Beloit College Mindset List
It is time for the annual Beloit College Mindset List, providing an often-amusing look at “the cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college.” This is a compilation of things or ideas that 18-year-olds have lived with their entire life. In other words, it is a reminder of what life was like in 1991.
Beloit’s list serves to remind old people just how much things have changed since “the good old days,” and to remind young people of their need to flee voguishiality (ok, that isn’t a word) through the reading of history.
Here are a few of the items I found interesting:
#4 They have never used a card catalog to find a book.
#5 Margaret Thatcher has always been a former prime minister.
#17 They have never had to “shake down” an oral thermometer.
#19 Condoms have always been advertised on television.
#20 Bobby Cox has always managed the Atlanta Braves.
#21 There has always been a Cartoon Network.
#23 They have always been able to read books on an electronic screen.
#24 We have always watched wars, coups, and police arrests unfold on television in real time.
#39 Ozzy Osbourne has always been coming back.
#68 Official racial classifications in South Africa have always been outlawed.
#72 Migration of once independent media like radio, TV, videos and compact discs to the computer has never amazed them.

This is interesting. It is hard for me to realize that an 18 year old was born in 1991.

I had been out of high school for 10 years in 1991. That year I was in Desert Storm. Wouldn’t have imagined a mideast trip lay ahead of me when I graduated high school!

Not every war. only what the media chooses to screen. Coups? which ones? Coups are supposed to be surprises. “And NOW for our TEN O’CLOCK Coup…”
As far as Cop shows , most of the make me sick. They show cops as brutal and almost unthinking. Certainly intolerant and bullying. You expect the violence to originate from the officers. They show cases where the ‘bad guy’ is really dumb, just like Jay Leno does on his ‘Jay on the street’ skits.
I don’t want our law enforcement officers to be violent. Some of the lawyer shows are just as bad because they show the attorneys violating principles after principles.
How about showing how many people plead guilty or ‘nolo contendere” simply because it costs too much to put up a defense?
How about showing how many thousands of dollars are spent for minor traffic offenses? It is especially bad in California whose cities have spent so recklessly that they crave all the revenue they can get.
When I was growing up I watched Dragnet. Perhaps it was unreal in today’s terms, but at least it did not have the sensationalism of today’s violent cop shows. I have always supported police men and women. I hire them for security at times. But these cop shows do not do them any favors. IMHO.

It has always been hard to tell if a guy walking down the street by himself yelling is crazy or has his girlfriend in his ear.
The TV networks were never a big deal.
“Christians” have always been Republicans. So has the South.
Berlin had a wall????

How many icons of the church…our language, our buildings, our style and way…that aren’t biblical, have also lost their relevance in our culture.
Look at how Jesus spoke…plain. Simple.
Time to go back?

I have an almost 18 year old (born in October, 1991) and I still have a shake down thermometer (but it doesn’t contain mercury–it’s some other metal.) I used to use a digital one, but the battery was always getting low, and I never trusted its accuracy.
Also, I see a lot of things advertised on TV that I wish weren’t but, come to think of it, I don’t remember ever seeing a condom commercial. I don’t know if my son has seen them advertised on TV or not, but I know they handed them out at his high school. (He graduated in June.)

I was having my nails done last week when the young daughter of the person next to me said, “They didn’t have nail places everywhere when you were little? Geez, what kind of world was it back then?”
