Islamists mock death of Bush cat
In today’s weird news, Islamic militants are ridiculing the death of the Bush family cat. The First Lady’s office announced yesterday that the family’s 18-year-old cat, India, passed away. AP said commentors on an Islamist extremist web site broke with their usual “humorless” postings to ask where the wake would be held. One commentor said, “This is not the right time to die. It is a dilemma for the Arab leaders at this time because they are busy and have to leave the region to offer condolences.”
More proof that terrorists aren’t nice?

Has anyone ever claimed that terrorists are nice?

Not to defend terrorists or anything, but I can see how the news of the death of the President’s cat would seem really bizarre in their culture and why it would strike them as amusing and worthy of mocking. And I mean, come on–is this really any less “nice” than our comedians?

If a Danish artist did a single panel cartoon depicting Muhammad and Bush’s cat in heaven, would NBC censor footage of Ann Coulter laughing at the hordes of Islamic protesters?
Don’t all answer at once…

In Islam there are eleven things which are impure:
urine, excrement, sperm, bones, blood, dogs, pigs, non-Muslim men and women, wine, beer, and the sweat of the excrement-eating camel.
Nothing about cats …

This would be typical of their attitudes.

Poor kitty.
Report comment to moderator
I agree — poor kitty. India had a long life. What more can a cat ask for?
I remember the first Christmas the Bushes were in the White House, GWB made a comment on a Christmas tv program about the new dog Barnie, how he was learning to pay attention and follow orders. He then commented to the effect that cats are unto themselves, so leave it alone. At that moment, I knew he understood what life is really about.

I think there was just some miscommunication here. The extremists were from Pakistan and simply read that India was dead. They were overjoyed at the news.

Xion’s post made me curious about how cats might be viewed by Muslims, and I found this.
So apparently they have more reverence for cats than I might have guessed. I guess my first post on the subject was wrong.

I just posted and my post didn’t appear, so I rewrote it and posted it again, thinking I’d done something wrong. It still isn’t appearing. If two nearly identical posts from me show up later on, that’s why.

Hmmm. My post still isn’t showing up. I’ll try again.
Xion’s post got me curious about what the Islamic view on cats might be, and I found this. (This is actually a different article from the one I linked in the posts that didn’t appear, but it says similar things.)
Anyway, apparently Muslims have more reverence for cats than I would’ve guessed so my first post on this topic was wrong.

This time I messed up on closing the link, but it still works.

I brought my dog into my class of muslim kids who came to the local christian community center. My point was to use the dog as an example of Gods unconditional love for us.
Well I didn’t know dogs were considered unclean. Some of the kids were terrified I would let the little dog go and it might touch them whereas others were curious and wanted to pet it. If I had ever known, I never would have brought the dog because it was hard enough getting the muslim kids into our community center knowing we believe in Christ let alone start keeping them there with “unclean” animals.
But the dog, in the true spirit of “unconditional love”, loved both the kids that were nice to him and to those who were terrified of him, thus better illustrating the very point I was trying to make.
Cats in the middle east I have been told are considered to carry demonic spirits?

The death of the president’s cat wasn’t for terrorist edification and planetary consumption, it was just a little footnote in home news… I would hardly characterize the story as “bizarre,” even by urbane, sophisticated terrorist standards.

“Cats in the middle east I have been told are considered to carry demonic spirits??
That thought has crossed my mind.

I wasn’t implying that their standards were urbane or sophisticated. I just can’t see that part of the world considering the death of a pet, even in a footnote, as newsworthy. I think it would strike them as funny. I don’t really know about the Middle East, but I see in my husband’s Indian culture that pets just don’t hold the place in people’s hearts and minds that they do here.

According to the article I linked, “Islam teaches Muslims to treat cats well and that the cat is a creature to be cherished and loved. Mistreating a cat is regarded as a severe sin in Islam.”
Report comment to moderator
Ree, if islam teaches its followers to cherish cats, I suppose that would add it up with the notion that cats carry demonic spirits (from a christian perspective)?
Report comment to moderator
I agree with REE; this is no meaner than what our comedians talk about. I mean, c’mon, I was laughing at the cat’s name a second ago.
Really, the only thing that cannot be tastefully mocked is the death of a child.
