McDonnell takes Virginia
Republican Bob McDonnell has easily defeated Democrat Creigh Deeds in Virginia’s race for governor. Emily Belz reports from WORLD’s Washington Bureau:
President Obama was the first Democratic candidate for president to win Virginia since 1964, but that tidal wave of support didn’t course into Tuesday’s governor’s race. Republican Bob McDonnell handily defeated Democrat Creigh Deeds in what conservatives characterized as a referendum on the White House and liberals characterized as an unlucky series of events.
Read Emily’s report in its entirety here.
The GOP appears to be in for a sweep in the Old Dominion, taking the lieutenant governor and attorney general races as well.

Right On!!
I just hope that the incoming Republicans have learned that Liberal-lite does not work. And that they CANNOT govern via press-approval.

The great thing about the Republicans sweeping all the major elections in VA is that first and foremost they are conservatives. Mr. McDonnell will be very good for VA and now maybe we can get back to actually running a balanced budget and get rid of the riff raff in our state.

It’s actually a Republican sweep of the big three elections here in VA.

Klasko,
I’ve been thinking about you, NJLawyer and Nana – I hope this is going to go right.
When we get to your area again, I sure hope you can arrange some sort of luncheon – MY TREAT! I would love to meet all three of you.

I’m glad. Still, I wonder…
The swing from Obama-mania in Virginia (blinded by blue in 2008) to a Republican sweep a year later reveals a lesson we may not want to admit about the power that hype, cash, biased reporting, trends and historic moods have in the voting behavior of many American people. Perhaps it’s harder to raise quite as much hype, smoke, cash & manipulatable moods in an election off year so voters gravitate a bit more toward their convictions (at least those who have convictions).
Just wondering.

KLASKO-KLASKO-KLASKO! The margin seems to be holding at 20%. I don’t think Creigh Deeds will be filing for a recount this time. I’m following the live-blogging at Real Clear Politics where one Kyle Trygstad posted a link to a great map of election results on the Virginia Public Access Project homepage.

Victoria are you south of the 10th CD?

As much as I hate to be up this late, I’m tempted to wait for more results from NJ and NY’s 23rd CD. And I’ll want to be up at 5 for Andy & Grandy’s analysis. I’m missing and thinking so hard on NJL. Still no word?

JOEL MARK, voters have always been fickle. Having their ears “tickled” by 0bama last year, reality is setting in. Much less than 0bama winning, McCain lost. Northern VA’s “hometown news” is in many ways the federal government. You can’t fool all the people all the time.

Joel & Nana,
McDonnell won because he is a smart guy whose moderate-right views have broad appeal. Despite having gone to Regent, he is no disciple of Pat Robertson. In many ways, I’d liken him to Mitch Daniels, whom I believe to be one of America’s top governors.
On the other hand, I don’t see McDonnell as a guy who’s going to waste much effort on hot-button social issues. So, the the WorldMag crowd will likely celebrate him for an evening, and then turn its attention back onto Sarah Palin.

Right you are, RSD. Now, what kind of hot-button social issues will he actually have to deal with as governor? Sarah Palin might only end up being relevant to the extent that liberals are afraid of her appeal in highlighting conservative viewpoints. That’s fine enough for me.

One of the biggest differences that we in Southeastern Virginia noted was the lack of buses this year as opposed to last year. I vote every time at 7:30 a.m. on my way to work. Last year as I pulled up 3 buses also pulled up gorged with folks that had probably never seen our polling station before. ACORN was in big letters on magnetic signs on the buses. This year, no buses, no lines out the door and a much more friendly atmosphere than last year. Keep in mind that the district in Chesapeake where I live is predominantly black so I don’t think it had anything to do with that as there were plenty of black voters at the polls this time as well.
Personally I believe this should send a shot across the bows of the large takeover ships the Dems are pulling into harbors all across the U.S.

Drudge says VA was won by 18%
That’s amazing, if true
