Let’s do lunch
In an historic gathering at the White House, President Bush hosted President-elect Barack Obama and former Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Carter for lunch.
Is it just me, or do you find it a bit odd that President Carter is off to himself a bit in the photo? Either he doesn’t want to get too close to those other guys or they don’t want to cozy up to him too much. At least they positioned him correctly—on their far left.

I think they are snubbing Carter because he didn’t get the black suit memo.

If they put Carter to the far left, shouldn’t Obama be there too?

Peter, maybe he should be positioned leftward, but his positioning is appropriate to his political career in these two ways:
1) Obama hasn’t actually done any governing yet.
2) He is hiding in the Bushes.

Politics aside, as a history buff, it’s pretty cool to see five presidents in one picture.

Carter knows that if he stands too close to Clinton, he’s likely to pick up a social disease.

I think it is historically wonderful. I think it was thoughtful and respectful of Obama to ask if it could be done and I think it was classy of President Bush to do it. I think it was very classy that he told Obama “We all want you to succeed.” Don’t you think he will be doing the happy dance all the way back to Texas???

I also noted that Obama was between the two Bushes

Kim,
It is historically wonderful, but this isn’t the first time five presidents have been photographed together.
Bush the Elder was photographed with his four predecessors (Reagan, Carter, Ford and Nixon), and I think W did a picture with Ford, Carter, Bush and Clinton.
Clinton, W and Obama aren’t that old. We could be seeing more of these pictures in the next couple decades.

I know it isn’t, but they didn’t gather in 1981 to chat and encourage Reagan. These 4 men got together to welcome the newest member. THAT hasn’t been done before. This is the first time since 1981 they have all been back in the Oval Office. They have been photographed at funerals and other events. Obama asked if they could all have lunch together. Bush made it happen. I think it was a classy thing to do. Maybe it will set a precedent for the next incoming president.

Very cool! I bet they talked about sports and women.

Hearing Victoria dismiss a blog post here as a joke is worth the price of admission.

Not to criticize George the younger, but what the heck is he looking at?

There had to have been others in the room; looks like maybe one of them had just made an amusing comment and G.W. looked toward the speaker. If Mickey hadn’t posted the picture it’s likely I wouldn’t have seen it, and I do think it’s a unique and positive moment. Thanks to Obama and Bush and the others who cooperated. I agree with Kim, posts 7 and 10.

#13 the door. He is looking for his escape route to get the heck out of Dodge just as soon as he can.

Kim, you are ‘on’ today. Good posts across-the-board on all threads. Must be something good in the air down there!

What a nice picture and what a great country in which we live where this can happen.

#s13 & 15- He is either looking at the door, as Kim says, or he’s looking at Laura with that secret smile the two of them have that says things only married couples can translate.

Thank you Travis. I will take that as a true compliment and enjoy it.

I laughed at Carter when I saw the photo and then last night at church I saw one that made me cringe. It was taken at the Christmas Production I was a part of at our church. The last scene of the modern day drama was the group around the tree. There you had 8 characters. 7 very close together and 1 standing a little apart. Guess who? I had no clue it looked like that!! I immediately had compassion for President Carter.
