha whack jobs, but fun to be around.

Long ago, I cut our a quote and taped it to my desk lamp. It’s yellow now. It says;
What most people call failure may be completely mislabled. Someone has said, “Failure is never fatal, and success is never final. It’s persistence that counts.”
I have since been told how WD-40 got it’s name.

Peter V #10- I read a few others, and found one we should heed in this election year concerning change.
(For those with slow computers, it shows a tornado and says: Change. When the winds of change blow hard enough, the most trivial things can turn into deadly projectiles.)
