Spring Break (broke)
For as long as I can remember, I have lived on a school-year calendar: The bulk of the work takes place September-May, with a long summer break from June to August, a two-week Christmas break in December, and a week off sometime in the spring.
Now that I’m in charge of the school-year calendar, I continue to fall into that same routine. Part of it is out of functionality—my husband, Craig, is a school teacher, so it makes sense for all of us to take time off when he does–but part of it is out of sheer necessity, as this homeschooing mama needs a break.
This week, as we are on said spring break, I took my girls to Oklahoma to visit my parents for a few days while Craig plays Bob the Builder on a renovation project at home. I brought nothing to do, and part of me is going insane having nothing to do. The other part of me, however, is slowly—very slowly—starting to relax a bit . . . and that’s what I need right now.
My problem is that I don’t rest when I should and can’t turn my brain off to get a decent night’s sleep. When I can’t sleep, I think of Psalm 127:2: “. . . for he grants sleep to those he loves.” Uh-oh.
Now don’t worry: I know better. I’m not sleeping not because God doesn’t love me; I’m not sleeping because I don’t know how to enjoy his good gift of rest. Perhaps if I were to more faithfully submit to God’s (and my husband’s) call to weekly Sabbaths, these longer breaks would be the blessings they’re meant to be instead of the burdens I sometimes feel they are.
When I’ve rested as I should, I’m usually ready to return to the work to which I’m called. I know that is true for this week, and I think it would be true for every week . . . if only I would rest as I should.
How about you? Do you take a proper weekly Sabbath rest? What’s your philosophy on taking breaks from the school-year calendar/mentality?

I’m retired. I don’t have many deadlines imposed by other people very often. I no longer have to get up at 4:30 or 5 AM. Hallelujah!!

We try to see to it that all of us get a rest. I pack a picnic and we hang out by ourselves in the church basement so there are no house work distractions. The kids have indoor games and a playground which are different from home life.
As far as spring break, we have one on spring break and two busy doing school. The two doing school are happier than the one on break. They thrive on consistency and this gives them something to do. The third needs others for entertainment and is trying to figure out how to entertain herself.
We also do some work over summer so we do not have to spend a quarter in review. It is fun to have kids who love school and work way beyond what is necessary. I shall enjoy it as long as I can.

If you stay away from Mexico it should help the sleep department some if you don’t let your kids go there either.
Poor Hillary, who is in Mexico on her spring break from Wee Willy (nothing is too dangerous to get away from him), trying to make the US seem more compassionate, conscious of our past errors and mistakes adn trying to convey that the messiah has seen the light clearly. The one that Mexico has been shining in our eyes for decades. She came as clean as lefty can and admitted that the drug problem is solely due to drug users in the USA who create the demand and have the money to pay for it and that the problem with Illegal Aliens …eeerrrr….I mean illegal immigrants ….. eeerrrr….I mean victimized Mexican, migrant, undocumented, guest workers is caused solely by US business owners who illegally give jobs to them.
Sadly for Hillary, Obama still hates her and her husband more than Bush, and made her look like a liar and a panderer when his Lesbian Attack Homeland Security Chief….I mean Indian…errrr ….make that Advisor told us, even more easily fooled anti real American citizens and peons that she would no longer allow the DEA or other federal law enforcement types to arrest drug users and dealers in the dozen states where state law allows pot use and that federal law enforcement officers would no longer arrest pot users in any state to concentrate on teh dealers in the 38 states that still do not allow Pot smoking.
The Lesbian Advisor, went on to put the knife deep in Hillary’s chest twisting it by also announcing that Federal law enforcement personnel would no longer raid businesses who hire Mexican Migrant workers or arrest the owners of them for any reason. Nor would they be allowed to enforce most other federal Illegal immigration laws. She also announced she was starting an investigation at Obama’s request since she works for him, into any and all state and local law enforcement officials, like Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who actually enforce any federal or state illegal immigration laws of any kind.
Ignore what these liars say and watch what they do instead. You have to feel for Hillary though being made out to be Obama’s stooge looking lap dog and all.

Bob,
I too am retired, except for market trading so I still get up at 4:30 AM being on West Coast time this time of year. I catch the end of Europe trading, I don’t have much going on there anyway, and the US and southern hemisphere emerging markets open 2 hours later. I’m done by 1-2 PM which is nice so I cn get some sleep before the Asian markets get going strong, then I get to catch a wink ir two before starting all over again.
But, I do get work every day at home in my jammies like Hugh Hefner. It drives my wife crazy which is why I think she is still working. She need her space, I wish I had done this 10 years earlier when technology and communications started allowing a one person hedge shop to have the same advantages as anyone else

It takes me a month or two to adjust to DST. So I’m not sleeping well these days.
I would give $100 just to see DST abolished.
