Prayers for Steve McNair and for the family of the young gal who was found dead by Steve’s corpse. The one I feel saddest for is his wife who has to now confront the fact that he was cheating on her and is now deceased. The mixed emotions that funeral will generate!
He may have been disloyal to his wife and sons but the biogs I read depicted a former Tenn Titan player who contributed much to various charities.

I see the popularity of this post is 1%. The popularity of the ‘Star Spangled Banner” post Saturday was 3% and it had 15 posts. The popularity of “Rants & Raves” was also 3% and it had 85 posts.
Suspect something?
And I’m not going to try to guess the quote.

JFK’s Sec Def dead at 93. Robert S. McNamara… in later years I understand he was apologetic and contrite about his roll in blundering the USA into the Viet war.

Shreveport Bossier this past weekend. Fireworks over the Red River and a great time at the children’s science museum “Sci-Port”. Drove over to the old municipal auditorium. Its where Elvis made his debut on the old “Louisiana Hayride” show. Such a small concert venue compared to where shows are done now.
Great statue of Elvis there with statue of Shreveport native son JAMES BURTON there right by the king’s.

Sawgunner (1): Don’t you find it interesting that all the articles talk about what a great football player and community man McNair was, yet none of them question why he was involved with a 20-yr-old woman? Isn’t this the Michael Jackson treatment?

Tychicus, I dont know how old you are to recall this so forgive me for any presumption. I still recall the circumstances surrounding the death of former NY Gov (and would-be Prez candidate) Nelson Rockefeller. He was with a gal named Megan Marshak. She kept very hush hushed about exactly what the Gov was doing at the time of his death. He died of a heart attack. She and her girlfriend then moved the Gov’s body from her bedroom to another part of her apt.
With McNair I dont suspect a cuckolded wife. Why kill a man from whom she’d be able to get sooo much alimony or child support? I more think it was the fall-out from failure to promptly pay a drug courier. Firing off multiple rounds when anyone hearing it might’ve shrugged it off as fireworks tells me planning went into this one. (How many gun shots do you hear before you phone police?)
I wonder how many pro athlete’s will now rush out to hire body guards or (in the state’s which allow it) obtain a concealed carry pistol permit?

Oh yes, that British (older) meaning of “want”. In the quote the first time it seems to mean “desire”, the second use means “need” of thankfulness. Love the play on the two meanings. As to the source, who knows? But it does apply to us today. How many of us Americans are thankful for all we have while complaining about all we do not have, but think we need?

Kim #8,
We didnt get to go inside the old Municipal Auditorium but I’m sure they have something in it about Johnny Horton. Johnny died in a car wreck. He was on the way to speak to producers of “Rawhide” to be one of the characters on the program.

I still have an old Johnny Horton 45 rpm. That brings back memories.
Is the book deal for Lynn with Sarah Palin still on?

The only thing I have by Johnny Horton is “North to Alaska”.
Which reminds me, along with NJL, will we still get autographed copies? I presume Sarah will comment on this in the book.
Carl Rove and others say it’s a risky move.

10. My son acted like such a spoiled brat this weekend, I am considering making him live a “poor” week”. No TV, no air conditioning and beans and rice at every meal. I wonder if someone would consider that child abuse? I would live it with him, of course, but Daddy has said he’s not up for it.
Or I could just taking him camping.

A guy I know said he had to bivouac in the backyard for keeping a slopppy room with unmade bed.
It cured him as they say.

I heard Carl Rove said that, and he knows his stuff, but then again, he never really understood prayer, did he? Perhaps Ms. Palin has done something that he just doesn’t know what to do with yet.

Just a reminder.
The United States currently has 1,198 land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-based missiles and bombers, which together are capable of delivering 5,576 warheads, according to its most recent Start report in January. Because not all of them are “operationally deployed,” the Arms Control Association estimates that the United States currently deploys at least 2,200 strategic nuclear warheads.
Russia reported in January that it has 816 delivery vehicles capable of delivering 3,909 warheads. While the number of deployed Russian strategic warheads is not known, the Arms Control Association estimated it between 2,000 and 3,000. Both sides also have more warheads that are in storage or awaiting dismantlement and the treaty discussions do not cover thousands more tactical nuclear weapons.

Great quote!
Is it by Daniel Defoe, from Robinson Crusoe?
Here’s another one, related in theme:

Hello everyone, I have a prayer request.
I went camping this past weekend, as you know if you followed the Calvinism debate thread. I had a decently good time, just relaxing, hanging out with friends, and some biking. Still, it was a rather unfortunate weekend. Some of our group went cliff jumping at a nearby river. A girl landed wrong in the water (in a sitting position rather than straight up and down) and suffered a broken back. She is having surgery today. Thankfully she should heal and return nearly to normal condition. Pray that everything goes well.
Thanks.

Down in Corpus Christi today jury selection starts for a sad trial indeed. A number of former state employees from DMHMR (Dept of Mental Health Mental Retardation) who were entrusted with the care of retarded citizens proved themselves unworthy of that trust. They staged fight matches among the residents of the home they worked at.
The defendants alas were stupid enough to record the fight matches on cell phone cameras.
Gotta love it when defendants create the evidence used against them in a court room!!

My mom is waiting for word of her brother, Artie, 74 or 75 yrs. old. (He lives alone in a town a little over an hour from us.) A neighbor called Mom to tell her he didn’t seem to be home when the van came to pick him up for shopping. Someone is going to go into his mobile home to see if he’s in there, incapacitated.
Mom is pretty nervous. She’s been concerned about his health & memory for quite a while.
Matt Y. – I prayed for the young lady. Glad it sounds as if she’ll be okay eventually. So many young people die this time of year in swimming accidents.

Odd comparing the hopeful optimists of 60s liberalism with our current politicians. McNamara and his bosses wanted to promote and extend democratic govt in a part of the 3rd world where it really didnt stand much of a chance. Very few folks in the 60s said “Ya know, sure democracy is nice but the little Asian men just cannot adapt to it.. it doesnt match up with their culture..” and I think you could make the argument that the ones who mouthed such tripe back then were at their heart isolationists or racists.
Today Americans fight and die under the rubric of advancing democracy in the 3rd world as well. (Only Viet Nam lacked proven oil reserves). I tend to think that many of those who oppose US involvemt in Iraq/Afghanistan “nation building” projects are a bit more racist than anyone would admit.

Joel Mark, when I saw today’s quote I thought it was obscure enough I might have a chance of “winning” even this late in the day, but then saw that you beat me to it. It was indeed Defoe in Robinson Crusoe.
I wouldn’t have remembered it except that I just finished reading the book for the first time yesterday. I was impressed at how clear and strong was his explanation of the Gospel.

KBells, I have no idea if this will work with your son, but my daughter now requires her children to earn time on the computer, tv or game console. Her five year old (the only one home with her right now) has been doing amazingly well with it. The other day he told me he had his part of the house clean, but mommy better get going on her part!
She has lots of little jobs that he can do in addition to his room and bed.

Call me psychic. But here I go anyway. I saw pix from the Steve McNair case. He is a black man and the gal from her looks is most likely Arab. I’m wondering if this was what they call in the muslim world an “honor killing”. If she was a muslim and he was nominally a Christian I think that could explain the killing. The trans-religion nature of the relationship and not the trans-racial nature should be the primary focus.
But will NPD pursue an “honor killing angle”? Watch and see.

#36 Victoria, Americanized muslim kids–which is what I think this girl probably was– have embraced our post-race culture of Tiger and Barack. Race does not matter! It’s a triumph of colorblind decency that race doesnt matter for many young folks; even in that long-standing holdout- the singles dating life. But for many traditional muslims a successful wealthy black superstar athlete is firstly and lastly a black man.
Yes, this despite the success of Islam in Africa and among US-born blacks like Malcolm X.

A shame no one at WMB is following the Stanford indictmt. He is a flim flam con man of the Madoff magnitude. He was hauled in to the courthouse in a bright orange hunting jumpsuit and placed in a line of other similarly attired non-hunters.
All the Bernie Madoff pix show him strolling along in civvies. What’s up with that??!

As I recall, it wasn’t so long ago in this country (Texas is my best guess, but maybe Louisiana) that killing one’s spouse’s lover, while in flagrante delicto was defensible.
But of course, most of those folks were white, instead of “Arab looking” so it doesn’t count as savage.
Report comment to moderator
Sawgunner — Arabs can be Christian –Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, and Egypt all have significant Christian minorities.
Race hierarchy is not a western only invention or prejudice.

Sawgunner: Some of Kazemi’s relatives claim that she was expecting that McNair would soon divorce his wife. If he had somehow given her that indication, then could it be that in those last moments together he made it known that he couldn’t or wouldn’t get divorced, leading to a possible murder-suicide? That scenario sounds more likely than an honor killing.
Report comment to moderator
I’m merely saying an honor killing might be the case. It could be as #41 Tychicus suggests or it could be that it was planned to look that way. A strong argument for “breaking it off” via text mail or phone call instead of in person. (”Oh and by the way you’ll have to move out of this condo and give me the Escalade I bought for you… HEY, you put down that .45 right now!!”)
I have never heard of non-muslim Arabs following the practice of honor killings. I do know Lebanese Druze and a few Christians so I will inquire about that practice as being truly pan-Arabic and not just a muslim thing.

#39.. I believe you could say you did the act in the heat of passion (ie you walked in and caught them in the act), BUT.. unless you have a gun rack right above your bedroom door I dont know how you could avoid saying something like what you describe was anything but premeditated malice aforethought.

Did yall hear about the Florida man who had a baby in the same house as his pet python? The baby was actually his girlfriend’s 2 year old (not sure if the snake owner was the actual bioDaddy or not) Well, perhaps if he’d gotten the snake handler permit Florida requires he would have properly secured the animal.
The snake got out while the adults were asleep and did what a Python snake will do because its well a python snake.
I got to listen to the 911 call.
My 8 year old was listening near the computer at home and became quite emotional and ran upstairs. Mommy said Tess was teary for a while but then Mommy explained that Jesus took that precious child into his arms immediately.
Moral: keep the mute button handy at all times.

Actually, there are cases where the defendant got off using the heat of passion even when he killed later on — his blood was still boiling, so to speak. Heat of passion is an old common law defense, and it still works.
I read a news article that the girl bought a gun Tuesday, shot McNair 4 times, then herself. It could be as simple as her realizing that he wasn’t planning to leave his wife.
Well, Obama is a no-nothing if he sides with the likes of Chavez. The rest of the quote is outrageous.
Report comment to moderator
This one does sound more like a murder-suicide at this point.
I got curious so here’s some stuff on in flagrante.
It’s not quite as bad as the more cold-blooded “honor” killing by other family members, but the underlying philosophy is exactly the same.
At common law, a man who killed his wife and her lover after seeing them in flagrante delicto –commiting adultery–could reduce the degree of his crime to manslaughter by claiming he acted in the heat of passion. Such mitigation acknowledged the killer’s passionate response to provocative behavior holding him blameworthy while professing some sympathy with the motive of the slayer. In four states proof that the defendant saw hi wife in flagrante delicto was grounds for acquittal. In Georgia, for example, acquitting such a defendant was analogized to self-defense. Wives, the courts opined, embodied delicacy and chastity and husbands were their protectors. The doctrine came into existence in the mid-1800s and was not repealed until the late twentieth century. Though treating in flagrante delicto as a complete defense arose as a judicial construction, courts defended the rule as embodying the intent of the legislature. It demonstrated a tension between the judges’ perceptions about their duty to interpret, not make, the law, and their desire to protect female virtue and Southern values.

No, Arcadia, they are not exactly the same. Heat of passion does not extend to family members and it usually family members who do an honor killing. Honor killings are about how the relationship makes the family look to outsiders, while heat of passion is because the offended spouse witnessed the dirty deed and couldn’t control his/her reaction.

NJL: The protection of female “virtue”, which is somehow very important, not to her (she is expendable), but to her spouse or her family. Either way it is only female behavior which is sufficiently outrageous to warrant legal homicide. And that is both biblical and koranic.

I wonder why you persist in showing your complete ignorance of Christianity and Islam. Since I know you’re a King James fan, here’s one for you: Proverbs 29:11 — A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.
That is, some people talk when they should listen. Your interest in Truth is greatly exceeded by your interest in belittling. I pity you your bitterness.
