RANT: Rude people. Here it is 4th of July and the condo where I work is packed. Some people got locked out of their unit but it isn’t one the on-site management company handles. The leasing agent explained that for security purposes he could not let them in they would have to call the company they leased through. He was very professional. The man started cursing and using very foul language in front of his children, the agent asked them please to stop cursing and finally asked if he would have to call the police. The woman jumped in and said it was freedom of speech they could say anything they wanted to just like he (the agent) could “do” any man he wanted to.
Sexual orientation had nothing to do with whether or not the people could be let back into their condo. The leasing agent could lose his job if they aren’t the right people.

Yesterday my former journalism teacher was there, and it’s always so fun to see her, but when she and another of the regulars began just piling on (again) about palin, bush, et al, I found myself reacting especially strongly, jumping in to defend. I felt very agitated and I know I sounded cranky and had a “tone,” if you know what I mean. I kind of sounded like a jerk, I think.
But feel I need to apologize for getting agitated like I did. I went against all the principles I try to maintain for personal political engagement, if it comes to that (listen to others, respond calmly, don’t interrupt and don’t overstate your side, give the other side its due).
I just get so weary of hearing the same old rants about palin and bush, about how “poor, poor” Obama really inherited an impossible mess, didn’t he? (I live in an area and work in an industry where I’m a distinct minority when it comes to political viewpoints, so I hear it all a lot).
I pointed out that Obama desperately wanted the job, paid hundreds of millions of dollars to campaign for it, it’s not like he was drafted against his will. Arrrg. Besides, I said, they all leave some kind of “mess,” and Obama will leave one of his own.
(They were really getting annoyed with me at this point and I suspect I was close to being voted off the bench, if not all the way out of the dog park! What’s ironic is I did so well during the campaign out there, whenever these topics came up I would stay out of them or participate calmly; now that it’s all over, I go and lose it!)

Donna, I was going to ask how Cowboy handled it.
In SS today, a guy said he thought of me when he watched the Capital fireworks. I confessed to him that I lived there 38 years and never saw the fireworks on the mall. I just hate to get into crowds that size. I knew one guy who rented a hotel room facing the mall to watch them.
Patriotic songs must irritate the athiests and ACLU. They all have lines about God.
“God Bless America” is a prayer. (Kate Smith wanted to make that the national anthem, BTW. I wish it had become so. There’s a thread about the National Anthem. I really don’t like it for a national anthem because it’s so unsingable. I think it goes 1.5 octaves.)
“My Country ‘Tis of Thee”, (To the tune of the UK national anthem) has “Great God out King” at the end.
Even “The Star Spangled Banner” has “And this be our motto, In God is Our Trust”.
Can’t get away from it.

The Circular Republican Firing Squad:
Democrats left it to Republican and conservative voices to assess what Friday’s unexpected announcement by Palin means for her and a possible run for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination. For example, Vice President Joe Biden called it a personal decision, offering no analysis of why she did it.
By contrast, those on the political right acknowledged that they didn’t know what to make of it.
Karl Rove, the “architect” of George W. Bush’s successful presidential campaigns, said the resignation left many of Palin’s fellow Republicans “a little perplexed.”
“It’s a risky strategy,” Rove told “Fox News Sunday.”
“Astounding,” was the pronouncement by Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, and conservative columnist George Will said Palin was declaring herself a quitter.
“The one that rings most hollow is, she doesn’t want to put Alaska through the terror of [her] being a lame-duck governor,” Will said. “If she is just weary of it, one can understand that. Still, she made a contract with [voters] to serve out her term. And she said, in her own words, she now is a quitter.”
“The challenge that she’s going to have is that there will be people who will say, ‘Look, if they chased you out of this, it won’t get any easier at other levels,’ ” Mike Huckabee said.”

I am actually proud of you for standing up at the dog park. ( And when it comes to discussing messes Obama makes you have plenty of materials around to show them. )
I am often in areas where I am surrounded by ‘liberal thinking people’. I have a couple of sets of rules of engagement. I know first off that I am dealing with someone who feels rather than thinks. They are also very lopsided in their verbiage. And they like to not be challenged by actually having to think.
My first rule is to not let them be scarred for life. They choose to be liberal because they are using it as a crutch. Something in their history, whether it be drug use, or sexual promiscuity, or just the desire to be promiscuous, or some such (bad divorce, STDs, felony convictions, there is a long list to choose from) has made them cling to the false hope of liberalism. It is worse than being addicted to cigarettes. Like being addicted to cigarettes it can be cured. The cure is not always confrontation because the liberal addict at times wants to be beaten. It is a self flagellation for being liberal. A masochism, both strange and at times scary. I know that my job is to somehow show them the love of Christ. That is the only true long lasting cure.
My second rule as always is to pray for God to give me the right words. I am considered a very good orator. I have given speeches in many parts of the world. But all of the eloquence in the world is for nought if a soul is lost. So I ask for the greatest orator to guide me. And that trust is not always easy. I have yet to meet a liberal who could out debate me. Certainly I have many who have tried and who have passionately ‘ wanted to win a point. I have seen through their ‘logic’ easily. But sometimes I have been persuaded by the quiet inner voice not to ‘go for the kill’. At times like that I pray, “Not my will, but thine be done.”
The third rule is to realize that they a) don’t have all of their facts; b) have twisted facts to suit their addiction; c) don’t really mean what they are saying; and/or d) don’t really know what they are saying. We often say a liberal is in denial. It is so obvious that they are. But sometimes it is not just denial it is addiction. To admit they are wrong about something would be a tremendous conviction of their soul. Something that many people have a hard time experiencing. So the task before us is not easy.
The fourth rule is to love them anyway. No matter how stringent the argument becomes , no matter how many blows have been landed, no matter the depths of insanity or depravity to which the demons of liberalism drive your opponent , realize your opponent is God’s child. We want to exorcise liberalism, not separate the person from Christ. (We can’t separate but we can make it difficult for them to see Christ.)
The fifth rule is that Love conquers all. We enter into the engagement knowing that the battle is already won. Liberalism has been shown time and time and time again to be stupidity, ignorance , and arrogance. Its fallacious arguments have been shown to be sophistry and intellectual dishonesty. But despite all the good arguments liberalism is prevalent as the proverbial bad penny. What you can do is to show that you care for the person and that the ideology is separate from the person. John may be a liberal….but he doesn’t have to be.. Mr Smith might be full of himself…. he needs Christ.
The sixth rule is to realize the Divine Comedy. Some liberals will not understand what you say. Some are not able to recognize the eloquence of your logic. But regardless we can leave them with a smile. Perhaps a good laugh even. And our good words will have better traction.
And if you can show them the love of Christ. You have won.

I actually do understand a bit of what Sarah Palin was saying in her resignation speech. My husband and I were involved in a church struggle for a couple of years. After awhile, it became apparent that we had become the issue instead of the true issues that were the problem. We left at that point, since no one was focusing on what was important. We could no longer help make the changes that needed to be made and were becoming a hindrance.
If Sarah Palin believed she was costing the Alaskans too much money because of the many lawsuits and could not give her full attention to the governorship because of all the focus on her, she was right to resign. She obviously felt the Lt. Governor could handle the job. It isn’t as if she left the next day or left no one at the helm.
Not that it matters to some people. She is right: those that hate you will hate you no matter what you do.

Forgive yourself. We can all get ’snarky’ at times. I usually turn snarkiness into humour. (In fact I change a lot of things into humour.) If the friends at the dog park can’t find a way to get over it then perhaps you need to pray for them. I have taken dogs to dog parks that are populated with many liberals. The dogs seem to play along with each other just fine.
As for political debate, there are a few basic principles that form the best basis for any discussion. Whether that discussion is about issues political, moral, ethical, or so on. You need not know all the intimate details of every issue. (If your ‘opponent’ tries to make you feel small, shame on them.) Apply gentle logic. Ask a few Socratic questions and liberals usually find themselves twisting in the wind.
Read my posts. Understand that even the snarkiest of them is filled with love. Save them to your hard drive. Reread them.
#55 above is particularly apt.

Yes, Hillary whined — about herself. Palin hasn’t done that. She’s commented on the deplorable way her children have been treated. There is nothing you can say to justify mocking a Downs Syndrome baby or any child for that matter, but I suppose the liberals here figure the kid will never figure it out. I will believe liberals are decent people only when as a group they stop doing these things and tell the MSM that reporting such conduct is despicable.
There was a lot to work with where Chelsea was concerned, but no one went all out trying to destroy a gangly teenager with braces. When the Democratic leadership speaks out against the deplorable treatment of Palin’s children, I will believe that they are decent people. They are not. Biden didn’t criticize Palin, but he didn’t put a stop to this sort of thing either. Until they come out as a group and put a stop to this sort of thing and “play nice” I will continue to be appalled by their so-called “leadership.”

Thanks Monty — but I really did feel my tone was out of line, so I sent off an email apology today to my former journalism teacher, the primary person I skirmished with. The discussion was rather superficial, a personality kind of thing about Palin and Bush, so unfortunately there weren’t a lot of deep issues being considered. Silly really. And not worth the hard feelings that might linger if it’s not addressed.
Report comment to moderator
I guess I felt that my tone was disrespectful and that bothered me. I think as Christians we should always strive to be gracious and respectful of the other person, regardless of our disagreements. And on that front I failed in this case. I confessed it to the Lord during our time of corporate, silent confession this morning in church and felt strongly about going to her with my offense as well.
As for Palin, one thing that truly stumps me is why the obsession with her on the left? I hear it at work as well, there’s just this odd (to me) fascination and hatred of her. I can’t really figure that one out.
I could almost see it during the campaign because she did bring a surge of excitement for McCain and was probably seen as a genuine political threat. But now that the Democrats have the presidency AND both houses of Congress – I mean, it’s ALL theirs — I guess I’m just surprised that they’d be spending any time noticing her much at all. What’s up with that? Why the inability to move on?

I respect what you did in apologizing to your friends. You know better what was in your heart, and I’m sure they will understand. They may even apologize back, or say it’s not a big deal. I learned during the Bush years that friendships are more important than politics, but that doesn’t rule out the occasional jab between friends. I’ve had many heated discussions with misguided Bush supporting friends (if they were on this blog I would call them ‘Bushies’ — yes, that bad), and in the end we just decided to not talk politics. They eventually came around to see I had valid points and we remain good friends today. I wish the same for you.

Donna,
From what you have been saying it sounds like you were experiencing outrage. And since you are usually a very reserved person in these types of encounters you felt uncomfortable telling them what you told them. I can appreciate both the outrage and the uncomfortableness.
Emotions ,per se, are not bad. They are truly neither evil nor good. You need not fear your own emotions. They are a part of us. To be controlled at times. To be given more reign at others. Of all the emotions considered ‘negative’ outrage is the best for motivation. When we know that something is bad, something is wrong we get outraged. It belongs to us to fix whatever is wrong. We need a repertoire of responses. Then we need to ask God to help us pick from that repertoire. (Exodus 7:2)(Romans 8:28)
Your friends may actually like you better that you showed some back bone. They may respect you more knowing they can’t just get you to accept their premise without challenge. You are no longer their door mat.
If a friend of mine cannot take me disagreeing with them then our friendship is diminished. That I can challenge them is a sign of respect. Me for them. Them for me. Self respect both ways. And mutual respect for our relationship. Two minds are not better than one if one mind can’t disagree.
The uncomfortableness comes from the experience because it is counter to what you are used to. To what you expect. It is akin to tribulation.. a much milder form of it. In our current times more than any other in the history of our country we will all be feeling tribulation. Expect to be more and more uncomfortable whether you confront evil or not. (2 Chronicles 32:7)

Donna,
Some people were taught manners and reasons for manners when they were young. Some were never taught. Some feel that now that they are ‘adult’ they can be rude as adults. Others have had numerous excuses for being less than humane. There are countless other frailties that come into play. I lump them all together for convenience by seeing that liberalism is often akin to drug addiction. Similar motivations, same results.
In general I meet them with graciousness but with respect for the truth. I can love them and still see them as addicts. They can only understand things at a certain level. Then they try to rend you. The trick is to know before hand at what level they might try to rend you. They are often out to rend someone. (Matthew 7:6)

RPN, I am very honest with you. Your ‘missing things’ and then asking others to fill you in would be fine if you were polite about it. But your verbiage has been rude and I feel no need to educate you.
Your lack of attention is no indication that I need to baby you along. You should be better than that. Expect better of yourself. I certainly expect better from a ‘grown up’.
