The rising star: Joe
Joe the plumber, now etched in history via this debate, has the heavy burden of representing all of middle class America.
In almost every response, the candidates addressed Joe, telling him how the government will be involved in his life starting in January.
Meanwhile, some of the people I know watching are playing “debate bingo,” and were disappointed that some words didn’t come up, like “surge,” “maverick,” “bailout,” and “hope.” Surprising! Maybe that shows that the candidates weren’t resorting to their stump speeches.
Did McCain deliver the “knockout punch” that everyone said he needed?

Scored some good points? Yes. Knock out punch? No.

I think McCain won, but not by knockout.

I concur with AJ. McCain didn’t kick Obama’s “you-know-what” tonight, as he promised to do, but he definitely held his own against The One.
Interestingly enough, when contacted by the media tonight after the debate, “Joe the Plumber” maintained that Obama’s economic policies will hurt his small-business-to-be.
And that’s where the future of the American economy lies — in upstart small businesses, which feature regular Americans doing their best to build a future for their families.

Debate bingo…meaning a debate drinking game? Nice euphemism!

“Joe the Plumber” represents only a tiny fraction of the middle class — those about to make the leap to the upper class. I don’t know if you saw his original discussion with Obama on the streets of Ohio, but the entire issue was that he, as someone about to buy a business bumping his income above $250,000 a year, didn’t want to pay more taxes. (Specifically, that he thought such taxes a violation of the American Dream.)

So, Joe works his tail off and gets $250K a year. Left to his own devices, he can a)save it, helping the bank and the credit markets, b) spend it, helping businesses and their employees, c) invest it, helping to whole economy, d) hire people, helping families.
Or, he can “give it to me” (Obama’s own words). Joe sees no benefit to this, so he’s less likely to work as hard. McCain asked the right question: “Why raise taxes on anyone?” To which BHO replied, “He can afford it.” Americans complain about government eavesdropping on telephones. Do we really want a government that’s so powerful that it can decide what we can afford?

Joe says he doesn’t make anywhere near $250K and doesn’t own his own business. He wants to.
Joe hates Social Security. So who’s going to take care of his boy if something happens to Joe?
Joe got angry with a reporter who asked him why he registered with the Natural Law Party and what he knows about it.
Joe admits he has “personal issues”, but that doesn’t make him average. Not even within a narrow demographic is Joe average.

Complaining about taxes is a kind of empty boasting you have to do if you make your living roaring around town in a big pickup truck in search of a $100 hustle. That’s how you have to talk in order to do the kind of work you have to do. It’s a white male thing.

Scroop.
As a white male, I take great offense at that statement. I have plenty of friends who make their living “riding around in a big pickup truck” because they have to carry tools and work for a living – unlike some soft handed girly men I can think of.

Make it Man, so am I, and so do I — have friends with big pickup trucks that actually carry tools and equipment. The ones I know, however, usually don’t blame the federal government for standing in their way to becoming T. Boone Pickens.

Is this what you stoop to? You make a racist remark and YOU THINK you get a pass? It’s a white male thing.”
You might feel like a ‘big boy’ when you make those comments such as 8 It’s a white male thing.” but I can assure you that your assessment of ones worth are not wrapped up in the vehicle they drive or the professions they have chosen.

As for complaining about taxes, I think that many of us complain for good reason. Especially those who are trying to run small businesses- they are so over taxed, and over regulated that it makes keeping up with all that hard to even run, much less get rich running, a business.
It has NOTHING to do with being a white male- or doing the $100 hustle.

Emily: What planet do you live on where $250,000+ income is “middle class?”

The problem with having 15 minutes of fame is people actually look into your life. Joe has a few skeletons;

Seems Joe was pretty misleading about some key issues
Typical McSame supporter.

Joe is a deceitful jerk with delusions of grandeur – he is not *ever* going to buy a business of any kind.
