“I asked God for a preacher and he gave me a quarterback.”
Sports Illustrated has a beautifully-told profile of Tim Tebow — 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, Florida Gators quarterback, son of missionaries, miracle baby and preacher.
In 1986, his dad Bob Tebow prayed, “”God, if you give me a son, if you give me Timmy, I’ll raise him to be a preacher.’” After a difficult, dangerous pregnancy his wife gave birth to Tim.
“All his life, from the moment he could understand, I told him, ‘You’re a miracle baby,’” Bob recalls. “‘God’s got a purpose for you, and at some point I think He’s going to call you to preach.’
“I asked God for a preacher, and he gave me a quarterback.”
Turns out God gave him both. The writer Austin Murphy, who has followed Tebow for three years now, calls him “the most effective ambassador-warrior for his faith I’ve come across in 25 years at SI.” Read the profile to see how Tebow lives out his faith, preaching in prisons and leading his teammates in prayer.

Living out your faith in a “party school” is no easy feat. Tim Tebow seems to be the real deal. With such a platform comes great responsibility and great temptation. May God give TT grace for both.

I think Bob Tebow is the kind of Dad that I hope my children will say they have.

I am not sure that a father ought to put a “calling” on his child. Shouldn’t he leave that to God?

I think that if God had truly called him to be a Quarterback He would have called him to play for Bama.

Kyle A – I think Bob Tebow has a high view of God’s sovereignty, and would have been the first to defer to God’s will if Tim was not cut out for public ministry. If it’s ok to pray for a child, or for a son, it’s certainly ok to pray for a son with a calling to preach. Would that more fathers would pray that!
KBells – Nice. But remember, if you’re not a Gator, you are Gator bait!

Bob’s statement that God has a purpose for Tim reminds me of the quote from the Scottish missionary-athlete in Chariots of Fire, Eric Liddell: “I believe that God made me for a purpose, but He also made me fast. When I run, I feel His pleasure.”

Also remember that Bob didn’t restrict Tim to “preacher – like” activities but assisted the development of his God-given talents.
He already has a famous name & claim to fame, shining for Jesus. Sound like a God thing!
I pray God keeps him close & clean.

Just thought I would bring up the fact that Hannah in the Bible prayed almost that exact same prayer, and God answered the prayer and gave her Samuel. Samuel went on to be greatly used of God in Israel.
It is great to see guys willing to have fun, and still live out their faith. Keep it up TT!
