Happy Thursday!
In keeping with my creepy theme of yesterday, here’s another quote from a classic horror flick:
“If you have a gun, shoot ’em in the head. That’s a sure way to kill ’em. If you don’t, get yourself a club or a torch. Beat ’em or burn ’em. They go up pretty easy.”

Another scary thing. I see on Drudge that Grace Jones can’t stand Sarah Palin. Now this all comes out too late. Too bad I’ve already voted.
No, I read the article, but I still don’t know who Grace Jones is. She thinks she may be posessed by her grandfather who fought in WW I.

An encouraging email I received from my Momma today (who does not support Obama):
Charles Stanley gave a lovely message on praying for our nation 3 weeks ago. At the conclusion he got on his knees beseeching the Lord for our country. Our beloved America is being attacked from within and without.
Do you remember several years ago when all was densely dark? A voice of hope came ringing out of our nation’s capital. It was Ronald Reagan calling us back to our fundamental greatness. We took heart and we prayed! Then we went to the polls and voted for God’s man. Praying does move the hand of God. Hasn’t He showed it to be true?
I’m going to laugh in the face of adversity and joyfully cast my vote next Tuesday for John McCain. (Won’t it be great to see the faces of those who were so certain that Obama would win?)I don’t approve of all McCain stands for. But he loves the lives of unborn children. That alone is enough for me. I’m not afraid of the big bad wolf. “The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous run into it and are safe!”
All that we see around us with human eyes is discouraging. All that we see with our spiritual eyes–God at the helm of this world–brings peace and dispels panic. God save America!
And…God loves a cheerful voter!
I’m Judy Stiles and I approve this message.

Surprise announcement that Random Granddaughter will visit us on Saturday. The apples on our Spitzenburg tree (a variety favored by Thomas Jeffeson)are ripe. One is on a branch low enough for RG to pick by herself.
The mommies will take her over to visit the Friendly Neighbors who used to work for the Boy Scouts. She will help collect some eggs from the chickens (which the mommies will purchase because they are so fresh and organic) and she will check out the ducks eating slugs.
Next year we will probably raise our own chickens and ducks. Chickens for eggs and meat, which means we will have to develop our own chicken killing, plucking, and cleaning skills.
At four years old, RG already knows that vegetables come out of the ground. When she is five will she be ready to learn that meat comes from killing a bird or mammal?

But KBells, that’s saying dogs aren’t people, isn’t it? Is that allowed anymore?
My own dog, the sweet and beautiful Bonnie Miss Tennessee, turns four years old today. Later today she’ll get her birthday “cake.” Usually she gets a raw hamburger (the rest of the year she never gets more than a nibble when I’m cooking beef), topped with green bean candles and cheese flames, three of her favorite foods. Not sure if I have any green beans or cheese at the moment, but the hamburger is thawing in the fridge, and I think that’s the most important part.
When Misten doesn’t think she’s getting enough attention, sometimes I have to remind her she doesn’t have to share me with any other dogs. She had to share her mama with nine other puppies, so she should be more than happy to live in a calm household now.

Of course, I haven’t seen or heard anyone say that they are “certain” Obama is going to win, particularly not on here. But I do have some quotes I’m saving from McCain supporters on here who are certain that he is going to win. With any luck, I’ll get to post them on Nov. 5th so we can all have a good laugh.
Barack Obama is the new Ronald Reagan, in that he offers a positive vision and hope for this country. And like Reagan, Obama has a way of communicating that captures people’s attention.
And I would dare say that a fair number of people are going to the polls next Tuesday and voting for “God’s man”, Barack Obama.
There is no doubt that there are Christians on both sides who are praying for victory next Tuesday. We shall find out if God favors the Democrats or the Republicans. Heh.

they can be mostly litter box trained but need to be kept in a cage most of the time or they will get into everything.
I usualy let mine out to play for about an hour a night. when they get tired they crawl back into their cage and go to sleep.
One of the funniest things you will ever see is the “weasel war dance” where the ferret is so excited and happy that it litterally pops in the air with all four feet at time. they also like to play tag.

Something Light, a personal story. You may want to skip this.
I’m reading a book called Kermit Edney Remembers, Where Fitz Left Off”. Bits of history about Hendersonville.
He mentioned the Dixie Home Store on Main St. which caused me to re-remember something I told my Sunday School class several years ago.
When I was a 7-8 year old kid in Winnsboro, SC, we lived in a “mill village” in (I think) Winnsboro Mills. I remember walking from home to the Dixie Home Store (seemed a long way to me, but really only about a quarter mile) and saying to the man behind the counter. “Momma wants a loaf of bread, a quart of milk and a dozen eggs. And she said I could have a penny’s worth of candy. And put it on the tab.”.
So, he packaged the stuff and let me pick some candy. I looked at all of it, but probably picked “Mary Janes” because you got several pieces and didn’t have to eat it all at once.
Then I said to them (my class): “What an amazing thing to happen if you think about it. Think of the trust that goes into a transaction like that.”
Can you imagine a kid going into a store and telling a man, “Momma” wants, and “put it on the tab” and he does it, and is confident that “daddy” will come in on Friday and pay whatever this man has on his page without checking receipts (none of which were given)? Also, just the tab, no interest was added.
Those were depression years, they were hard times in many ways, but in retrospect, life was simple and not so bad either.
I may have to add this to my autobiography.

musing 24,
I heard they were a lot of fun but need a “safe” room to run free for a while. The nipping can be trained out of them as I understand, probably in young ones. Are they appropriate for an eleven year old who loves animals and wants a cuddle toy, but is very forgetful? (it won’t starve or die of thirst with me around) but don’t know if they need regular significant attention. The idea is to teach her responsibility but not at the cost of the animal’s comfort.

Chas I think your story is heartwarming. My dad was born in 1938 and as he was growing up my grandfather owned grocery stores. From this I learned a couple of humorous racial stereotypes…it is impossible to sell black people bad meat. My grandfather on carried the best or he couldn’t sell it. My father spent a lifetime instilling in me that it was better to buy beef and pork when it had been reduced for quick sale. The best tasting beef has more marbling in it…always, always, buy fresh chicken and if in doubt throw it out. I have half of my grandfathers butcher block in my kitchen as a table and my own personal 1930’s era rebuilt Hobart meat slicer.

Ferrets are illegal in Calif, but I remember a guy in my old Long Beach neighborhood who would walk around with his wrapped around his shoulders. I think there’s a big movement to legalize them as pets.
My parents were kids in the Depression and as hard as that time must have been, I think that period (followed by WWII) did so much to mold their generation in way that built strong character, frugality and a willingness to sacrifice.
Sadly, the generations since, starting with mine, the baby boomers, have perhaps had things just a little bit too easy. As in our personal lives, God so often uses those times of want and trial to benefit us and bring us closer to Him.

#32 Karen, I bought some recently at WalGreens.
My daughter has to walk past some aggressive dogs to get to the one class she takes at the Christian school down the road. The owners usually keep them fenced in, but not always. (Irresponsible pet owners make me so upset!)
My husband had the idea for her to carry pepper spray, and it was a good thing. She came home crying one day, saying that she had to spray the littler dog. She tried to order it back, then tried to scare it, but it kept coming, and snarling (she was on the road, not in its yard). She tried to spray just a little to warn it away, but it got in the dog’s eyes. She said it was pitiful, and she felt so bad. She was really, really upset that it might have permanent damage. She has such a tender heart!
The good news is that those dogs haven’t bothered her since.
Neighbors have called animal control several times, but the dogs remain…I do not understand people who would keep animals who are a danger to children!

There is a third possiblity: have you looked at the you tube “Obamatopia” (think I got the name right)?

ABC Reports: McCain-Palin Campaign Snubs Penn State Prez
Unwelcome at Palin Campus Event Because He’s a “Big Democrat”
In my opinion, this is utter political insanity. The only real path McCain has runs through PA, where they are trailing by about 12% in the polls.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to bring in the “Big Democrat” to lend the campaign more of a bi-partisan look at this juncture? Maybe even get a picture of Palin shaking his hand? He’s well known and respected in PA.
And the school would have let them use the facilities FREE if they opened their rally to everyone like the Obama rally with Bill Clinton. Instead, McCain-Palin paid $8000 to have a closed door Republicans Only rally where the President of the University was excluded based on his party affiliation. I don’t get it.
The politics of division are killing them, and they keep doing it!? Someone fill me in. How is this good strategy — and good for the country?

indeed if McCain wins PA and Ohio and Florida and Virginia, Obama will indeed be in a tight spot.
If Obama wins PA and ( Ohio or Virginia or Florida ), McCain is in a tight spot.
The RealClearPolitics averages are:
Florida 48.5 45.0 Obama +3.5
North Carolina 49.0 46.0 Obama +3.0
Virginia 51.0 44.5 Obama +6.5
Ohio 49.2 43.4 Obama +5.8
Missouri 48.0 47.8 Obama +0.2
Colorado 50.8 44.3 Obama +6.5
Nevada 50.3 43.3 Obama +7
and carried separately
PA 52 48
The state poll numbers have been trending towards Obama’s favor.
What is intersting is that PA, Nevada, Colorado, and Virginia are above 50% for Obama. Ohio is just under 50%. Even if all the undecideds go for McCain, Obama still would hold a slim edge.
It will be interesting to see if these numbers match the election results.

Musing,
Historically dems have a big lead going into election day and lose. They work their in house polls to look like they are are ahead when they are not and then at like the election was stolen from them somehow. Their polls like yours in fact, had Bush beat by a min of 5% each time and he won somehow. This won’t be any different. It is a very tight race and too close for my old polling company to call at this juncture according to my wife’s nephew who runs it mow and our polls are never wrong or manipulated. The hard thing to figure this time is how many white democrats are telling their buddies they will vote for Obama but won’t because he is black. One thing for sure is that if Obama loses it will be because white democrats couldn’t bring themselves vote for him and they are the only race discriminators in the country black or white.
With the gay marriage on the ballot in AZ, McCain has it sewed up but the dems think it is slightly in Obama’s favor. Dems are insane.

The answer is NO, he is retiring. The following is from Wikipedia:
The 2008 United States Senate election for the state of Idaho will be held on November 4, 2008. Incumbent Republican Senator Larry Craig announced his intent to resign following accusations that he solicited another man for gay sex in a public bathroom. Craig later decided not to resign; however, he announced that he would not seek re-election.

RPN, I think the point was that PA doesn’t matter if McCain manages to carry the same states that Bush did during 2004. That would mean he would have the win all the states Musing mentions above. If he does, then PA is irrelevant. If he doesn’t, it might be mathematically possible for him to win if he lost either Nevada or New Mexico (both which went to Bush in 2004), but realistically it would be very difficult. He doesn’t have to win PA, but it would help offset a loss in another state elsewhere, certainly.

They most certainly can. Here’s the dictionary dot com definition of marriage: “1. the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc.”
This is legal for gays to do in all 50 states. If you think the fact that you can’t legally marry another man is discrimination, you’re mistaken. See, I can’t marry another man, either. What’s more, being married, I can’t even marry another woman. Boy, that really burns me! Neither can I marry my sister, which is unfortunate because she has health problems and I have good insurance.
Neither can I marry my dog, my mother-in-law, my toaster, Mr. Coffee……

Telling gay people they can get married is like telling a black person back in the 1940’s that they could go to school. They just couldn’t go to the white ones.
Besides, why would we want to encourage gay people to marry someone of the opposite sex when they have neither the ability or the intention of fulfilling their marital obligations? And what straight person is gonna want to marry someone who’s gay? That’s an absolutely ridiculous idea and presents a mighty poor image of what marriage is all about.

which of course is why I have said repeatedly that this will not be over until its over.
But let me ask the question this way:
- would McCain prefr his present poll numbers or the one’s that Obama has?
Or I can ask it this way:
- where is McCain placing his efforts in the last days of the election (hint toadya McCain is in Ohio, Ohio, Ohio, while Palin is in PA)?
McCain can win, but pretty much his only path is through Pennsylvania.
Obama has many options for winning and indeed can win even if McCain takes both Ohio and Pennsylvania, although it then becomes very challenging.
But we should see on Tuesday evening and this parlor game of polling will be over.

stubob/Peter L/anlir,
at root here would seem to be an assumptional disagreement. Is marriage:
1) a legal contract in the eyes of the law?
or
2) a religious convenant?
If it is a religious covenant, then your argument regarding history is just barely sustainable.
If it is a legal contract, then as structured, increasingly courts are finding the present model discriminatory.
Unless marriage is withdrawn from the public sphere and made a purely religious structure, recent history suggests that marriage will continue to be viewed in the contxt of civil rights and gay marriages will be increasingly allowed accross the country.

llama post 73,
so lets look at it from this perspective:
1) the pundits at this point expect McCain to lose: lets ignore them since they are in general acting subjectively
2) Intrade suggests McCain will lose: but this is assuing that the guess of a lot of individuals is itself intelligent
3) the national polls suggest McCain will lose: but these are a beauty contest
4) the state polls suggest that McCain will lose the electoral college: but these projections
5) it looks like McCain’s own campaign is beginning to act like McCain will lose: look at the increasing internal animosity which is breaking out into the open
6) McCain’s hard core supporters continue to think McCain will win
Pretty much only one group believes McCain will win.
Now it is true that the race is not always to the swift or the battle to the strong, but it is the way to bet.

llama post 73,
or lets look at it this way.
for McCain to win given these polls, there needs to be a widespread systematic error.
Now a 2% systematic error would not seem to provide McCain a win.
A 3% error would not seem to provide McCain a win.
A 4% error might begin to bring a squeaker in for McCain.
A 6% error would give McCain a plausible clean win.
So are you suggesting that there is a 6% systematic error in all the polling data?

Anlir,
Nobody said anything about encouraging homosexuals to marry. Stubob simply answered your untruth that they cannot.

Cheryl D.,
I’m focused on the practical reality, not the technical meaning of “is”.
