Pro-life Dems: No public support for abortion
From the Brody File today — 19 pro-life Democrats have sent a letter to Nancy Pelosi saying they will not support a public option if the government covers abortion or abortion-related services.
They wrote Pelosi:
We believe in a culture that supports and respects the right to life and is dedicated to the protection and preservation of families. Therefore, we cannot support any health care reform proposal unless it explicitly excludes abortion from the scope of any government-defined or subsidized health insurance plan. We believe that a government-defined or subsidized health insurance plan, should not be used to fund abortion.
Brody says the strong message from pro-life Democrats will “torpedo any chance of abortion services being included in the final bill.” He also calls Obama out:
If the President really wanted to extend an olive branch to pro-life conservatives regarding his common ground approach to abortion, he could come out and tell Congress not to include abortion coverage in the government plan. Think he’ll do that? Umm….too bold…too risky…he won’t alienate his pro-choice base. The upside isn’t big enough.

I am glad my Representative is on the list and will write and thank him for it.

They’ll all back down and vote as Speaker Nancy tells them. All of them without fail.

“the strong message from pro-life Democrats will ‘torpedo any chance of abortion services being included in the final bill.’”
That’s just not true. Pelosi can lose 19 votes and still pass a health plan easily. Moreover, if a public option doesn’t offer women full health services on par with their private insurance, than she will lose many more votes than 19. Who do you think has more sway with the House leadership?! Obama and the organized women’s movement or 19 Blue Dogs? Brody doesn’t know very much.

KRM,
I’m not so sure they will back Pelosi -

I don’t think Brody has to “know very much.” All he and the others have to do is vote their conscience. It would do Pelosi some good and quite frankly the whole country some good to see Democrats vote their conscience and not because Obama or Pelosi tell them to vote as they want them to vote. Their vote shouldn’t be for sale.

It’s about time democrats stood up for the lives of little unborn children. Nancy Pelosi and NOW want to take health care by storm and subsidize child killing on the backs of American taxpayers. May this be the beginning of a stand for decency by a party that has been mired in the pitiful rhetoric of those who euphamistically call abortion reproductive rights. The American people must not be made to pay for the despicable practices of those who have placed their children’s rights as subservient to their own.

19 votes against the plan are 19 votes I can applaud. I’ll take as many as we can get to stop the takeover of 1/6 of the economy, especially since the Obama Administration has already taken over 1/3 of the domestic auto industry, and a large portion of the financial institutions.
Report comment to moderator
Sorry, but holding health care for scores of millions of Americans and 1/6 of our economy hostage to this issue is immoral.
This position, if successful will likely kill more children and adults than would any abortions it actually prevents.

Arcadia, you are obviously not aware of the numbers.

Pro life democrats = lastest additions to Obama’s hitlists.
Reps. Dan Boren (D-OK); Bart Stupak (D-MI); Colin Peterson (D-MN); Tim Holden (D-PA); Travis Childers (D-MS); Lincoln Davis (D-TN); Heath Shuler (D-NC) Solomon Ortiz (D-TX); Mike McIntyre (D-NC); Jerry Costello (D-IL); Gene Taylor (D-MS); James Oberstar (D-MN); Bobby Bright (D-AL); Steve Driehaus (D-OH); Marcy Kaptur (D-OH); Charlie Melancon (D-LA); John Murtha (D-PA); Paul Kanjorski (D-PA); and Kathleen Dahlkemper (D-PA). If you want you should email all of them and tell them you support their pro life stand.

MFW: “Pro-lifers” should not be talking about “hitlists” these days. Way too close to the truth. Hey, what’s your real name, home address and congregation? Inquiring minds want to know.
Got any kind of estimate on how many abortions would actually be PREVENTED by this measure? I submit very, very few. Most aren’t especially complicated or expensive, and funding from private sources is generally available.
On the other hand, if health care reform doesn’t pass, lots of people will continue to die for the lack of it.

Arcadia,
I doubt it.

If that’s so, then they should accommodate their pro-life fellow travelers and get this oh-so-vital legislation passed.

#8 – talk about the pot calling the kettle black – sheesh!
Obviously you wouldn’t know “immoral” if it stood right in front of you. Your position is abhorent to any decent sensibilities.

Studies uniformly associate the highest abortion rates with the fewest legal restrictions. Evidently many are prevented.
On the other hand, if health care reform doesn’t pass, lots of people will continue to die for the lack of it.”
So only the magic formula for health care reform advocated by the President and Congress (whatever is finally offered) will save lives. Any other option, any other choices, will result in needless deaths. How could any sane person stand in the way of such grand and heroic millenial bliss?
Who dies for the lack of health care today in America? Emergency Rooms are obligated to care for anyone, regardless of insurance status.

This is a case of “all politics are local.” That’s what I like about the House of Representatives. Reps are constantly in campaign mode. They have a quick 2 years before their record is up for review.
An informed electorate can keep their Reps feet to the fire. 19 votes is a bloc that will get attention, and attention is what they want.
I applaud the blue dog Dems for their stance.
