Baseball gets a little politics
I thought I would write a post about the stellar pitching show on the part of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays last night, where they toppled the Boston Red Sox to head to the World Series. I thought it might be a nice break from all this campaign talk.
Then I realized that nothing has escaped politics.
Oh, and Barack Obama has said he’s backing the Rays in the Series. And the Phillies.
Let’s pretend for a minute that we’re in a world where good baseball is all that matters. I’m not a Rays fan, but David Price pitched a great close last night. He started the year in single A ball, and has only appeared in five regular season games with the Rays - and he’s only 23. That manager Joe Maddon would put in a green pitcher in to close a game seven, with the bases loaded and the Rays only up by two runs, is remarkable.
Their starting pitcher Matt Garza was masterful, too, and helped the team take its first trip to the Series. Well-played baseball is enough to make anyone forget about campaigns and recessions.

I just read today the baseball’s 4 newest teams Florida, Tampa Bay, Colorado and Arizona all will have played in the World Series in the last 12-14 years.
The Chicago Cubs haven’t played in a World Series since 1945 (when all the good athletes were in the military).
They haven’t won the World Series since 1908.
But fans still flock to Wrigley Field.

All 4 of those teams have built their clubs from the ground up for the most part, especially pitching.
Of course, the smaller payrolls mean that they dont get to keep some of those young players around unless they take a chance and lock them up early.
Should be a pretty good series too.. Phils vs Rays.

Fox executives are probably crying in their coffee this morning. A Phils-Rays World Series will be a ratings disaster. Their dream scenario would have been the Dodgers vs. the Red Sox. Manny returns to Fenway for the first time since being traded. Nomar is an ex-Red Sox as well. Once the face of the Boston franchise.
Dodgers and Sox are two of the biggest franchises in the game, in terms of fans and payroll. Both teams have a storied baseball history.
Phils and Rays are almost exactly the opposite.
Two lesser franchises, one with almost no home fanbase (Rays). One has a history of losing in the postseason. One just made it.
What’s the tease for the Phils? Reruns of watching Joe Carter hit the homerun off Mitch Williams?
The tease for the Rays? The fact that they can’t sell out their own stadium? The fact that beside losing, they have no history?
I sure hope the baseball is good, because the storylines will stink. This could be the most uneventful and tedious World Series since the Cardinals win in 2006.

The Rays dropped “Devil” from their name before the season started. An ESPN guy who I like (Rob Neyer) said this was a sop to Fundamentalist Christians. I couldn’t find confirmation of this. Anyone know?
Lester, agreed with the storyline and ratings things, although I’m hopeful the baseball itself will be good. You thought the ‘06 World Series was worse than ’07’s?

To Yeah
Is the first I have heard of that. It just sounds like a gratuitous attack on conservative Christians.
Christians don’t complain about the Angels in baseball or the Saints in football.
How about the Notre Dame Fighting Irish? Would anyone in their right mind dare to call a team the Fighting Jews of Fighting Arabs?

We here at Red Sox Nation are devastated that the Sox couldn’t pull out another miracle. But good for Tampa Bay to go from worst to best in one year. Congratulations!

Isn’t there something in the Constitution about a strict separation of sports and state?
Let’s hope that the acutal series will stay focused on good baseball and that that athletes will keep their political comments to themselves!

Yeah - No it wasn’t fundamentalist Christians who complained about the name. However, Magnus Peter H. Gilmore of the Church of Satan accuses the team of kowtowing to “Bible Thumpers”.
As a side note, the Greek word devil (diabolos) means ‘false accuser’ or ’slanderer’. So apparently the guy is just doing his job.

Thanks for the link, XION. Funny. Although it wouldn’t surprise me if some Fundies here or there complained about the name, I couldn’t imagine only Tampa giving in, and not those other Devil teams (as your link points out). If he assumed too much, I’m disappointed, though not surprised, that Neyer blames “Fundamentalist Christians.” It would be like someone saying Christians oppose something or other because they just have to intrude on peoples’ sex lives. Shallow. Moronic.

Fighting Jews
Very disciplined, and well funded team. Play well at home, but weary of road trips. Finally a winning record after years of losing. Successful trades have given them a diverse lineup of offense weapons.
Fighting Arabs
All offense, very little defense. Tend to overly rely on the sacrifice. Unstable management - not known for hiring “players coaches”. Deep farm system gives them a near-endless supply of new players.

Emily Belz- there is an obvious political tie in to this series, and your post, but I cannot think of it now. Perhaps an inexperienced, young player making it big (tie-in to Obama)? Or the storied, experienced team losing (tie in to McCain)?

Speaking of “evil” nicknames, what about the Duke “Blue Devils” and the Wake Forest “Demon Deacons” (which were originally known as the “Fighting Baptists”)?
I doubt I will be watching this World Series. The Cubs are out, the White Sox are out, the Red Sox are out, the Dodgers are out…all the teams I was rooting for.

Travis and Nick: LOL!
Let me try …
Fighting Jews
They don’t play too well, but the food and entertainment is fantastic! The seats are catered and they always turn a profit.
Fighting Arabs
You don’t see them much of the time, but then BANG! Game over.

To Anlir
The name I cannot believe they can away with is the Washington “Redskins” (complete with red jerseys). And in the epicenter of political correctness, Washington D.C.
To Xion and Travis
I am afraid to ask you what your team mascot would be. Notre Dame has the white male dressed as a green leprechaun. Funny the people who are so offended by nicknames like the Braves, Chiefs, Indians etc. are bothered by that. Selective indignation.

Fighting Baptists
These are great players, but the constant delay-of-game violations arguing over the appropriateness of fan clothing, ballpark music and the lack of a 7th inning salvation message have taken their toll. Also, the food in the stands is all pot-luck.

Xion: Besides it’s hard to compete for players without a grand stadium.

Lester & Anlir:
Doesn’t matter to me who’s in it.
I’m such a baseball nut that I look forward to “The Series” like a kid looking forward to Halloween or Christmas. I call the cooler early-fall weather “World Series weather.”
“It’s the most wonderful time, of the year!”
And, I will honor the winner by putting their license plate frame on my car. (I used to travel to the champion’s home opener every April, to see them raise the pennant and hand out the rings . . . but then I had to start paying back my law school loans, and then I had kids . . . )

LOL-plus for Travis and Xion!

I just heard on the news that Tampa Bay is the lowest paid team in baseball. That’s fantastic! They are more likely to play for the love of the game. I am definitely pulling for them now.
Have any of you read the book Moneyball? It’s a great book about another “lowest paid team in baseball”, the Oakland A’s, going to the World Series. Billy Beane, having the lowest budget in the league, picked his players by computer rather than relying on scouts. Very interesting!

OH THE HUMANITY!! Just one day removed from Dan Wheeler striking my heart out from my chest, and you have to bring this to World on the Web!!!! Is there no justice in the world? As a longtime citizen of Red Sox Nation since age 6, I was being greedy, wanting a 3rd World Series title in 5 years. However….in all honesty and humility, I must do the right thing and applaud the Tampa Bay Rays on their well played championship. I now humbly raise in tribute my can of root beer to my fellow Rhode Islanders Dan Wheeler, and my homeboy (literally) Rocco Baldelli and the rest of Joe Maddon’s “worst to First”. Well done, American League Champs…..now go out there and beat those Phillies!!!!!
Memo to Thorn (#2): Recall the 2002 Los Angeles California Angels of Anaheim?? They won the WS with also a small payroll.
To Nick (#5): Fighting Irish?? Hey, I resemble that remark!
Bethany (#7) R O F L
Yeah (#4) An ESPN guy who I like (Rob Neyer) said this was a sop to Fundamentalist Christians. UUhh, what is a sop?
Travis (#10) Very well said!
Anlir (#12) You were rooting for the Red Sox? Well, methinks I found a bit more respect for you after all.

Fighting Baptists? I saw the winky face, Anlir; Fighting Baptist is a joke, right? If not, that is TOO FUNNY!
It’s interesting that the Washington Bullets changed their name, but not the “Redskins.” Of course, the Bullets changed their name to that of pagan sorcerers: the Wizards. I suppose that offends the anti-Harry Potters of the world. But, you’re going to offend someone, almost guaranteed.
The last year I taught high school, we got a new principal. He would do announcements at the end of the day, and then he would end them by telling the students, “Be proud, positive, and productive, like a good Tiger should.” The line was cheesy enough, and the fact that he left off the word “be” was a bit irritating. But then it eventually occurred to us that this was not the first school where he had used then line. His previous school had Blue Devils as the mascot. Someone checked and sure enough, he used to tell those students, “Be proud, positive, and productive, like a Blue Devil [or good Devil?] should.” Now that is just stupefying.
But this was also the same principal who thought that “Blaine” Pascal was a woman. He later became a school superintendent, of course.

Theo, I consider myself a Red Sox fan, even have a BoSox cap (purchased at Fenway Park, no less), but still felt compelled to root for the Rays. Both teams deserve our congrats, since it took a collective effort to block the Yankees from the playoffs!

Xion: I haven’t read Moneyball, but am very familiar with the A’s situation and sabermetrics in general. Have you ever visited firejoemorgan.com (language warning)? It’s hilarious. Joe Morgan was a great baseball player…and knows nothing about the game. (Morgan’s not the only target of that site, by the way).
Theophilus: A sop is an obligatory but undeserved concession; in this case, I think Neyer meant it was a cowardly one.

Hey TJ……I once saw a hilarious T-shirt with a messege: I root for 2 teams: The Red Sox and anybody who beats the Yankees.

Theo, I’d buy that shirt!

Definately Theo, so can you count the Braves 15 years at the top of the NL East in large part to the strength and continual production of their farm system.
The Red Sox also have alot of young talent, they are just stuck with Manny’s bill
They also have teh capitol to go out and get that missing piece or two though, where as a Tampa has done so well without having too. The Young for Garza/Bartlett trade was a great move, especially since it didnt add to the payroll
Yeah, Joe Morgan annoys me. So does Steve Phillips, he just likes to hear himself talk. I’m quite a John Kruk fan, not only because he has a good sense of the game, but at least once a week he looks at Steve Phillips like he’s an idiot

Here’s hoping for a thrilling series that goes at least 6, hopefully seven. Too many short series as of late.
True, Phillies-Ray is not the glam marquee match-up that many wanted. But it’s the baseball that counts - and the World Series can usually deliver some magic, regardless of who is involved. Recall that the Twins-Braves match-up in ‘91 looked kinda flat on paper. But my-oh-my, that was sizzling stuff!
