Owens wins NY-23
After losing high-profile gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, the Democratic Party salvaged the night by winning the New York 23rd District congressional race. In a battle that took on national prominence, Democrat Bill Owens narrowly defeated Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. Republican Dede Scozzafava, who dropped out of the race on Saturday, still captured about 6 percent of the vote.

Such is the politics of the possible and a huge wake-up call for North Country Republicans and independents. Hoffman will come back to challenge them again on principles of living in liberty or on government plantations.

This is the first time a Democrat has won that district in over 100 years. Thank you Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck!

Given the wins by Christie and McDonnell I would say this recommends a return to the center for conservatives, so far as a winning strategy goes.

Scozzafava’s name was still on the ballot. It’s amazing that she didn’t get more votes.
I hope Owens enjoys his year in office, it should set him for the rest of his life.

Yes, Amphipolis, and the year will fly by and be even faster before the 2010 primary election.

Ah, the “will of the people” ….

“This is the first time a Democrat has won that district in over 100 years.”
That’s simply because a Republican did not run against him at all. Zip, nada. And yet, the Democrat still barely won.
Hoffman was previously an unknown. Not bad, considering that.

Scozzafava’s name was on the ballot but she was not in the race. She dropped out and endorsed the Dem. It was not Palin or Beck that had an impact here. It was mindless moderate Republicans who put her forward without an ounce of vision or conviction to distinguish themselves from the Democrats.

OK, so the “referendum on Obama” that the conservatives want to say last night was yielded:
A Republican gubernatorial win in Virginia, where both parties have significant support and the state house swings between parties regularly. So, win for the conservatives, but a predictable one.
A Republican gubernatorial win in New Jersey, barely, which was a bit of a surprise. NJ is pretty solidly Democratic, NJLawyer nonwithstanding, so score one for the Rs.
A conservative (though not Republican) loss in this New York House race.
So you get one surprise win and one surprise loss, and one predictable win. Really not so much of a revolution, is it?

11: Bunker Hill wasn’t much of a revolution either.

Did the Whigs have this problem when the Republicans were formed?
Did some voters linger with the Whigs, thereby splitting the vote, which gave the opposition a win?
Report comment to moderator
Maybe a third party win would send a message to both parties that enough is enough!

I understand the national GOP had supported Scozzafava to the tune of 1 million dollars.
Although Hoffman ran on the Conservative ticket, any idea how much money/time the GOP gave him in tacit support?
And, do we know how much Hoffman spent versus Owens?
Thanks

nytimes.com leads with the headline, “Republicans Seek Impetus From Victories in N.J. and Va.” but doesn’t have Owens anywhere on the front page.
What an elitist newspaper! A historic victory of Democrat in New York isn’t important.

Contrary to JOEL MARK, I don’t think the election was even close. The conservative got 45%. The liberals got 55% between them. (That’s assuming you believe your own campaign talk about Owens being a liberal and Scozzafava being a flaming liberal.) 10% is a solid and comfortable margin. It shows that Democrats in the Northeast perform very well for the party.

From Huffpo:
Doug Hoffman lost his election last night. He was supported by a plurality of talk radio entertainers, and a majority of former half-term governors of Alaska, but it wasn’t enough. An obscure quirk of constitutional law says you also need votes from voters. This is the same cruel hurdle that tripped up three of his other biggest supporters, Gary Bauer, Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani, all of whom ran for President of the United States, but failed the “getting votes” test, because everyone hates their guts.
With their help, and a million dollars from the Club for Growth, Doug Hoffman lost a part of New York State that had voted Republican since the best way to get from Albany to Buffalo was by canal.
Not bad for a first try.
Doug Hoffman didn’t just have money to burn and the staunch support of Facebooking frost bunnies, Fox News and the Ghosts of Vanity Campaigns Past. He also had coots on the ground; an army of volunteers from the tea bag movement, the 9/12 Project and the fanatic anti-choice fringe. The problem was, they could shout at the polling places as loud as they wanted, and they did, but they didn’t live there, so they weren’t allowed to vote.
