Politics or baseball?
With the first pitch of the World Series happening tonight, political pundits are fretting that folks in New Jersey may suddenly find themselves more interested in the Yankees versus the Phillies than in Corzine vs. Christie. The two teams in this year’s Fall Classic are located near New Jersey, and already the heated governor’s race between Republican Christie and Democrat Corzine (plus Independent Daggett) is starting to get bumped off the state’s front pages in favor of sports coverage. This despite the fact that the election is less than a week away- fortunately it is on a scheduled off day so people will be able to vote.
Christie has been leading most of the year in the polls, sparking nationwide debate that Republicans are making an electoral comeback. But recently the race has tightened. And with multi-millionaire Corzine spending like he’s the New York Yankees (to a tune of $23 million of his own money), it’s a good bet that he will be in better shape to continue to plop down cash for commercials even though the World Series is expected to send ad rates skyrocketing.
All three candidates claim to be rooting for the Yankees. No word yet on how this will affect the Phillies voting block.

Our manager mentioned the $23 million this morning. There are people who find that offensive. Christie has about $11 million from donations. Whether you agree with the politics or not, it is very hard for “normal” people to get their foot in the door when they have to go up against a personal fortune.
The real problem is which team do these guys favor? If you live in south Jersey, you may very well favor the Philadelphia team because that’s the major city as opposed to northern Jersey where I am which seems to favor the Yankees. I think there may be people who won’t vote for someone because the candidate supports the “wrong” team, but the rest of you are more sports oriented than I am, so I don’t know if that holds water.
The truth is all the seats in the legislature are up for grabs, too, so it may come down to how people are doing economically.

Politics or baseball? Most people of voting age that I know can walk and chew gum at the same time.
So what if the politicians are being bumped off the front pages, how many people read newspapers anymore anyway?

I wonder how many time Fox will show Giuliani tonight. He averaged about 10 appearances per night during the ALCS series, even though he is not even an office holder. Meanwhile the Mayor, who was there, got not a single shot.

What does Giuliani have to do with the NJ governor’s race? New Jersey anything?

Arcadia @#3: Perhaps Fox showed Giuliani and not the NYC mayor is because the rest of the US knows Giuliani. I notice you do not even name the mayor. Is that because you, like I, do not know who it is?

But Arcadia isn’t Bloomberg (some people do know) a Republican also. I mean I know he is an independent now but he leans right not left as evidenced by the fact that he actually has started his own business and run it very well.

Late…but I thought I’d point out that they showed the mayor in game 1…he was asleep!
