I think I understand now... Theo, it sounds like you are referring to quotations from the Gospel of John that are attributed to Jesus. But the lateness of that gospel's composition (90 AD or later) + its discontinuity w/earlier sources has led modern scholars to reject attributions of phrases like "I am the vine" and "No one comes to the Father but by me" to the historical Jesus. Theo, it sounds like you are referring to quotations from the Gospel of John that are attributed to Jesus. But the lateness of that gospel’s composition (90 AD or later) + its discontinuity w/earlier sources has led modern scholars to reject attributions of phrases like “I am the vine” and “No one comes to the Father but by me” to the historical Jesus. It is almost certainly the case that a historical Jesus never said those things.
