Well in the Thank Goodness it didn’t happen in the South column I here that a pool in Philadelphia is being investigated for racial discrimination. I am sure there is more to the story than what I read, but you can bet if it happened in the south it would be all over the news and we would have people coming in from all over to protest it.
In other news, just why do we care what Levi Johnson has to say and why is he pursuing an acting career and a book deal, just because he “knocked up” another teenager. And I DO hate that phrase “knocked up” but it just seemed to fit this particular situation.
There are several people in the world and on World that I wish I could just ignore until they went away.

Late Tuesday afternoon, I had no patients in the hospital. This morning, I have nine who are postpartum. Some time last evening, I was carried away by men in white suits while I laughed maniacally and drooled on myself. Today, I’m comfortably sitting in a padded room, waiting for lunch and, if I’m lucky, story time.
There’s some point to be made here about nationalized health care, but I’m too tired to make it.

As I said, I am sure there is more to the story. I agree Persis. I don’t even get in the pool with my own child. I have explained to her on many occasions that I had my time in the pool when I was younger, and at this stage in life, my role is to sit beside the pool, read a book, and sip on something cold and refreshing. One day she will be in that stage of her life. Although, she was quite impressed with me recently when I wrapped the rope from the blow up boat that was tied to the dock around my ankle and folded my hands behind my head and floated for a while. She also likes to make me perform for her friends and do front handsprings and left handed, right handed and one handed cart wheels. I finally quit doing the one handed ones when I realized I weigh about 30 pounds more these days and could easily snap a bone.

I guess the reason Levi Johnston is in the news is because we are (finally) past the MJ memorials? How unfortunate that we have become a nation more interested in celebrity gossip than what really matters. I heard or read somewhere that the biggest selling magazines are the People/Us/other celebrity mags. I suppose it is escapism. Personally, I think it is because the news junkies don’t want to wait for the weekly edition to come in the mail, so they get the latest on line. After all, by the time the news magazine arrives, the news it contains is at least a week old. So why do the electronic media join in the gossip genre? Why do the big three give an entire half hour newscast over to celebrities? Because they think that is what we want.

The lovely Gretchen Carlson was talking to O’Rilley about the celebrity coverage vs. substantial news. She said that as soon as they left Jackson and went to real stuff, the ratings dropped severely.
That is what people watch. That is the kind of president they elected. That is the government we get.
I’ve said before, it’s how you look on TV.

We used to belong to a pool club when my son, and through the grandkids, was young.
Kids enjoy the pool, and you can’t blame them, they are kids. But the boys “cannonball” and splash into the deck. They holler and throw water on each other and everyone else. They can’t run, but walk 10mph to the diving board. etc.
As Persis said, it may not have been the color of the kids.
Some people are trained to be offended.

#3 Kim,
I’ve not read the pool story. Sounds from the above posts that one batch of patrons arrived and another batch of patrons all of a sudden left en mass. If a group of young uncontrolled rowdies showed up, I’m sure lotsa folks would skeedaddle. That doesnt make them govt discriminators but it might make them bigots.
This is not discrimination. Discrimination is a “Whites Only” sign and a police force and court system to enforce the “only” part.

Hate to divert everyone to a story about NY which probably isnt relevant if you’ve not been there or have no relatives living there, but here I go again:
City-journal dot org has a great story about how dysfunctional the state govt of NYC and NY state are. For years and years the state and city could count on Wall St as their revenue cash cow. But as Gov Patterson now sez, that well has gone dry.
You should read the article and note the state by state comparisons.
I’ll try to put up a link if you wish.

Let me indulge in some native son Texas bragging.
In the 20 July 09 NATIONAL REVIEW we learn that to rent a U-haul trailer to go from Austin Tx to San Francisco Ca would cost you $900 but to rent one to go from SF to Austin?.. About $3000.
Moving van rentals tell the story about which states are thriving and which are not.. the state with more moving vans/U-hauls leaving than coming in? It had been Michigan but I suspect soon it will be either NY or California.

To any computer whizzes out there: Why does my 4-year-old (Mac) laptop fan run non-stop all of a sudden? Started last night and is doing it again this morning, it never shuts off. Is it a battery issue?
Report comment to moderator
Donna — Google “Why does the mac fan run constantly?”
Report comment to moderator
Stubob, I did google it and it does seem to be an issue with macs in general, but in a brief look last night I couldn’t find any “reason” one would just suddenly start to do that. Much of it seemed to be connected to some programs, which I’m not running, so I’m still stumped. But I’ll check more thoroughly when I have more time today.

Report comment to moderator
People don’t watch cable news for news they watch it for an “event” When the “event” is over they go back to reality tv, CSI and Law and Order reruns.
Report comment to moderator
KI,
People who have been married 50 years are at an age that they tend not to want more “stuff,” expensive or not. (I never understood that when I was younger, and found it frustrating when I tried to come up with gift ideas. I’ve only been married 20 years, but I’ve already found, at age 47, that I find little appeal in getting things unless they are useful. And if they’re really useful I’m probably going to have bought it for myself already, perhaps as a Christmas “present” since I do all the Christmas shopping for the family.)
The gifts that I think are most likely to be appreciated would be a gift certificate to a restaurant, or a donation in their name to a charity doing work important to them.

Stubob: The responses I saw seemed to only address the fact that Macs (inherently) run hot (which I’ve personally not found to be the case with mine, although this is the only laptop I’ve ever used). Nothing about what’s going on when the fan suddenly begins running all the time when it didn’t do that before (I write this as the fan whirs loudly).
The only time it would come on before is when I was watching a video. Now, beginning just last night, it’s on constantly with the most basic of uses.
So I think I’ll take it to work with me today, have our photo editor look at it (he’s a mac expert of sorts). Apple also has an 800 # you can call with questions.
Report comment to moderator
Donna, are you close enough to an Apple store to take it to their Genius Bar and have them look at it? And can you get to a command line and run the “top” command? That will show you if a process is using up all the CPU (indicating the fan is on legitimately). Figuring out why that process is running is a different question.

Those are along the lines we were thinking also, Pauline. I just know there are some very creative people out there who may have some good ideas.

Do they go to church with you? Could you donate the flowers on the alter in honor of them? Is there a dish that you make particularly well, or that they really like that you could prepare for them and deliver later?
Report comment to moderator
Donna J,
I don’t own a Mac, but let me take a stab at this one.
The fan is running because your computer is hot.
The question is now, “What is making the computer so hot that the fan runs constantly?”
Start with the simplest explanations.
Have you been using your laptop in an enclosed area where the air
cannot circulate?
Are you using your laptop in an area where dust can get into the machine?
You might want to take the back off the machine and hose it down with a can of compressed air. This might fix your problem. If it doesn’t, the solution might be one of the more complicated ones you’re seeing on the Mac bulletin boards.
The nice thing about the simple solutions is that they are also the cheapest ones to fix!

I don’t care what color a child is but one as young as the one’s I saw in the cliip about the pool do not use the word “appalled”. I don’t even think my 11 year old has ever heard it. It just isn’t one of those useable words right now.

Donna-
Out of curiosity, what kind of Mac laptop and OS are you using? eg: The G4 Titanium PBooks with 15″ screen are known for this problem.
First, use Activity Monitor to see if something is hogging resources.
It is located at: Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor
If nothing unusual there, go to
http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
and search “fan runs” under your model (Powerbook or MacBook or whatever) find out how others have corrected the issue. On my old PB it took resetting the PRAM, which is simple enough. Have you popped out the keyboard and used a can of air to clean out all that dog hair and slobber?
Report comment to moderator
Thanks for all the mac advice, the first thing I’m trying (suggested by our photo guy) is to simply shut it down then reboot it. Maybe/hopefully it’s that simple.
If that doesn’t work, I’ll start trying the other suggestions here. I have the macbook, white plastic casing (low end model), maybe 3-4 years old now, 13″ screen.
Report comment to moderator
I assumed you had already tried restarting to make sure there isn’t a hung app. My bad.
When you do restart, open Applications>Utilities>Disk Utilities select the hard disk on the left, and click “Repair Permissions” It probably will have no effect on the fan, but should be done periodically anyway.

RPN: Usually it’s very difficult to take you seriously, but your #47 is actually quite interesting. President Obama basically spoke the truth about many nations being involved in ending the Cold War (though the Poles were much more pro-active than the Czechs in working for change). People often simply repeat what they hear in saying that Reagan, the USA or ‘the West’ won the Cold War, when of course the citizens of Central and Eastern Europe played a huge role in that whole process. Gotta’ give credit where credit is due!

Whoa, Victoria! What an interview! And she’s a liberal. I have to say that it never occurred to me that Blackmun or the justices who voted with him had the idea that abortion could be used to get rid of unwanted, specific groups. That’s really weird thinking, if you ask me. As I recall, Blackmun’s wife and daughters were the ones who convinced him to create the right to privacy out of those penumbras, and they were thinking about how a girl gets “caught” and her whole life (school, career) “ends.” (Heaven forbid anyone could think before acting!) Had Ruthie’s view (equal protection) been used, she’s right, there would be no way any state could regulate abortion, so I am glad that they saw a compelling state interest in the child as the pregnancy continued. For that we should be grateful at least.
It is interesting that Ruthie even thought the eugenics thing at all, and her reaction to the Hyde Amendment being upheld — well, it really is an example of a highly intelligent person getting it all wrong, but that’s what leftys do. They do it here all the time. They see something that isn’t there which is what Ruthie saw in the Supremes’ Roe decision. Liberals don’t think like normal people.
Are these the kind of thoughts you meant?

NJL, I was shocked when I read it – I couldn’t believe an individual who was so educated in law, elevated to the highest Court in the land, could have been so confused. I am wondering if there might be more to the story? What do you think?
Report comment to moderator
I’m grinning, Victoria: I think she’s a loopy liberal, bluntly put. You’ve seen it here. (Just think how they ignore (and for some rewrite) the history of the founding of the country.) They see the same things we do and come to these loopy conclusions, certainly about what is going on in someone’s head. I mean, why would it ever occur to her that 5 members of the Supreme Court would be thinking about getting rid of whole segments of the population in the first place? It takes months to write an opinion, time to read and revise it, so she really thought that they were sitting around planning the disposal of whole segments of the population. That’s whackadoodle thinking!
It’s a skewed way of looking at things, but we see it here every day in the lefty comments. Which one of them was convinced that the justices weren’t racist when they chose merit in the firefighter’s case? It couldn’t really be merit, it has to be racism! But that’s how THEY think, not how the justices think!
I wish they could see how strange their approach is. They believe anything the leftists tell them to believe and they never question anything. They are told to hate Bush and they do. They are told to worship Obama and they do. They are told by Al Gore that we’re Nazis because we ask questions about climate change, and they believe him. It’s scary, as my nephew used to say.

I don’t have time, nor do I think others on the blog have time to check out your ideas and theory’s – most of us are professionals who have a limited amount of time – we work long hours and what we do must be correct.
My research takes precedent over the nonsense of what blogs are saying – This may be your hobby but for most of us it doesn’t come close – there is real news, TRUTH and then there are the left wing, to socialist blogs which are a waste of time – some of the blogs which conservatives post on aren’t relative or germaine to what’s going on right now either -

I guess I wonder what your motivation for posting them here is? Is it to insinuate that the rest of us would say that kind of thing? Is it to suggest that mainstream conservatives are racist? Is it to “observe” that consertatives and christians are the only ones to make hateful comments? If so, I abhor your shallow and crass practice of dragging the trash through this website to slime the rest of us with it. If not, I remain skeptical of your motives. You have a long history of digging up dirt (if it’s not, in fact, being fed to you instead) ONLY on conservatives.
I would like to point out that those comments are not much more hateful than comments made about Palin by liberals on this blog on a daily basis. Yep, laptop is fine. I’ve always known to shut down the desk top varieties to get them going again, unplugging modems, etc. But somehow it didn’t occur to me when the fan on the laptop wouldn’t stop spinning.
As others have said, there are a whole lot of objectionable things said by people on both sides of the political aisle. I like to the think of this as a place where we don’t engage in that. Rather than the standard knee-jerk reactions, those of us who are Christians try to “think biblically” first and foremost. That means (a) our positions may not always be those consistently of one political party or another; and (b) we express ourselves differently than “the world,” with respect toward those who disagree.
Speaking of which ….. I’d posted last week about how I felt I’d crossed that line in a silly politicized discussion last week with my former journalism teacher as we sat together at the dog park. I sent her an email apology, she replied not to worry about it, so I feel much better.

RPN: And I think Kbells points out that bad behavior exists on the other side as well. I can only imagine some of the things said about Bush’s family and Palin’s as well. But I don’t hold you or others here accountable for that unless I read it directly from you. Then all bets are off.
I don’t believe in guilt by association. I like the notion of giving people the benefit of the doubt. Just because someone on your (or our) “side” politically is a jerk, we shouldn’t assume those motives or ideas of each other. I haven’t even read the link(s), but I’m guessing most of us here would have nothing to do with that kind of thing. By the way, I have never even heard of FreeRepublic.
Children of presidents or other politicians should not be attacked. Period. That’s the principle. Is it violated by those on the extreme left and right? Sure. Are people openly racist and sexist sometimes? Yep. Especially in the Internet era. Anyone with a computer can be a jerk for everyone to see. I’m not surprised by much of anything in that regard.
I don’t argue the point that there are folks with bad manners out there. But that has to do with us … how?

We have bad manners too. People are real quick to run to Palins rescue if she’s slandered, because she’s respected. We don’t speak up when one of us says something unfair about someone we don’t like. maybe because inside we agree with it. That don’t make it right or the Christian thing to do. Everyone has to look in thier own heart and do the best they can.

What I’m talkin about is going on right now on The Popes Gift toObama thread. One of the posters said Michelle Obama looks like a pregnant prostitute. No one of the Christian regulars there cares enough to say a single thing.

#89 — Maybe that’s because many of us haven’t seen it? (I haven’t looked at that thread). But I’ll say it now, I think that is not only a childish remark but it goes over the line.

89. That was a criticism of her choice of clothes. It not fair, but woman are judge more harshly by what they wear. All men have to do is pick black, gray or blue and make sure it fits well and the tie’s not too weird. I’ve seen much worse said about Hilary, Palin, and Pelosi and nearly every other first lady. It’s part of the job.

I saw it and made a comment – You’re right, it is wrong and un-Christian -

“One of the posters said Michelle Obama looks like a pregnant prostitute.”
Bet I can guess who said that.

Donna,
We often hear on this site that conservatives would never attack the Obama children. The comments at FreeRepublic, a mainstream conservative website, prove that to be false. I am not suggesting you say racist things about children.

BTW, I went and looked, and the classless poster is who I thought it would be.

RPN: I don’t pretend to be up on all the political sites, but i’ve never even heard of FreeRepublic. I rather doubt they’re ‘mainstream,’ however.
I do look at powerlineblog which I think generally is quite tempered and fair (though clearly conservative). I can’t imagine anything so inflammatory on that site, or on some of the others that I think would be in the mainstream.

I guess I’m just saying that we all know there are “conservatives” —- and “liberals” — who are frankly way out there. Most of us aren’t on the fringe and wouldn’t have anything to do with those remarks.
So I suppose when I see something like that posted by you, I wonder if the implication you’re making is …. see how low and despicable “your” side is?
Truth be known, both sides have their dark elements. This is no surprise. I’m just not sure I understand what it proves, if anything.
