Two of President Obama’s nominees for his cabinet have had trouble paying taxes – not just some chump change here and there, but tens of thousands of dollars. Now-confirmed Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner had to pay about $34,000 in back taxes. The oversight, he said, was “unintentional.”

Tom Daschle, nominee for secretary of Health and Human Services, hadn’t paid over $100,000 in taxes – again, “unintentional” – a revelation that came amid his confirmation hearing.

Does the Obama administration have a vetting problem? Obama’s nominee for Commerce Secretary, Bill Richardson, withdrew his name when he came under federal investigation for corruption. Whatever the substance of the difficulties these nominees find themselves in, the image is at best unhelpful for an administration that opened by issuing executive orders on ethics and reform.
