Two cultures
“When leaders lead in Israel, when the people willingly offer themselves, Bless the Lord!” (Judges 5:2).
This is a description of the ideal situation, is it not? National leaders who truly lead; citizens who serve the nation with great hearts for the national good. “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country,” and all that.
My sister-in-law came to visit me last week from her new home in Silver Springs, Md. When the economy threatened, she left a good job in the private sector in Florida for the greater security of a job with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
But don’t ask me what exactly she does. I tried several times to get something out of her and she kept insisting she doesn’t do anything. What do you mean you don’t do anything, I pursued. I pretty much sit around all day, she said morosely.
Having cut her eye teeth in a fast-paced environment of snappy deadlines, and being by nature energetic, my sister-in-law was not prepared for the culture shock of the difference between employment where your job depends on hard work, creativity, and a willing spirit, and employment where your job is secure despite your indolence. She doesn’t cotton to watching the hands of a clock make circles, even if she’s getting paid for it.

“She doesn’t cotton to watching…”? What does that mean?

It doesn’t sit well with her; it bothers her.

Oh, how I relate to her job situation. There is much more discipline required to work “as to the Lord” when the earthly boss just doesn’t care or, in my case, encourages indolence. I will pray for her day today. And look forward to the coming of our King!

2 – Thanks, Michelle. I must say I’ve never heard of that expression before.

Bianca you and my Long Island-born wife are most-likely always amazed at colloquialims I’ve heard all my life.
This posting reminds me of a Nietsche quote:
Said the Goat to the sheep “Follow me so I wont be afraid to lead you!”
Said the Sheep to the Goat: “Lead us so we wont be afraid to follow you!”

Andree, I’m sure many can relate to your description of govt employee status. There are legions of hard-working GS folks out there but I’m sure most readers with direct experience with civil servants have more negative than positive anecdotal evidence.
At the university of Texas several years ago, the support staff organized a union. Many no doubt had legit grievances. Austin Texas at that time was high on the crest of a jobs boom in all the I.T. industries lured there. Employees of Samsung, AMD, Motorola etc were bringing home huge paychecks and bidding up the prices for the limited-by-zoning available housing stock. The support staff of clerks and secretaries were feeling the pinch
The organizers took an almost threatening and quite adamant tone, arguing that they could earn so much more in the non-state employee sector with allegedly transferrable skills. Many of those voicing the loudest grievances had worked on campus for 12 or more years.
Twelve years?? In such low-pay jobs? When the private sector would readily snatch up their talents?
No one who can do better elsewhere would stay in a job he hated for that long.

Llama and Sawgunner – Okay, thanks for the clarification! I guess it’s good to learn something every day!

I spent over 33 years working in the United States Department of Agriculture. There is more down time than actual work taking place. Everyone in all of the offices claim to be overworked but when you know what work is coming in and how long it takes to do it you realize everyone is blowing smoke. There is so much waste in the government but no one inside will admit to it. There are plenty of unneeded positions and even more worthless and wasteful programs that are foisted upon the American public by the also worthless and wasteful Congress.
But you haven’t seen anything yet. Wait until the Democratic majorities in congress get rolling next year with a Democratic President.

Llama, remember back in ‘96 when we first learned that the Feds actually have employees who qualify to be called “NonEssential Government Workers”?

I work for the VA and there are many government employees who work extremely hard every day and are dedicated to the veterans that we serve. There are also some employees who would never survive in the “outside” world of employment but are still in their jobs because they are protected by the union. Please do not lump all federal employees into the same category. Many of us are Christians who believe that we have been called to make a difference at our workplace.

I had a co-worker, who was a veteran who became terminally ill. One day he was fine but he became sick and it was found that he only had a couple weeks to live. There were around five or six of us (government employees) who ministered to him and comforted him in his last days. He prayed to receive Christ into his heart and there is one more soldier in Heaven today. If I have been called to my job for no other reason than him, it was enough.
