Voices in the head
Many people hear voices in their heads, but some of those voices are “benevolent,” leading their hosts to think of themselves as psychics and mediums. I learned this from my latest issue of The Atlantic, which is without a doubt the second-finest magazine in the country. This little news item illustrates how alien a creature we make man when we remove his spirit.
There’s been no actual removal of the spirit of walking, talking man, of course; this operation was long ago performed on his cousin, that strange, shadowy man-creature who populates the journals of science and economics. It’s the de-spirited man who goes to war because of economic pressures, or provides for a family because his genes cry out for dispersion. He is a creature driven by material and physical causes, and not out of any deep existential longing to know his Creator. This is quite convenient to the scientist, as it turns out, because while he is well equipped to study the material and physical, he hasn’t the first clue how to assay the spiritual.
But let’s set aside real man’s de-spirited cousin for a moment and consider this business of voices in the head. When a real man claims to hear voices in his head, there are three basic possibilities: The man is lying, his brain is talking to itself, or some other being is doing the babbling. When the modern de-spirited man claims to hear voices, however, it must be a problem in the brain’s wiring. This again is convenient for the scientist because there are pills and shock therapy for wiring. There is no pill for actual disembodied voices, except the sort that place the victim in a catatonic stupor.
And voices aren’t always problematic, as it turns out, because sometimes they are “benevolent.” By erasing man’s spiritual quality—indeed, the spirit world altogether—we have ruled out the possibility that the voice actually belongs to another being, and that this being—whether he uses soothing tones or not—doesn’t have the man’s best interests at heart. So long as he doesn’t make his victim feel bad, reasons the scientist, who are we to say that he ought not be there?
That’s a pertinent question when you think about it, but we have already gone too far afield from the domain of science, because spirits can’t be touched or measured, and hence can’t exist. Therefore the voice you might be hearing isn’t really there at all. And really, is he all that bad? Here, take this pill. Or start your own Tarot Card shop. And if neither of these avenues helps you, well, we’re terribly sorry. We’re only scientists, after all.

I didnt realize there was someone else out there who thought so highly of Birdwatcher’s Monthly. But I confess I really don’t read it all that much; like most I buy it for the awesome photos.

What an arrogant article! All of the technological and medical advancements that you enjoy (including the medium through which this article was published) are products of science. It’s ironic that the author would denigrate science via one of its great accomplishments. A recent article in the New York times gives a much more accurate and far less cynical view of science.

Oh, come on GWF81. He’s not disparaging science in general, he’s just saying ti doesn’t have all the answers. It can’t answer spiritual questions. He’s pointing out the foolishness of people who expect metaphysical answers from physical sciences.

This is a pretty snide way to say that science doesn’t deal with the metaphysical, especially considering that scientists never claim to deal with the metaphysical. However, there are many immaterial concepts that have physical underpinnings. In fact, the very title of this article is a real symptom of real brain disorders. People that suffer from schizophrenia and dementia do not find relief in spiritual endeavors, but in science-based medical treatment.

While I mostly agree with GWF81’s bottom line, I don’t think Tony’s philosophy is simplistic. In fact, Tony’s probably on to the most high-brow thing going. Tony’s sympathy for Romanticism, truth, beauty, and the Voice, puts him in in very celebrated company, maybe the best. As modernism has confessed, it’s so difficult and tragic to relinquish notions that are so pretty to think about. Further, Tony’s interests could lead him in surprising directions. Anti-reductionism is as good a path as any out of Evangelicalism.
I wonder if he’s been reading the amazingly enduring Owen Barfield, especially maybe Unancestral Voice.

Schizophrenia is not a comparison to dementia-
Dementia can be found in a vast amount of the elderly, it can be part of aging, just as the body doesn’t function like it did in the past-
There are many passages of Scripture which speak of evil spirits, demons and the devil – Those who hear voices such as schizophrenics have baffled science for years, most of the med’s don’t help – what some accomplish is to keep the patient quiet, and that doesn’t always work-
I found out about a group who had a day-care for schizophrenic’s and very mentally ill adults – I decided to volunteer – they did crafts and other interesting things to occupy themselves. I went over and talked to the person who had founded and ran the organization, she answered all my questions and was very interested in my joining and helping, I was too -
What happened next I was not prepared for; the woman opened a door and there sat a group of people at a table doing crafts, which appeared they were enjoying themselves – I was standing beside the woman in the door way,….all of a sudden without warning, many of these people stood up and began making guttural noises and behaving as if they would jump the table and attack, they were very angry – needless to say I was afraid. I began backing away never taking my eyes off these people as they became so agitated it was obvious nothing good would come of this situation – the woman backed out as well and shut the door -
I questioned her as to why these very sick people were allowed to walk around in public, she said they were under medication (obviously not working)- I asked why they had reacted to my being there – I hadn’t said one word to any of them – She couldn’t answer the question, she didn’t know.
I believe that many schizophrenic’s have spiritual problems that have not been dealt with, perhaps from childhood, or as adults, even middle age or older. I also believe that when they are in close contact with strong Believers they are intensely aware of it.
One of my oldest friends is schizophrenic – she came back to the LORD shortly after we became friends – we would spend lots of time together, she married and had a son – it became apparent that she had problems a few years later, drinking had become one of them, along with prescription drugs – she then wanted a divorce, her husband found counseling but she wanted none of it (he is a very prominent attorney) they divorced and she moved – her life became a nightmare, she started drinking a lot, she heard men talking in her attic and called the police often to check it out – she begged me to believe what she heard was true. Making a long story short – our friendship suffered – the more she strayed away from the LORD the worse it got – It’s been a terrible thing to watch this beautiful, talented woman in such a condition (she is an operatic singer) she started smoking and coughed endlessly.
People can blow off the idea of spiritual problems attached to schizophrenia but I believe there is a very strong link –
Those whom Jesus came in contact were cured, they had been possessed – Of course science doesn’t want to believe that spiritual problems can be part of the problem, but from my experience I believe it is.

Shows what I know. “little blue pills” just popped into my head. I don’t take any pills other than some aspirin once in a while so the color of pills doesn’t mean much to me.

I’ve been reading a biography of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her husband, Calvin apparantly had both auditory and visual hallucinations of the “benevolent” kind. I won’t go into detail here, but it was fascinating to read about. Atypical, as it started from his earliest memory; schizophrenia usually becomes evident in late teens or early twenties.

So science created all these products? How does science create things on its own? Science is merely a man’s tool for understanding of the natural world. These processes, mechanisms, etc are established before, science merely uncovers them and seeks to understand them. It does not create.
So the credit for discovery goes not to science, but to man and sometimes even with the help of his inner voice.
