"And I count myself among the uncultured of those masses, not having listened to classical music since I stopped taking piano lessons and the post-college inertia shriveled my attention span."

At least you sort of remember what your missing. For you and the majority of Americans that never heard live classical music in the first place, such free and accessible symphony concerts are designed. When they don't exist (and they rarely do any more), most of the public simply misses out. Oh they'll pay up for entertainment - rock concerts or baseball - but classical music will most likely remain terra incognita. They won't really know if they like it or not, because they'll take the chance to find out, and arts funding in public education is dying a horrible death.

'Tis a pity ...

But take heart in and be grateful for your free admission - somebody paid for your experience!! God bless 'em!

We used to go to the concerts Sunday afternoon in the summer at West Point. What memories! We took the blanket and basket and frisbees and kids and had a wonderful time. The kids got good family time, the parents got good family time, we all heard good music and singing and developed a taste for a different genre. We visited with friends and we talked about it later. What a priviledge to be able to have time and facilities to do that. Enjoy!
