Biden blunders, again
Once again, Vice President Joe Biden is in the news for making another political blunder. While recently attending the Gridiron Club dinner in Washington, Biden disclosed to his table-mates the existence of a secret bunker under his vice presidential home, the U.S. Naval Observatory. This bunker is believed to be the (formerly) secure, undisclosed location where Vice President Dick Cheney sought shelter after the 9/11 attacks.
According to Newsweek’s Eleanor Clift, Biden “said a young naval officer giving him a tour of the residence showed him the hideaway, which is behind a massive steel door secured by an elaborate lock with a narrow connecting hallway lined with shelves filled with communications equipment.”
Of course, Biden’s office is now trying to do damage control by denying the bunker report.
“What the Vice President described in his comments was not — as some press reports have suggested — an underground facility, but rather, an upstairs workspace in the residence, which he understood was frequently used by Vice President Cheney and his aides,” said Biden’s spokesperson Elizabeth Alexander. ”That workspace was converted into an upstairs guestroom when the Bidens moved into the residence. There was no disclosure of classified information.”

VP Biden has worked hard to avoid the Swine flu but seems unaware he’s still infected with a virulent “foot-in-mouth” disease. And it seems rather resistant to treatment.

Democrats, liberals and socialists voted for Biden.

Oh, I forgot. Name calling and personal attacks are forbidden here on WM.
Please forgive me.

Joe Biden sure makes himself look foolish. For someone in his position, I would think that he would take time to really think about what he is going to say before opening his mouth. He makes Dan Quayle look more intelligent every time he speaks.

This is overblown.
The existence of a bunker, built since 9-11 under One Observatory Circle is public information. I knew about it last year. It was mentioned in a documentary about the VP Residence. I remember talking to my children about it as I quizzed them on where the VP lives, and speculating that that is The undisclosed location.
Nevertheless, Biden should NOT have talked about it under any circumstances.
Also, I’m sure there are other locations. That’s just one.
There is no relevant story here.

Peter L., Dan Quayle was actually very intelligent. He just sometimes used the wrong word.
Who hired this Biden guy anyway?!

Slow Joe should take his show on the road . . . oh yeah, I forgot, that’s where Obama has him.
Actually, I look forward to hearing about Joe. He’s the only comic relief we get from the disaster presently infesting our government.

Oh come on. We are not idiots.
Why do they always have to lie? Sorry, now it is a story.

Maybe I had to get the story before Biden’s office’s statement to get why this was a gaffe, but it seems like the “media” just ran with it and made the story into something it totally isn’t. More to the point, we all already knew that they’re are shelters below federal building like those. So it seems likely that observers drew conclusion that weren’t there in Biden’s comments. There is one below the capital building too, even if no one talks about it. But I’m not sure why it would be a gaffe it they did.

Tempest in a teapot. If I had thought about such a thing for even a minute before reading this, I’d have assumed there was a bunker or panic room type set-up at the VP’s residence. News-FLASH!! I’ll bet there’re bunkers under the White House, the Capitol and so on! Seems like a no-brainer.
This passes for news?

The only reason for scoring a Biden gaffe on this one would be if he was in violation of some national security statute by disclosing the existence of the (scarcely secret) bunker.
Got to agree with Amphipolis, though, that his spokesperson’s comment is asinine. (In my best Seth Myers voice: “So when he yakked about an ‘underground bunker,’ he was actually referring to ‘an upstairs workspace.’ Really? That’s what you’re going with? Really?)
Credit his silly staff for transforming an unstory into a story.

I wonder if it is as cool as the secret bunker underneath Kinch’s bunkbed on Hogan’s Heroes?

And these defenders of Biden called Bush stupid?
Report comment to moderator
NJ Lawywer, Republicans are always stupid, and Democrats are always smart. Quayle in his autobiography made that point brilliantly, including showing how far the Republicans’ actual academic experience, and real-world wisdom, actually outshone the “brilliant” Democrats. Ever since I read his book, I’ve noticed how consistent it is that the media presents conservatives as stupid and liberals as brilliant.

Repeat after Biden’s office statement:
“There was no disclosure of classified information.”
“There was no disclosure of classified information.”
“There was no disclosure of classified information.”
“There was no disclosure of classified information.”

The president’s bedroom in the White House is a secret elevator car capable of a 15-story free fall to a bunker that extends beneath the Potomac River. Oops! I didn’t mean to disclose that. Nobody could have imagined, and now I’ve spoiled the whole contingency.
Few people know, but there’s an abandoned mine shaft under Camp David that now . . . golly, there I go again, and I promised not to tell!
Someone, please block my World Mag account before I say that the middle of the Pentagon is the world’s largest hovercraft which . . .

Is he possibly the stupidest VP in the history of America? I think BO should put him in charge of running (in) the Special Olympics.

CherylD, Quayle’s book on the family was also good. We don’t hear any bad news reports about his family.

And people were worried about Sarah Palin being a heartbeat away.

No, xion, that would be George W. Bush. Ha ha ha!!
The Special Olympics is a great idea! Once church goers discover that Biden has Down Syndrome, he will be as beloved as Palin!

What we have here is an unsourced anecdote that is at least third-hand(Biden (allegedly) told his table-mates something that someone unknown then told Eleanor Clift .. with possibly even more steps in between. If you saw an article making an accusation of similar import against a Republican with equally weak sourcing, you’d all be screaming about the lying, liberal media.
And you wonder why conservative media complaints are not taken seriously. It’s entirely possible that the spokesman’s statement is completely accurate. It’s entirely possible that in the game of telephone it took to get the account from Biden to Clift, key details got confused, omitted or the story embellished.
But you’re all so eager to believe anything bad about a Democrat that you give your critical thinking faculties the day off and just believe it. I commented on this phenomenon in a recent WV, and here is a perfect example in living color.
Now here’s the kicker: The story has already been shown to be false.
In March, Biden attended the Gridiron dinner (an annual off-the-record media schmoozefest) and made small talk with club President Dick Cooper of the Tribune Co. At one point, Biden casually mentioned a secure room in his new home, previously used by Cheney and his aides. Per tradition, Cooper recapped the evening for the club newsletter, which was sent out this month.
Last week, Newsweek’s Eleanor Clift read Cooper’s summary and posted her juicier version on the magazine’s blog.
The article goes on to note that Cheney used a Cold War-era bunker in Pennsylvania — not a chamber directly under the residence — as his secure location. That’s been reported and known, though not the specific site, for several years.
But I am sure you good, moral Christians will prefer to believe the juicy lie than the truth.
