Latest on Letterman
Last night, David Letterman finally got around to sincerely apologizing for the “coarse” and “bad” joke he made last week about Sarah Palin’s daughter: “I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault that it was misunderstood.”
This morning, Palin accepted his apology:
“[I]t’s accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who ‘joke’ about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve.
“Letterman certainly has the right to ‘joke’ about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction.”

As well he should.
However, while Sarah Palin is not a “lightweight,” she is no more than a middleweight, and not the best the Republicans could have come up with as a Vice Presidential candidate.
It’s fairly safe to conclude anyone the conservative Christians at worldmagblog endorse is not the best the Republican party can do. Amazing how quickly Republicans have declined. However, the Democrats are very good at racing to the bottom, so their day int he barrel will come again.
We are all fallen.

Mickey: You say this is what Letterman said “last night,” but this clip is of what he said several days ago. In the course of the clip, he says:
We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter, the 18-year-old girl, who is — her name is Bristol, that’s right, and so, then, now they’re upset with me.
And:
These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl. I mean, look at my record. It has never happened. I don’t think it’s funny. I would never think it was funny. I wouldn’t put it in a joke.
Here is a Fox News story from June 11 quoting him saying exactly that.
The Palins may have finally decided to accept the apology, but Letterman has not “finally decided” to make it; he said this a week ago.

Oops. You’re right, Steve. Wrong clip. Thanks for pointing it out. Correct one up now.

It’s not accurate to say that Sarah accepted Letterman’s apology. She accepted a cessation of hostilities, and she accepted her particular reformulation of Letterman’s apology. Letterman apologized for telling a joke that could be misunderstood. The apology Sarah boasts of accepting is a hypothetical apology for the joke that Letterman didn’t tell and that she churlishly insists upon misunderstanding, even after being informed otherwise.
The fact is, Palin is insincere. Here’s why. If she really believed that Letterman told a joke about the “sexual exploitation of girls,” as she characterizes it, Palin could not accept the apology Letterman actually made. Letterman did not apologize for telling such a joke, he apologized for telling a joke that did not stop itself from being misinterpreted by Palin. By pretending to accept a fictive apology, Palin admits that it wasn’t really needed.
Curiously, nobody wants to say what Letterman’s joke was really about: Palin’s negligent guardianship of the young, and Bristol’s stupid choices as a young adult.
Report comment to moderator
Mickey: Ah, good. And yes, that’s a good apology, if belated.
Report comment to moderator
That’s not an apology; it’s a self-centered attempt to blame her for not getting it. An apology contains the words “I’m sorry.”
Report comment to moderator
Letterman apologizes for making a joke that was in his words “coarse,” and which was poorly constructed and prone to being misunderstood. He pleads good intentions, saying several times that he didn’t know Willow was at the game, and so there’s a hint of an “I’m sorry you were offended” sort of unapologetic apology. Yet in the end, he mans up enough to take responsibility for his comedy, saying he’s sorry he did it.
Good enough. Move on.
Report comment to moderator
The words, “I feel that I need to . . apologize . . it’s my fault,” constitute an apology, though not an apology for causing harm. In this instance, there was no harm. There was a joke.
The harm was Palin’s negligent guardianship. She’s supposed to be a conservative who accepts responsibility for her failings instead of blaming men.

“It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault that it was misunderstood.”
David Letterman apoligized for a mistake he thinks we made–we allegedly “misunderstood” him. Note the passive voice. That’s ridiculous and offensive. We understood him perfectly and he knows it. He was not “misunderstood.”
Also, Letterman’s silly intent vs. perception dichotomy was nonsensical and self-serving. Again, he is implying that we are to blame for misperceiving his wonderful and innocent intentions. I don’t buy it. I am not convinced his intentions were good at all. And we perceived him all too well.

“The apology Sarah boasts of accepting is a hypothetical apology for the joke that Letterman didn’t tell and that she churlishly insists upon misunderstanding, even after being informed otherwise….that did not stop itself from being misinterpreted by Palin.”
Actually the joke lent itself more readily to Sarah Palin’s interpretation than Letterman’s professed intention. The circumstances surrounding the situation made the joke’s reference to Willow explicit in the joke Letterman did tell, even if Letterman had the circumstances wrong and he had another target in mind. That is what Letterman himself finally expressed in his apology. The fact is Scroop is insincere in pretending otherwise.

I hope that Letterman keeps telling jokes that are coarse, poorly constructed, and prone to being misunderstood.
Report comment to moderator
Well, she had the good grace to accept the apology, and from what I heard on the news this morning, he sounded reasonably contrite.
Let’s hope, however, that he’ll wise up. He didn’t fact check, and he was wrong about what’s funny. I give Palin credit for sticking to her guns — and quite frankly, I think that’s what irritates the left the most about her.
Report comment to moderator
“Letterman apologized for telling a joke that could be misunderstood.”
Exactly. He didn’t apologize for making an extremely crude and insensitive joke about Bristol, (or even less, Willow).
It doesn’t really matter who the butt of the joke was, it was still wrong, and he should have apologized for making it at all.
And Scroop… You’re just wrong. Your moral sensibilities are quite seared anyway. Aren’t you the one who said sluts should be celebrated? Why should we listen to you?
To blame the choices of one’s offspring on a parent is stupid. Do you have no children of your own? Do you not understand that they make their own moral choices despite what the parent would have them do? One might be the best parent in the world, but that doesn’t stop children from being fallen.
Report comment to moderator
The circumstances surrounding the situation made the joke’s reference to Willow explicit in the joke Letterman did tell, even if Letterman had the circumstances wrong and he had another target in mind. That is what Letterman himself finally expressed in his apology.
That depends on which circumstances, KEN. The circumstance of Bristol’s history with athletes, graduation, and a recent cover of People’s Magazine are also relevant, I think. You are correct that Willow was present, but incorrect to say that I’ve pretended otherwise. I’ve argued, rightly, that Willow’s connection to Letterman’s joke could not be swiftly apprehended. I’ve also argued that Palin’s insistence about Willow is an effort to misdirect attention away from her failure as a family values mother.
Report comment to moderator
Scroopy, Willow was the one with her parents at the baseball game. Letterman should have fact checked if his intent was to go after Bristol — not that he should have said what he said about her either. That’s the part you dont’ seem to comprehend. Like Letterman, you think you can say anything you want about women and it’s all right. And his slutty stewardess comment was directed at Palin herself and totally, 100% out of line.
We’ll see in the future if Mr. Letterman has learned anything. I guess we’ll see the same thing about you, too.

Rush is correct.
They are terribly afraid of Palin.
Random, while conceding that she was not a “lightweight” still calls her a “middleweight”.
So, they have a junior senator who accomplished nothing before he was elected and created chaos after election. This, while blaming everything on “the previous administration” and “I inherited….”
As a humerous comment before the election, I said, “I am more qualified to be president than Obama.” We had some fun with my presidential bid, but no one has shown that my claim wasn’t true.

CHAS — Liberals are afraid of any conservative with enormous popular appeal and charisma, but will only start to fear Palin if she stops “yammering,” as Peggy Noonan characterizes her, and educates herself about issues of substance and trains her mind to deal with them instead of just playing a celebrity game with the media. If she can re-invent her self she will be an atomic bomb, if she’ll still be a bombshell, but she’ll continue to bomb.

I believe this is the point — if not earlier — where Christians are to remember 1 Corinthians 13, about how “love keeps no record of wrongs suffered,” and show some grace.
He acknowledged the situation. He defended his intention, but acknowledged fault for choosing to tell a joke that could be so readily misunderstood, DID NOT blame people for misunderstanding it, and did apologize.
Whether you believe him or not, isn’t this where something about loving one’s enemies and praying for them comes into effect?
Or is it Christlike to continue to grumble and gripe and disparage?

I have no doubt given the fact that Lynn is spending time with her that the suggestion that she prepare more for when the lions come to chew her up will be advanced. For all we know, she’ll even be shown this thread.

After the shooting of Dr. Tiller, many on the left are taking the next step and arriving at a scary and dangerous consensus on alleged “hate speech.”

OK, Gun. What’s so freakin’ funny about baby daddy, the only character who wasn’t surprised that Bristol got pregnant?
Report comment to moderator
Sarah Palin probably did accept the apology to just get the whole thing behind everyone. Letterman obviously doesn’t get it, so what is the point of going on about it?
I heard an interesting discussion of the whole thing that shows the liberal mind set. One woman kept insisting that the whole thing was ok because Bristol got pregnant (I won’t use the offensive, disgusting term she used) and also the governor’s fault because she didn’t teach her daughter safe sex. Interesting, safe sex is ok, but having a baby makes one a prostitute and therefore someone who can be ridiculed. Like Scroop says: Not graduated, having a baby out of wedlock equals a prostitute.
Sleeping around with every Tom, Dick and Harry is ok as long as one is a liberal and practices safe sex. And of course, men can do whatever they want and they are considered moral anyway. Didn’t Letterman have a baby out of wedlock, so to speak? Is the mother of his child up for ridicule too? Can she not be trusted around men, Scroop? How disgusting!

“Like Scroop says: Not graduated, having a baby out of wedlock equals a prostitute.”
Or just as bad, “sluts should be celebrated”.

KBELLS – You are correct that we see this variety of racism at the State and local levels but not in national Republican politics.
(At the national level, racism shows its fawning face as Michael Steele, Clarence Thomas, and the former congressman from Oklahoma who was perpetually at the side of Newt Gingrich. The most famous victim of this racism was Bush domestic policy advisor Claude Allen, who had a title with no authority.)
But don’t underestimate grass-roots bigotry, KBELLS. That’s what fueled the populist fervor of Nixon and Reagan’s Southern politics.

Honestly, it is hard to tell if many of those links are racist RPN. Some may be. However, the joke you quoted in #46 was commentary on Obama’s racism. Obama has made it clear that he is a racist. He called working class whites bitter xenophobes clinging to guns and religion. He lauded praise on his pastor of 20 years who spews black liberation theology.
So the aspirin joke was not racist in itself. It was commentary on the most racist president in American history.

Which is bad for Republicans, who are chained to the clear racism in the borderer lands. “Should we talk about his son?” one protester asked Green. “I believe his son was born out of wedlock. I believe there’s a term for that.”
“Is someone making jokes about his child?” asked another. “Especially, you know, when he had a daughter out of wedlock himself” (he doesn’t; 5-year-old Harry is his only child).
“How dare he?” asked yet a third, the most offensive of all. “When he has a bastard son, and a slut for a wife” (Letterman’s wife Lasko has kept a notoriously low profile).
It should be noted that Sarah Palin’s teenage daughter Bristol gave birth to baby Tripp (out-of-wedlock) in December and broke up with the baby’s father, Levi Johnston, in March.
Other conservative talking points thrown around at the rally included, “Close the borders!” and “I only watch Fox News,” as well as the general sentiment that Jay Leno is a better host than Letterman.

Which is my party? I am an independent. My philosophy is that power corrupts and therefore you don’t want to concentrate it. The government that governs least governs best. Republican politicians accomplish very little. I view that as a good thing. But that is hardly offering allegiance.
My political philosophy is essentially classical liberalism, namely self reliance, individualism, limit powers of government, civil rights, separation of church and state, etc.
I view modern liberalism as an inverted world where up is down and right is wrong. Liberals are well intentioned but always accomplish precisely the opposite of what they want. I am all for energy independence but all Obama’s plan does is build a few windmills while he bows and kisses Saudi princes. I am against racism, but liberals make racism law. I am for helping the weak and helpless, but liberals believe it is their right to pull off their arms and legs. And so on … Having a consistent opinion on this isn’t pledging allegiance to any party.
You on the other hand have never and will never say anything other than the Democratic party line. And you have never and will never say anything nice about a Republican.
