Senate proceeds with judge impeachment
U.S. District Judge Samuel B. Kent, who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two staffers at the Houston Federal Courthouse and obstruction of justice, was impeached by a House resolution on Friday and has now been summoned to defend himself before the Senate in future trial proceedings.
House members personally delivered the impeachment case to the Senate on Wednesday morning and urged swift action. The senators gathered in force and wore solemn faces as they heard the charges against Judge Kent, took a special oath to become jurors in the case, and nominated a bipartisan committee to oversee the investigation.
After a unanimous voice vote to confirm the committee, the senators lined up to sign an official attendance book to record their presence at the time the oath was administered.
The full gathering of the Senate is rare, and it occurred during one of the busiest weeks of a busy summer session, but Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., said it was imperative that Judge Kent is removed quickly and denied his $477 per day salary:
[The Senate] should take action immediately to ensure justice is truly served and that Judge Kent, who has dishonored the robe, can no longer serve on a judicial bench.”
The Senate is the only body that can remove federal judges.

Sensenbrenner is right. Get rid of him. (It’ll make the other judges on his court happy, too.)

The content of multistate professional responsibility needs to be revised and this time include a section covering harassment of female staffers.
This case was covered pretty well in “Texas Lawyer” and blog posters from a few weeks ago examined it thoroughly, glad to see the newsworthiness has reached Jacob. Many of course asked the woman plaintiff “If it was so intolerable why didnt you just quit?” To which I say how would that change the Clintonesque conduct of this judge? It would only lead to another victim. And I think we can assume that the optempo at a judge’s office is way way slower and pay and bennies much higher than what you typically find for paralegals at the colossal for-profit law firms(which is where the plaintiff in this case came from).
But I say disbar him at once, and make it permanent.

Yes disbar him, but why stop there? If the guy has pled guilty to sexual assault, there ought to be a room waiting for him in the nearest federal prison.

The judiciary committee should subpoena the judge to testify at a hearing about the psychology of Texas judges who invoke the name of Roy Bean in their written opinions just to act like jerks.
Judge Kent will be punished for his crimes (though not as severely as a Negro). The Texas bench — in Texas and wherever else Republicans have re-shaped justice — need to be punished for the crime of writing opinions that abuse the ideal of justice. Read some of the excerpts from Judge Kent’s opinions at notes #6-9 at the bottom of his Wiki article:

Criminal justice reform is a painful and difficult challenge. I half-feared that Republicans would step up to the plate and earn my reluctant admiration and gratitude, but they are nothing more than a hangin’ party when it comes to law and order. The Democrats have taken up the burden of this task.
About 10 years ago I was in a tiny Louisiana courtroom to protest a phony speeding ticket. Before my case came up, the court sentenced a middle-aged black man to 43 years in prison for distributing drugs. Sentencing was a half-hour vaudeville routine. The man stood shackled as the judge and the prosecutor acted out a Roy Bean skit which invoked Christmas greetings, Santa, and a “who’s on first” dialogue about the inventory of charges and the amount of time for each. Whatever the justice of the prison term, a human being was being lost to society for the remainder of his life. It wasn’t funny.

First, sin is an equal opportunity problem for both Democrats and Republicans.
Second, who believes “the Constitution is living, breathing” entity?
“It wasn’t funny.”
Neither are you.

They equally seize the opportunity to sin, but they usually prefer their own sins. Subject to this addenda, Bob, I agree to the max.

“there ought to be a room waiting for him in the nearest federal prison.”
OK, then why shouldn’t WJ Clinton be his roommate?

Slick Willy never pled guilty!
He committed his crimes on federal property. Federal law applies, and I doubt his trial judge is interested in giving him a free ride. And even if he appeals his sentence, I don’t see him going anywhere but a federal prison.
The federal system is very different from the state system, though some here don’t want to admit that.

Texas does seem to have more problems with justice than most states. Scary place.

Off topic a bit, but a judge making only $477 a day?? My lawyer charges nearly that per hour.

On May 11, 2009, Judge Kent was sentenced to 33 months in prison in a sex abuse case for lying to investigators about sexually abusing two female employees. Dick DeGuerin, Kent’s attorney, said the judge was retiring from the bench because of a disability—which would allow him to keep receiving his $169,300-a-year salary. Retired federal judges collect their full salaries for the remainder of their lives; judges who resign get nothing
