A fast from echoes
I propose an echo fast. What I mean is that I would like for my conservative Christian friends to step out of the political echo chamber and step back into the unmitigated Word of God. Can we go for one month with no Limbaugh, no Hannity, no Coulter? Can we go for 30 days without the predictable insights from World Net Daily? It shouldn’t be that hard, now that the elections are over.
Before we go further, let’s dispense with a predictable response, which goes something like this: “How come you’re telling us to get out of the echo chamber instead of the liberals?” It’s a too-common refrain from some conservative Christians, when they are criticized, to say, “What about those bad people over there?” Even my 4-year-old knows better than to excuse his muddy shoes by pointing at his brother’s muddier footwear.
The reason I propose a fast is because the echo chamber simultaneously heightens one’s sense of grievance, one’s sense of rightness, and one’s willingness to be ugly, none of which is becoming to a Christian—or anyone else, for that matter. The grievance comes out alternately as whining or paranoia: “The mainstream media worked to help Obama win.” “Sarah Palin was ambushed.” “Black people are the ones who are being racist toward us white people.”
The insufferable rightness, meanwhile, has Christians repeating scandalous rumors as truths: “Obama didn’t go back to Hawaii to visit his dying grandmother, he went back to doctor his phony birth record.” “He’s really an Islamic Marxist who hates America.”
The ugliness can be found whenever a Christian sounds more like Ann Coulter than Jesus Christ. On the day after the election I saw a thread on this site turn ugly, with self-professing Christians accusing an African-American brother in Christ of taking certain positions because he is black, questioning whether he considers Barack Obama a fellow black man because he isn’t a mass murderer, and even trading in hopelessly racist nonsense about “black” genes and “white” genes. And I wondered to myself: Would you speak this way to him over dinner? Or would you even suffer his presence at your table?
All this is no better, really, than the people who spent four years insisting the last two elections were “stolen,” and replacing the “s” in “Bush” with one of those Nazi SS-looking symbols. The only difference is that Christians ought to have some sense of shame about it.
So here is your penance, and mine, because there have been plenty of times in my life when I have behaved no better: Turn off the talk radio, turn off the cable talk shows, and pick up the Bible—not as a cudgel to wield against opponents, but as the God-breathed Word spoken to you and me. Perhaps we could begin with Matthew 7:12.

I no more accept Ann Coulter as legit political analysis than I do Colbert or his kin. Entertainmt? You betcha.
Now let’s all turn our efforts to the task of winning souls, spreading the Gospel and sharing/showing Christ’s love to the least among us. If the gals & their unborn kids entering the Carenet Center arent figurative or literal orphans and widows, I dunno who is.

I was the one Tony Woodlief quoted (obviously out of context) about Obama and being a mass murderer.
I will try again. Was is Obama considered black? He was abandoned by his black “father” when he was 2 years old and then raised by his white mother and white grandparents.
To then consider Obama “black” would be to dismiss the huge role Obama’s white grandparents played in raising him.
Here comes the tricky part. Under the exact same circumstances would blacks and white liberals consider Obama “black” if he had turned out to be a mass murderer rather than the next President?
As you can imagine no one answered the question.
Report comment to moderator
Mr. Woodlief you casually dismissed 3 grievances conservatives gave as “whining” or “paranoia”.
The three:
* The media favored Obama
* The media went after Palin
* Black people are being racist toward white people
Just for the record you never really disagreed with those examples but gave the impression you did. So do you say the above examples are false?

How about 30 days without the fawning, swooning treatment the “unbiased” media is giving Obama?
Let’s all keep in mind he is just a first-term Senator who has received unbelieveably lucky breaks.

Wow. It took less than 10 posts to shoot down the attempt to elevate the level of discussion around here. Maybe I have stayed too long at this dance.

Tony’s original blog set the tone for the posts that follow.
Without naming a single person Mr. Woodlief said Christians accused Obama of going back to Hawaii to doctor his birth records and that he hates America.

Nick,
I’ve heard both assertions you name in post 9. And yes, you lowered the level of discourse around here. Please, give it a rest on the “black people / Hispanics / Jews are bad.” I’d like to have a rest on naming any group of people as all bad.
And yes, that other thread was appallingly bad; I very much hope Anthony Bradley never read it, because he was not treated like a brother in Christ on that thread.
Michelle, I too never listen to any of those people–or the TV news (unless something huge is happening, like 9/11 or election day during a presidential election).

Maybe I overdo it but the overwhelmingly fawning treatment Obama has received has added to that. Wouldn’t you like to have a rest from Obama mania?
Having said that what did you think of Tony Woodlief’s gratuitous attack on Christians (see above). Why aren’t you offended by that?
Finally did you read Anthony Bradley’s disgraceful article on the Duke Lacrosse team? A link Mr. Bradley requested we visit. He made a number of very serious charges that were totally false.
I asked him if he ever retracted that story or apologized for it (he never responded) but yet you are angry with me not him.
Unusual to say the least.

Today’s Promise and Blessing
Monday 5th May 2008
Bible readings:
Psalm of praise for the day Psa. 93
There remains therefore a rest to the people of God. . For we have not a high priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace to help in time of need.
Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you
[reference: Heb. 4:9,15,16, Jas. 4:8]
Just a thought:
There is no need to worry about anything, we have an answer to every problem. We have somebody in heaven who not only can listen but will listen. A man who knows all about our problems, because He has been through them all Himself, so He knows the answers. The man who overcame the biggest problem of all – death. His name is Jesus Christ.
So, we can come to the throne of grace with confidence. He will hear us, He will hear us immediately, no need to keep repeating ourselves, and once we have made our case, we know He will give us His loving attention and care. What more do we want?
The problem we face is the confidence to draw close to Him. Well here is other promise, you start out to draw close to Him and He will come out and meet you, and then take you back with Himself into His throne room. There the Word is given and the power is released, and your problem is solved. All you have to do is trust Him. That is a promise, and it is as simple as all that.
Blessing:
The Lord bless you and may He grant you the confidence to draw close to Him, and enable you to share with him all of your worries and cares, knowing that he cares for you. His peace rule your mind, His love reside in your heart, and His Holy Spirit guide you in all that you say, and empower you to speak to Him in confidence.
Blessed be the Lord God Almighty King of glory and King of peace.
Blessed be He who delights to hear the prayers of His people, and to answer them in accordance to His will.

Tony,
If you feel this way, then why have you not INCLUDED WMB and World Magazine ?
You can think what you wish, but every single Believer is guided by the Holy Spirit –
I’m sure you mean well, but in your attempt to ‘DIRECT’ those here on the blog to a fast which you have outlined is most likely your directive from the LORD, which, if it is, then you could/would follow it. I don’t feel compelled in the least to follow such a an idea.
Fasting should come from the LORD to us individually. Fasting is a personal matter between man and GOD, it is not something which is brought before a group such as this, which has many checking in globally.
Christ never appointed a particular fast, HE did however tell us:

Nick H. Peters’ comments on this thread would be considered grotesquely ignorant and uncivilized, if not racist, by a conservative commentator like Shelby Steele.
Obama voluntarily accepted the identity and status of an African American, but society would have made him accountable for it anyway, on account of color. Society pre-assigned him. The dark-skinned child of a white family in America is held to be answerable for black culture.
Yet black culture is American culture — quintessentially and brilliantly. Rather than being diminished by his self-fashioning as a Black man, Obama realized his humanity as a social being. Just like immigrants from foreign lands, native citizens from earliest times have migrated to new countries within the great American society — other places and other cultures. We’re constantly getting up and moving to a land which has not yet been shown.
Peters’ phony “thought experiment” is disgusting. For one thing, you can’t be imagining honorable people as serial killers. Besides, African-Americans’ social image is heavily burdened by the implication of criminality, and it’s unfair to them.
This poster should be banned for fulminating racism.

YOU WRITE:… “This poster should be banned for fulminating racism.”
What about you, should you be banned as well? You make comments and statements, which are racist.
You made a statement on Glibness on the campaign trail POST 130 “For a hundred and fifty years, the government has prevented Negroes from taking revenge for their captivity, and it keeps 2 million criminals in prison while minimizing social unrest”
The statement above made by YOU, is talking about REVENGE, is this what its all about, are Nick’s remarks off limits but your’s aren’t? What kind of REVENGE are you seeking? Are your remarks racist?

Tony makes a “proposal”. Many take it as a commandment and react with blind defensiveness. Reminds me of the pharisees responses to Jesus. And, no I’m not saying Tony is just like Jesus. But I am saying that modern day pharisees are blind to their own prejudices, and sin. And sadly reinforce it all in their conversations with each other. It would do them, (us, ME) good to greatly increase our time with the Word of God and decrease our time listening to unwholesome words.
Thank you Tony for a good and wise proposal I will seriously consider.

Fisherman – 23
There is no blindness by stating what one believes, based on Scripture and that is exactly what I did in post 13 and 14, read it over again, if you missed it the first time. I and many others do not do “penance” – Jesus paid it all, we go to HIM for forgiveness, we cannot pay for our sins, or pay some sort of “penance” by not reading the news as Tony posted:
- “Can we go for one month with no Limbaugh, no Hannity, no Coulter? Can we go for 30 days without the predictable insights from World Net Daily?” –
It isn’t a rational request, nor would it serve any purpose, this may be the sites Tony chooses to visit and listen to but I doubt that many well read individuals bother with those, except WND – by the way, I don’t listen to Limbaugh, nor do I read or watch Coulter, there are dozens of news and wire services that have up to the minute news –
As far as “pharisees” go, it doesn’t apply – I posted my opinions just like everyone else. Below is the definition of “Pharisees”
Pharisees
Definition
Member of ancient Jewish religious group: a member of an ancient Jewish religious group who followed the Oral Law in addition to the Torah and attempted to live in a constant state of purity
Fisherman, the definition above doesn’t fit your ideas.

But that’s probably the “kiss of death” coming from me.

When one protests too much, character flaws and the subconscious are revealed.
The coarseness of American political culture is nothing new yet this doesn’t alleviate anyone’s responsibility. My daughter consider herself politically informed (for a 10 year old) and has already formed strongly held political beliefs. Although I hold similar positions (big shock) as my daughter and share in her disappointments and joys, I think its part of my role as a parent and adult to model a civilized response to losses and civil discourse with those who hold differences. Those who cannot express their political opinions in a manner that would not embarrass them if their child was listening should probably not expressed their opinions.
By all means withdraw from AM radio etc., but in the end its the attitude you bring to the plate that determines the level of decency bystanders hear. And for many, responsible behavior remains little more than a catch phrase meant to tag one’s opponent not a call to action.

I rarely agree with Scroop Moth, but Nick’s questions about “why don’t blacks call Obama white….” are, to put it bluntly, exceedingly stupid. I don’t agree that he should be banned, but I do wish he quit making a complete fool of himself by asking this imbecilic question. Obama is black, and if anyone saw him on the street they would say he’s black. And I’m pretty sure if he showed up at Nick’s house asking to date his daughter that Nick wouldn’t regard him as a white guy. He’d be black.
The offspring of a white person and a black person is a black person.

NT, I don’t agree. He might be an “African-American”, i.e. an American with African ancestry, but he might look white, hence one would consider him (or her) white.
In any case it doesn’t matter. It’s just skin pigment.

Excellent post, BTW, Tony.

Yeah, Matt, about one in a million kids who are born to a white/black pairing will look white.
That’s a low enough percentage that I stand by my statement, and most everyone on here would agree with it. If they didn’t know who Obama was, and saw him walking down the street, they would regard him as a black man.

and before you critisize it, keep this in mind, no program or leader/author is ever going to meet the all the needs in any one person’s situation, this is why we have the holy spirit, God’s word, and each other.
I read the previous criticisms of the acting in Fireproof, and I ask, for anyone acting in that movie, how easy would it be to go completely against culture and act in a movie with a message about real daily life in a marriage? I mean the things that really matter, like tone of voice, respect, where your heart is, etc., etc.,?? And as for the critic (you were paid for this? one who only watched 20 minutes…too bad you didn’t see the scene where the previously porn-addicted husband cried while he told his wife how wrong he had been for seven years. And too bad you did’t see her response to this repentance. Too bad you weren’t there for that experience. It was more than watching a movie. It was a holy moment, in reverence to God’s most holy gift.
It is a moment that many marriages never see, but because my boys have now seen the movie, they have beed impressed in some great ways. Many people’s lives will benefit from seeing Fireproof, whether they were “properly” entertained or not.

Thank you for this post. I’m bone-weary from this campaign and I intend to take Tony’s suggestion very seriously (I just read the earlier thread he mentioned for the first time and was stunned at much of it).
I don’t listen to many of those mentioned, but I confess that over the past year I have spent way too much time and energy “consuming” the partisan yammering that is out there.
I sense this is an excellent season in which I should reassess and check my own attitudes — to reaffirm (and more faithfully practice) the biblical admonition to be “quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger” (James 1:19)

I had to laugh. First you attributed a quote that I didn’t say and then topped it off by saying the offspring of a white person and a black person is a black person. And then you write I made a fool of myself.
That comment is far, far more inane than anything I have ever written on this site. Repeat that comment at your job tomorrow and see how long it is until you are fired.
