Persuasive argument
Lia, a 12-year-old girl from Toronto, was assigned to come up with a persuasive speech for her seventh grade class. Teachers told her the topic she chose was “too big,” “too mature,” “too controversial,” and if she went forward with it she would not be allowed to advance to the schoolwide competition or beyond.
Lia, however, would not be swayed, and once her teacher heard her presentation, she declared her the class winner. But when Lia spoke before the entire school she was initially disqualified because of her topic. Later, one of the judges who was offended by the speech stepped down, and the remaining judges reversed their earlier decision and declared Lia the school’s winner and representative in a regional competition. She didn’t win the next round, but later found out that her speech, which has been posted on YouTube, was a winner in another way.
Lia’s mom told Bound4Life:
“Lia wasn’t really that upset though, especially when she considered that the only difference between winning the competition and not winning was having a couple extra pictures taken and being given a small trophy. Lia has a much bigger trophy—somebody commented to us on our YouTube account that her aunt watched Lia’s video and decided to NOT have an abortion because of it. Yay God! Others have commented that they either never thought of the issue before or were pro-choice—but now they have changed their opinions. So, having a life saved is the best trophy ever!”

Well done girl. Well done.

I notice this isn’t above her pay grade….

Well said, child. My kids watched it with me. They said something about David and Goliath. It will be interesting to hear how they process it and talk with their sister.

Nicely done!
My children have received lower grades because of speeches or papers done on this subject. They did them anyway, when they felt they had something to say. One was told that she couldn’t do a paper on it in a college class, but when she brought up a new angle, she was not only allowed to do the paper, but the teacher showed it around to others.

I am struck by a couple of things that a 12 year old girl knows and insane lefty whack jobs cannot comprehend regardless of their age.
1. That mothers are legally allowed to murder their children through abortions.
2. That fetus’ have rights too, as many rights as GITMO Islamofascists do in US courts.
This young girl needs to be called before a joint session of congress to answer any questions the insane left would oppose her with. I’m guessing she could easily hold her own and make the lefties look like the child murderers they are.
In fact. I would think that Marvin Olasky might be able to get the messiah to make this happen, since he is the one we have been waiting for oh so long. Every person that would have been murdered and now will be spared because if this wise little girl forever is indebted and owes their life to her.
Can’t wait to see she grows up to be. Hopefully she will President one day and a Supreme Court Judge.

Magnificently done.
On one hand, it’s disturbing that a 12-year-old girl even knows what abortion is. Knowledge of man’s inhumanity might be compassionately withheld from one of such tender years.
OTOH, the culture is so sexualized, so crass, so coarse, that 12-year-olds can no longer be protected from the truth.

At that time Jesus answered and said, “I praise Thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou didst hide these things from the wise and intelligent and didst reveal them to babes. Matt 11:25

The difficulty, Stubob, is that the children know all about sex, they simply do not realize or understand what the results are. Grown ups don’t want to tell them where babies come from but they have already learned the rest from tv, billboards, magazine racks, internet, school, etc.

It grieved me to see her discuss rape–what a shame that she’s introduced to such topics as rape and abortion because we can’t agree that a mother is carrying a live, distinct, separate human being.
Report comment to moderator
Oh, right, Mumsee. I agree completely. It just saddens me that childhood has become so short, even as adolescence has become so long.

Yes and yes on 12 and 13. In and ideal world. But, as Stubob well knows, we do not live in an ideal world. My kids know stuff I cannot imagine knowing at their age. I want them to be able to talk with me about it so make certain to toss the terms out on occasion to make them comfortable with that rather than it being a subculture in our family, only to be spoken of with other children.

That would be “in an ideal world”

That girl looks strikingly like I did at her age. Her wisdom, though, far surpasses mine at the same age. I don’t think I had an opinion on abortion at the time–I probably didn’t yet know what it was, even though Roe v. Wade was decided when I was exactly her age. But I remember how I used to think and my insistence on my own radical autonomy, even as a child. There was never a time, prior to the age of 24, when I ever considered that abortion might be wrong. What an amazingly bold and courageous girl!

If you go straight to you-tube you will see that her parents had to cut off comments because of the hateful pro-abortion comments. Someone had resubmitted it and one commenter suggested that she should have been aborted. So much, for pro-chice tolerance.

Wonderful job! How refreshing to see a young person stand up for the weak and oppressed with wisdom and clarity!
It is amazing to me that group that demands tolerance and choice would hurl nasty comments at a child.
Their mean-spirited retorts reveal what’s really in their hearts.

I thought this was amazing! When I was twelve, I didn’t have enough knowledge to even understand what she was talking about.
I can understand why some didn’t want her to give it.
But the last half of the 20th century was (is) the “age of irresponsibility”. i.e. There is no penalty.

I always think there is an unfortunate disconnect within the democratic party because they do seem to care for the weak and disadvantaged, but fail to recognize those who are the very weakest and most disadvantaged.
I took an early childhood psych class a few years ago that was taught by a very liberal feminist who had just given birth to her first child. She was ecstatic about the joys of pregnancy and motherhood. She talked on and on in class about all the things a fetus in the womb can do—you can see its heartbeat, it can suck its thumb, and it even responds to music. So one day while she was in this expansive mood, I raised my hand and asked if a fetus could also feel pain.
The poor woman stopped in mid rave, her jaw dropped and she just stared at me like a deer in the headlights. For a full 10 seconds there was total silence in the room. I think the 35+ students were holding their breath. You couldn’t hear a paper shuffle or a pin drop, but I know the word ‘abortion’ went through everyone’s mind. Finally she stammered some comment about inconclusive research on that question, and quickly changed the subject. She was clearly not happy with me. I was lucky that she was too busy to give anything but multiple choice tests, because I was unable to get anything higher than a B- from her on my subsequent papers.
There is a price to pay for doing the right thing. At 12, Lia has learned early that it’s worth it.

Interesting,
I teach grade seven not to far from Toronto. I would give the child an A or A- depending on the rubric I was using and if there was a research or written component. Her “facts” obviously came from one side of the dispute but that’s not necessarily a big deal at this age. As a speech, you usually judged the delivery, poise and enunciation as well as a content. Her delivery was excellent and well spoken, a little over the top in her enunciation and a little too empathic but again not a significant problem. She struck me as fairly young for grade seven and that shows a little in her poise but as I already stated an A.
As a teacher, I would have initially advised against the topic just because of its divisiveness. My own daughter did her speech this year on the Holocaust (grade 5 speeches are usually factual or informative not persuasive) a heavy topic I initially told her not too but she insisted.

Thank goodness the daughter has more sense than her teacher parent and stood her ground against an abusive, limiting and restrictive parent. Don’t the whack jobs in Canada take kids away from parents like these as a matter of social consciousness and universal wellness for victimized children?

She addressed the usual objections from those who advocate abortion.

Ree, you must be a pretty woman.
Report comment to moderator
Well, thank you, Bob, although I don’t know that you’d necessarily say that if you actually saw me. Oh well–I’ll take it as a compliment anyway.
I don’t think the girl is really all that pretty, though. To me, she looks kind of cute, but a little bit plain–kind of how I see myself, come to think of it.

As someone who coaches and judges speech activities, I would have preferred the speech be memorized. That said, I’m with HRW as to the delivery.
Cameron’s point (she had to deal with date-rape) emphasizes why we generally point children away from such topics. It is adult. I have found it better to have speeches that are better suited to the child’s experience or maturity.
Finally a word about content and structure. In the high school students I coach, we work on who the audience is they seek to address, who do they see themselves addressing? Had the speech had a better sense of its Canadian setting, the speech would likely have advanced further.

“Had the speech had a better sense of its Canadian setting, the speech would likely have advanced further.”
Not being Canadian, I’m not sure what that means.

Well since, no doubt, this girl has at least one classmate who’s gotten pregnant, I’d say this topic is pretty relevant for her audience.

Her assignment was to make a persuasive speech. This to me is an opening or a closing argument, so her facts would come from the side she is advocating.
I don’t understand why anyone would question the child’s maturity. Why can’t you speak about what you want to speak about? I think the problem is that people don’t want her argument to be heard.

Barack Obama, coming out of the starting block as President, said this on the recent anniversary of Roe V Wade:
“On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons: the chance to attain a world-class education; to have fulfilling careers in any industry; to be treated fairly and paid equally for their work and to have no limits on their dreams. That is what I want for women everywhere.” ~ President Barack Obama, January 22, 2009, the 36th anniversary of Roe V Wade.
In other words (spoken in the context of advocating abortion on demand), we shouldn’t let innocent human life stand in the way of a girl’s education, career or other perceived opportunities. Sadly, some see a career as something to die for. Obama also wants it to be something to kill for.

I believe Harris is referring to the evidence she presents — it came from American sources and contained American stats. She may have done better if she did some Canadian research but honestly I think her speech went as far it could. I have heard better at this level — she’s fairly young for grade seven and her tone reflects this.
She addressed the usual objections from those who advocate abortion.
I thought it was a bit of a caricature but given her age she did a fair job.
Well since, no doubt, this girl has at least one classmate who’s gotten pregnant, I’d say this topic is pretty relevant for her audience.
Evidence? Its extremely rare for a grade seven girl to be pregnant and I teach in a school board with one of the highest levels of teen pregnancy in Ontario.
However, I do agree that some of the content is relevant — the grade seven health curriculum covers sexual harassment and fertilization and in grade eight it covers date rape and birth control.
Report comment to moderator
HRW notes the point I was trying to make.
And as to evidence, if the Canadian model is like ours in forensics, then the written speech would have included more documentation.
