George W. Bush speaks
The former president has made few public appearances since President Obama took office, but Monday he spoke at a business seminar in Dallas, getting huge applause when he said,
You can spend your money better than your government can.
(Just to avoid amnesia: President Bush initiated the government bailout of the financial industry a few months before he left office.)
About his low approval ratings in office, he said,
It’s so simple in life to chase popularity, but popularity is fleeting. It’s not real.
Perhaps the most striking comment of the evening came from former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who said in a speech:
We are safer than we were before 9/11 because of President Bush.
Powell specifically criticized the Bush administration’s policy towards Iraq after he left his post as secretary in 2005.

If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what it is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?” – Alice In Wonderland, Lewis Carroll

When the US backs out from Iraq and Iraq’s fleeting experiment in actual democracy is ended by Iran’s Shiite proxies there will be lots of “Who Lost Iraq?” talk akin to what happened after Mao’s China triumph. Defeat is an orphan while victory has a 1,000 fathers goes the old proverb.
Meanwhile.. for W to suddenly come forward as any type of fiscal watchdog, limited govt Reagan style conservative? Irony abounds with that one!

Thomas1, for you to compare the Democrats to the water-pipe toking, nonsensical, obnoxious and absolutely unhelpful caterpillar is very very insulting and inappropriate. You owe the caterpillar an apology!!

I wonder what President Bush would say about the big shootout shaping up for the Gov job in Texas. On the one hand, Bush’s successor Rick Perry now faces off against Kay Bailout Hutchison. Neither one can claim the clear conservative mantel of a Debra Medina. And the Texas Dem goob candidates? In a word, hapless.

Sawgunner, it’s Alice that was unhelpful in that particular encounter, what with the namecalling and all.

The irony in Texas is that national candidates come to Texas to raise money and go spend it elsewhere. Now all the big money R folks are routing their dollars to a statewide contest for a very constitutionally weak Gov office. (A legacy of the strong exec the state had in Reconstruction) The state R party controls all elected state offices, but this duke out between Rick and Kay will be draining, to phrase it mildly

Fairly long historical essay about politics in the mid 1800s. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Today, we have old nonsense in new bottles.

The spending didn’t begin with the first bailout.
We were very disappointed that BUSH could have done a line item veto on lots of PORK.
Why do Republicans think they should compromise because the Dems yell “bi-partisan”? The Rep. have nothing to offer the Dem. other than a vote for Dem. agenda. And then in the next election the Rep. compromise will be thrown in their face.

I truly am scared of the world my daughter is going to inherit. I do not think GW Bush got us into this mess. I think he inherited it from Clinton, and it probably goes on up the line back to Kennedy or Eisenhower. I don’t think Obama will be the one to fix it either. I think we are probably going to have to go through at least one more president before we all wake up and realize we are going to have to do something about it. Nothing happens in a vaccuum. Everything is inter-related.

Mr. Bush is a private citizen. Yesterday is past, and tomorrow has enough troubles to keep the USA occupied

Fleeting things are also “real,” Mr. President. As in we “really, really” didn’t like you!

#14 Mynock – I suppose he still doesn’t care.

Ok.
What else is the least popular president in American history going to say?
I do find it highly ironic that the man who wrecked the Republican party for at least a generation is asked for his thoughts on effective leadership.
I’d love to see that PowerPoint.
Tip #4: Come up with demeaning nicknames for your staff (Brownie, Tiny, Turdblossom) and major world leaders (Dino, Pootie Poot). They love that stuff.
Tip #2: Garishly congratulate staff when they screw up. The bigger the mess, the louder you praise them. The phrase “Heck of a job” and a few Presidential Medals might come in handy.
Tip #1: The sole basis for filling positions is personal loyalty.

Sean,
He gets to not care. But he doesn’t get to pretend that all the people who hate him are as fictional as his WMD evidence!

Kim, if I had kids, I’d be worried, too. But I don’t, so I only worry about the government knocking me off in the next 30 years. It seems no matter how you guys try to raise your kids up right, the entire society is against you.

Mynock – what is yellow cake uranium? What is its standard use?
I don’t think he cares if you hate him any more than any of the rest of us care if you hate him. Hate is what makes a person bitter so if you want to keep hating that is fine, you will probably hate Obama after he doesn’t deliver all your comforts also. The problem with hating is that you set up the next person whom you think will deliver on all his promises to give you comfort and class and coolness up for huge failure and even possibly your hate when he/she doesn’t do enough of what you think they should do.
So by all means keep hating Bush. There is an old saying “you reap what you sow”.

End of civilization by the end of the century. As much Bush’s fault as anybody else’s; as little Bush’s fault as anybody else’s.

President W said; “You can spend your money better than your government can.”
True statement!
The hard worker does deserve to rightfully reap the fruit of his or her own labor, with a fair minimum of liability to the tax man. That’s a fudamental principle of economic justice.
And while I honor George W. Bush’s service overall, I have to say that he helped prove the validity of this statement above by allowing the gov’t (congress) to spend too much of our money unwisely. But he does not hold a candle to Obama in unwise and unjust excessive deficit bulging spending.

I agree with Kim in #12 to a point.
There are men who can lead this country, GOD knows who they are – Let us pray that happens.
We know from Scripture that things will become worse as we face the end, we can be the examples in our churches, families, business, or anywhere to tell others of Christ our Saviour.

What was that old saying “if you can’t say something nice about someone then…..” With a world view of mankind including myself lost in total depravity, welded to the basic tendency of not basically good but basically bad, including myself. Any comments about current and past presidents must be couched on the fact these leaders, elected officials, politicians, bureaucrats, are just as human as the rest of us. Not perfect or bent toward perfectionism but just as confused and stuck on wonderment. In that light Mr. Bush did the best he could. That’s all we should expect from ourselves. Presently, Mr Obama is doing the best he can.

Our system of government promotes and even enhances the weak side of humans. Lacking accountability in position of responsibility. With little or no punishment for lack of poor decision making thousands of government employees from local schools to the white house pursue each minute of each day working towards retirement. And,or enhancing an image, shuffling papers, looking like we are doing something real important.
