Schumer compares conservative talk radio to porn
Earlier this morning, as I was updating the site, I thought I overheard Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer on Fox News discussing the Fairness Doctrine, equating pornography with conservative talk radio and saying that the two should be regulated the same way. I just found the clip online (thanks to Townhall.com), and it turns out I wasn’t hearing things (see below). Looks like free speech is going to take a hit if the Democrats prevail.

I don’t like Chuck Schumer, and I don’t like the Fairness Doctrine. I prefer free speech.
I know if I were a radio station or a talk show host, I’d be calling my attorney to ask to be the test case on this one.

This is no surprise. All Socialists and Marxists like Schumer immediately move to curtail free speech of those that do not agree with them once they come to power. Soon you will not be be compared to pornographers but to criminals on death row. It is part of their little Red book they march to in lockstep as they follow their newly annointed despot. Rights, like free speech, are only for them and only of you keep your mouth shut. Their views are the only ones allowed. These lefties are no different than Chavez, Castro, Mao and Stalin. Get used to keeping your mouth shut if you wnat to stay alive.

Here we go. The paragons of civil rights, the protectors of free speech everywhere, are about to tell citizens just who they can get information from. Presumably because we’re too dumb to screen our own sources.
So much for a free and open press.
Chuck Schumer is one scheming Senator (with all due respect…).

The elimination of free speech for conservatives will be second in line to taking away the secret ballot voting rights of union workers which is number one on thsie list of rights that will disappear. But, this is only the beginning.
In the past I have written about the many exmples of how the lefft is the onky group left in America that discriminates against anyone today. Now they will enact laws to make their biggotry and descrimination permanent. If you are a Christian, other religions don’t matter, it is time to think about changing to a new Messiah.

The liberals have been trying for years via the “Fairness Doctrine” to stifle Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, and other conservative radio voices, having failed with their own attempts at liberal talk radio. Should Obama be elected with a strong Democratic Congress, Schumer et al will probably succeed in accomplishing this.
Many conservatives, including not a few evangelicals, who out of pique didn’t support McCain, are about to get a dose of liberal reality. Limbaugh himself was quite the McCain basher.

Of course the smarmy upChuck will begin by redefining terms equating pornography to radio content by ignoring the visual/audio, apples to oranges difference. FCC regulation of visual images which children can be influenced by is appropriate. Children, even the adult sized versions that populate the party seeking to enact this Un-American, read Communist, control of the airways, obviously aren’t influenced by words without pictures they don’t understand. Hang around here long enough and you’ll see what I mean.
Excuse me, I need to shower again. I’ve just watched 1:13 of Schumer.

I thought liberals were more open minded than conservatives. Or at least that is what they are always telling us.
The (unspoken) motto for liberals:
“Free speech for me not for thee”

A couple of years ago, I heard Francis Beckwith speak on the distinction between motivation and reasons in policy. His point was that the reasons are the only thing that should matter. I have no doubt that Democrats are motivated by a desire to shut down conservative commentators. But the fact remains that the radio spectrum is a finite resource, and it is held in trust by the government. “Free speech” is not the sole criterion, here. (Btw, If it were, there would be no possible way for the FCC to prevent shock jocks from dropping the F-bomb every third word.) I don’t think that setting some requirements for the use of a public resource is absurd on its face.

Talk Radio = Porn

Abortion = Choice
Christianity = Islam

If Obama wins and gets a veto proof Senate, buy into XM-radio.

BTW—I find the YouTube play button directly over Schumer’s mouth highly appropriate considering what he’s proposing.
To the shower.

I’m all for limiting porn, but who gets to say what political view is porn, and how much “porn” is illegal?
The majority rule? In this case it seems that Democrats will be the majority, and they’ll get to set the parameters.
Not a good idea.
Report comment to moderator
Well, if the Senator from New York wants to censor free speech of Talk Radio, then he should have no problem censoring the porn industry and filtering all internet porn coming in from overseas.
Report comment to moderator
I’m still praying that we won’t be handed over.
Report comment to moderator
Senator Schumer’s comparison is not accurate: pornography is illegal in most instances and conservative ideology is not (at least not yet). So our laws should reflect and enforce the bans on illegal activity but not put that same ban on legal activity. Good research can give us loads of detrimental harm from pornography to civilized society. I don’t know of any harm documented from conservative talk shows. Senator Schumer’s liberal bias is showing; win the cultural debate by banning one side from showing up. How typical!!

This sounds like just the same kind of horse trading that gets done up on the hill: If you want A, then you have to take a hit on B, or put up with B, even though the two are unrelated. This is how pork gets made and now our elected representatives think they can get away with horse trading with the electorate.

So, is Schumer also in favor of silencing “pornographic” lyrics in rap and other types of music?
Or is it just conservative ideas that are particularly dangerous to society?
Report comment to moderator
So, will NPR (partially gov’t funded) actually have to let a conservative voice be heard objectively???
Report comment to moderator
The next thing we know they will be legislatively forcing colleges to have an equal number of Republicans as Democrats and parity between conservatives and liberals… NOT!!!!
Even the government funded schools will not be force to be fair.

It is unfair and double speak to equate the use of crude language with the expression of ideas and political beliefs. Having regulations that restrain the use of the F-bomb on the airwaves has nothing to do with oppressing the ideas and beliefs of others that express them in a non-crude way. Saying that regulating pornography is the same as controlling the expression of political and societal thoughts is tyrannical.
Report comment to moderator
One other point: Is Schumer saying that speech ought to be limited because it’s on public airwaves? Are we out of channels, shutting out some liberal entrepreneurs who are itching to start a new radio station, but just can’t because we’re out of airwaves?
Seems that liberal talk shows just aren’t in demand as much as conservative ones.
We have a limited number of trees. Why aren’t newspapers regulated as to the content of their speech? Printed papers certainly take some portion of a limited resource.
Report comment to moderator
Air American is a prime example of how much demand there is for liberal talk shows. Who wants to listen to Al Franken?
I’ll be flabbergasted if he wins in MN today. They get what they deserve if he does.
Report comment to moderator
#22 If Al does win I will immediately support a movemt to draft Dennis Miller. Whoda thunk an SNL alum would come out as a conservative??

They do not care what you think. The left will just build concentration camps, if they have to in order to shut you up, like they did for the Japanese in WW2 and put you in them claiming it is for your own good. They will redistribute your wealth until you are dead broke an then you will end up plain dead. But, even with your death they will still not learn self control, have shame or be satisfied.

I like the idea of saving the planet by forcing newspapers to give up printing and go on line instead. Sadly the left will only want to shut down the Wall Street Journal ans the New York Post leave the whack job papers alone to cut down every tree in the world if necessary until the left can confiscate all the computers from conservatives to give to Obama’s illegal alien relatives he has living on the USA’s welfare programs in Boston. He’ll get them the vote first though, not that it stopped them from voting for him today, by making them all US citizens just like you are. He doesn’t care about you. He does care about illegal aliens though. It’s just another thing to get used to.

Black rap “artists” have been performing vile, disgusting songs for over 20 years.
Who is the only person you can think up who has gotten into trouble for using those words?
That’s right, radio DJ Don Imus a cranky 65(?) year old white male.
Report comment to moderator
Free speech has been over for a long time, at least for white people.
In the logical and absurd progression of political correctness white people now have to be careful of the compliments to pay to minorities, especially black people.
Don’t ever tell black people they are articulate, reliable etc.

What a terrible comparison!
Conservative talk radio is far more obscene than mere porn!

Ed Philips,
Having regulations that restrain the use of the F-bomb on the airwaves has nothing to do with oppressing the ideas and beliefs of others that express them in a non-crude way.
Not true. The radio spectrum is in some sense owned by everyone. For that reason, the government can regulate radio and TV content to ensure that the spectrum is used in a way that is fair and acceptable to the public. Were this not the case, any kind of regulation, even against obscenity, would violate our freedom of speech.
If the spectrum has been allocated mostly to companies that push only the conservative point of view, the half of the public that disagrees with that point of view has a right to complain. The spectrum they own in common with everyone else is not being used in a way that is fair or beneficial to them.
In short, this is not “oppressing ideas.” It’s making sure that a finite, publicly owned resource isn’t unfairly monopolized.

So Rostin, if an equal number of airwaves are made available to any liberals who wanted to develop them into viable businesses, wouldn’t that suffice?
Must it be equal OPPORTUNITY, or equal OUTCOME?
The conservatives have made a go of it, at their own risk. The liberals tried and failed.
So take from the successful and give to the unsuccessful? (I started to put failures, but decided to be charitable…)
Must liberals redistribute not only wealth, but also the means of making that wealth? Is that how we define “fair” now?
Seems like the liberals could at least get their own audiences…
Report comment to moderator
Conservative talk radio is “porn”, but I’m still not in favor of regulating it.
Report comment to moderator
Oh Rostin – you mean the way the main stream news media are not monopolized? There are only a finite number of them and they are on the public’s airwaves too. Smacks of censorship to me…

I know I am wasting my time but I will ask you the same question I asked Spinoza.
Could you give an example of how conservative talk radio is porn?

I don’t know about conservative radio but conservative republico-religious blogging is certainly addictive.
And every so often one has the climactic moment of shouting into the the ether, “I don’t believe that ^%%$$ said that!”
Hey, maybe it really is all about sex!

From what I’ve seen so far…those that agree with Chuck-you Schumer on this issue share more than this ideology with him.
They also seem to believe that that the protection of the sanctity of marriage is a punchline and not a foundation for our future. They believe that the innocent and unborn do not merit the right to life, are are readily disposable. They dismiss REAL hate talk and call a healthy dissention of ideas not in alignment of their own as “porn”. And they call porn “art”.
And to think they also would love to see the Big BO as the leader of the greatest free-nation the world has ever known.

In the last days, good will be called evil, and evil will be called good. If christian broadcasts of sermons are considered evil, then “good” must be given equal time to share their opinions with the world?
Look up!

Chuck Schumer is just a big old screed-spewing gasbag.
