Who picks up the tab?
Yesterday’s public memorial service remembering Michael Jackson concluded without any security disturbances–thanks in part to the approximate 3,000 police officers scheduled to be on hand for the event, which was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Although Los Angeles Councilwoman Jan Perry had said the city would pay for the security efforts needed at the public memorial service, Councilman Dennis Zine argued that the public should not have to foot any of the bill since the city already faces a budget crisis and has amassed $530 million in debt. The security effort reportedly cost as much as $4 million. Instead, he suggested that AEG, the company that owns the Staples Center, should cover all security costs since the company volunteered to host it at the center.
While some individuals are questioning why the Jackson family isn’t helping to pay for the security efforts, the city has since established a website seeking donations from the public to cover the costs.

LA and the Jackson family have the same amount of money.
However, the Jackson family stands to make a lot out of this.
As someone said, when hearing of Elvis’ death, “Good career move.”

The people have a right to assemble and the government has a duty to protect them. There’s no question that the city should pay. They should just be happy nothing bad happened.

Some parishes here have recently decided to charge the families of deceased troops for motorcycle escort and other police duties related to funeral motorcades. It’s got plenty of criticism from veteran’s groups. But police funeral escort duty takes cops away from the “real” job they’re hired to do in La, and many parishes simply can’t accomodate all the current requests.
As for the MJ funeral.. are the Jackson 5 broke? I would imagine Tito Marlon and Germaine (along with the other bro whose name I cannot recall) could surely pony up money to pay OFF-DUTY sheriff’s deputies, state troopers etc to provide security services.
But if the city cooked up the big Staples Center celebration/commemoration, then I say the city should foot the bill for the crowd control/ traffic flow managemt

My understanding is that sales of Jackson related memorabilia/CDs etc has skyrocketed. The family is NOT hurting for money. Not by any stretch. I heard the locals nearby don’t want Neverland to become a second Graceland!

Who paid for the parade security when the Lakers or Dodgers or Raiders won championships? Who pays when a political convention comes to town? Who pays for the mayor’s or governor’s security when he takes a stroll downtown or just goes to the movies. Who pays for extra traffic cops for EVERY ballgame, festival, rally, or big meeting in EVERY city in America?
It’s the city’s job. Period.

5. That was my question. What is the usual procedure? This shouldn’t be any different.

It’s not exactly unreasonable for the public to pay for security at a public event. The mechanism we have for doing that is tax revenue.

Who’s idea was this? Whoever thought a public funeral was a good idea should pick up the tab. A funeral should never be a public spectacle.

Now that Wacko Jacko has assumed room temperature, do you foresee a legion of previously reticent “victims” stepping forward into the media to reveal Neverland secrets? I foresee that. A dead man needs no defense and probably won’t get one anyway.
Legal folks, can the estate sue anyone for defamation of Michael’s character post mortem??

Marlon, Tito, Germaine, Michael and Randy.. I COULD NOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME recall all 5 of the boys.
Havent some of the others had bad brushes with the law? Wife-beating accusations (of course if that brother became a muslim perhaps that’s now not a big deal?)

Sawgunner, I’m sure all kinds of tales will be told in coming years. The problem is that not all of them will be credible so we need to be careful. So many people will be out to make a buck by writing a “tell-all” book. Not saying there’s not dirt to be found, but it’ll be mixed up with undoubtedly many false accusations as well.
The cost of this comes at a time when the city’s in a huge financial mess, of course, and the shortfall is being passed on to residents who are seeing higher fees and cutbacks in their municipal services. So the question of who pays is generating more debate than it might would otherwise.

Michelle Malkin has at townhall dotcom a great piece about the young soldiers who died abroad on or near the date MJ passed. To the list of entertainers done in by drugs let us now add yet another: Hendryx, Elvis, Jim Morrison, Belushi, Chris Farley and now MJ.

Jackie.

O?

That’s where the name Jacko came from. When Jackie O edited his biography he was quite taken with her being called Jackie O so he had people start calling him Jacko.
I only knowthis from reading a biography of her not him.

Jackie was the other brother that no one can think of. Randy wasn’t a member of the original Jackson five and he is not the same guy as the Randy Jackson on American Idol and I know way too much about this.

kbells: That’s okay. I’m sure there’s a spot on some trivia show for you. When you win, your name too can enter the pantheon of those who have lead us ever so rapidly into oblivion…

17. It’s getting worse. I can almost tell the Jonas Brothers apart.
Report comment to moderator
Perhaps since the MSM made a big deal of it all, then they should pay for the expenses incurred. After all, how much revenue have they gained from all the MJ programs (including the “memorial show”)?

#18 Kbells. LOL ! !

Actually the names of the Jonas Brothers are not hard to remember. Kevin, Joe , Nick (maybe Frank when he is older?) K J N is almost KJV but with each word slightly changed. King= Kevin, James = Joe, Version=Nick. It would have been easier if Nick had been named Vick.

The argument over who should pay reminds me of Matthew 26:6-13 ;Mark 14:3-9; and John 12 :3-8.
By all accounts it was a beautiful ceremony. I didn’t watch it. The 3000 police were not needed after all and 1000 were sent home before the ceremony was over. And there are even those who are complaining about the box lunches bought for the policemen.
