Speaking of Reconstructionists and Rushdoony, I saw this today:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2008-11-03/the-man-behind-proposition-8/

It talks about one Howard F. Ahmanson Jr., who happens to be the third largest individual donor in support of Prop. 8. He's also a huge disciple of Rushdoony.

That doesn't really change the fact that his beliefs are fringe, which I don't really disagree with you about. I just don't think they're "Paul Hill" fringe, if that makes sense.

And once again, Buddy, I would suggest that these elements are on the fringe.

Klasko #62:

Most people don't go as far as that guy, but there are many other instances where people head down the same road but stop short. For instance, I suspect there are more than a few mainstream believers who'd like to see sodomy laws put back on the books. Or, for instance, witness all the angst over gay marriage.

My point is that while those who cry "Christian Taliban!" *usually* do so as a gross exaggeration, there *are* still elements of American Christianity that fit that description.

Buddy Glass - your poster child for a "Christian Taliban" is one of the so-called Chgristians I mentioned that is heading down the road of cult. I can't think of many TRUE Christians who would take this guy seriously.

Anlir - I generally respect what you have to say, even when I don't agree with you, but your remark about a "Christian Taliban" is really over the top.

Do you honestly live in fear that the moral police will come in the middle of the night and disappear you? Because that is the type of hyperbole you're using. By your broad and sweeping brushstroke, I belong to your so-called "Christian Conservarive Republican" cabal which is obviously the forerunner of the soon to emerge "Christian Taliban" movement. We have been waiting for just the right moment to emerge and wreak terror on all manner of moral infractions. And that moment is the election of Obama.

Is that what you think of ALL the Christians on this blog? Even the Christians you claim friendship with? Is that what you really deep down in your heart of hearts think of us as individuals? That each one of us harbors a hatred of you and yours that goes so deep that we will become terrorists to force our will upon the rest of the country?

Christianity is not supposed to be a religion of hate, but it is also not supposed to be a religion that winks at and tolerates sin either. We serve a loving God who is also a holy God. (Holy means "set apart") He is set apart from the sins of man because He is God and not man. We are to be holy as His followers because He is holy. We are to set ourselves apart from sin. Now I'll admit that some of my brothers and sisters in Christ don't do such a great job of setting themselves apart from sins like pride and self-righteousness and gluttony and the sexual sins that are comon to heterosexuals, among other sins. I myself have a besetting sin that I have a difficult time setting aside, but all this illustrates that ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We ALL need a Savior to deliver us. The Christiasn is one who has admitted his sinfil failing before the Lord and accepted the free gift of the atoning death of Christ in his stead. Saints are nothing more than forgiven sinners who try not to continue in sin. We are all works in progress as we work out our salvation in the process of sanctification. We all have a lot of yuk that was part of us on the day of our salvation and God is in the process of dealing with it. Unfortunately, it does not disappear overnight and it is a process. You, Anlir happen to see some of us in various stages of unloading that yuk in our lives, and you conclude that we are all hypocrites, but we are undergoing the process of being set apart by God for Himself. Most of us take a lot of work.

It saddens me that some of my brothers and sisters, besides rejoicing in their own salvation also rejoice in the appearance of another's perdition. But to liken every Christian to the Taliban, Anlir, even for you this is an excess.

I will tell you that any Christian who behaves like a Taliban would be in the fringe and be thought of more as a cult member and not some one to be taken seriously among Christians, and would be condemned by the majority of God-fearing Christians. People wjo talk that way are not committing any crimes, but in my own mind, they have merginalized themselves and are not to be taken seriously by any God-fearing Christian, and are headed down the road of cult.

Serious George #58:

Read up on the terms "Theonomy", "Christian Reconstructionism" and "Dominion Theology". Rushdoony being the originator of the movement. This guy maintains a FAQ:

http://www.forerunner.com/theofaq.html

Some quotes:

"We are not looking for a "voice a the table" nor are we seeking "equal time" with the godless promoters of pornography, abortion, safe-sodomy subsidies, socialism, etc. We want them silenced and punished according to God's Law-Word."

"Therefore, the only people qualified to rule will be professing Christians who will uphold the moral law of God. This may be called a 'theonomic representative democracy' or a 'theocratic republic.'"

"We want civil government to punish evil doers according to biblical sanctions. We want all moral laws of the Old Testament to be enforced according to biblical standards."

"Capital crimes against the family include rebellion to parents, homosexuality and adultery. Sound harsh? Then what you are saying, in effect, is that God is harsh and that treason against the family is "not as bad" as treason against the state."
