Be careful Emily. You could get attacked here for being against healthcare. Well, actually you don’t say you are against healthcare. But you do write for WMB.

We need more and more videos like this…it appears that it may be the only way to educate the unfocused…like the twenty somethings that are under direct assualt via mandated health care coverage.

Pretty clever. And being a ‘mac’ person, I’ve always admired their ads.

All of this should be re-framed to reflect what it really is: a subsidy and income transfer from one generation to another. That by itself is troubling. To really have a successful ponzi scheme welfare state you pretty much need to ensure the two things we seem to not have too much of lately: early marriages with big families.
With the exception of the Duggers, those seem to be increasingly rare.
Now with medicare reimbursemt not covering the cost of care, can we expect those with private insurance to pay more to comp the doctors and hospitals for the loss they take on medicare?
You betcha!

My wife and I had one of those dinners last night that I hate going to because the wife of my friend is a died in the wool liberal Democrat. I was really behaving myself well when all of a sudden she piped up and asked for our forgiveness. Dumbfounded I asked her for what and she said that after reading through portions of Madame Pelosi’s monstrosity that perhaps the things that she had stood behind her whole life were nothing more than a lie and an attempt by a bunch of leftists that simply want to ruin everything great about America. It turned out to be a very good evening and simply because one more liberal actually read the trash that the liberals in DC are trying to cram down our throats.

EMILY, I’m tempted to quibble with your use of “attacking.” But I haven’t seen them and what’s good for goose…..

It says something when even the liberals can see through this.
Does Liberalism equal Socialism? I don’t think so, myself. But, are many of our congressional Liberal Democrats trying to pass Socialism like laws…? I really believe they are, and that their Liberal supporters are starting to become uneasy.

Hey Donna J
I use to be an Apple person and then was dragged to Windows PC.
I want to return but it’s hard. It’s SO expensive and I’m not impressed with the new one that has everything in the screen. It was hot to the touch even though in freezing air conditioning.
Our computer is on it’s last leg (doesn’t even have legs anymore).
Not sold on the troublesome windows 7 and totally avoided W.Vista.
I’m thinking of spending money to fix my XP and wait for a rapture or something.

We are constantly accused of not reading the 2000 page healthcare bill. This representative fills us in with a few of the specifics on what our healthcare future looks like.

After hearing that I wondered if they were really passing a healthcare bill. I did one of those cartoon doubletakes.

News2me, yes, you could of course wait for the rapture. But the Mac refurbished line is also an option — a few hundred dollars less and good as new (I’ve only heard of one case where someone had problems).
I haven’t had the heat problems I keep reading about & I have both a refurbished iMac (purchased last summer when my 7-year-old Gateway gave up the ghost) and a Mac-pro laptop.
But we digress ….

thanks Donna J.
It’s good to know how other people have fared with the Mac.
I’ve been in the PC world for–well, it seems like forever.

For many years, I worked in the computer industry, though I am not very smart. I taught computer classes. I taught PC and Macintosh classes. (I could use both types of computers.)
When people argued about PCs vs. Macs in front of me, I would say, “I don’t regard a computer operating system as a religion. I am a mercenary. I will use whichever type of computer somebody pays me to use.”
For that matter, I don’t believe medical care will keep me from dying eventually. I will use whatever system of medical care seems to work and accept whatever system will help pay for it.
For that matter, I will worship whatever religion somebody pays me to believe. Do I have a bid from Buddhism? Hinduism? Islam? Christianity? Oh, yes, you are promising me eternal life? May I speak to one of your satisfied customers?
Oh, they all live somewhere else now? Elysian Fields Estates? Sounds like a delightful place. May I take a tour? Not until I die? How quaint.

I may go Mac some day, but my Bible Study Software, Logos 4, is up and running under PC. I’ve always been a PC owner. Never had a Mac. The peole on the study software that are using Mac software to run PC programs seem to have too much trouble for me to want to go that route. So, until Logos 4 gets the Mac down, and they are working to, then Mac is just out of the question for me.
Hmmm, isn’t the video about health care? Oh, what’s the anology? Oh yeah! If we ever go with this health care plan, there will be a day when we will hope for the simplicity and effectiveness of the way it use to be.

I did kind of feel I was getting off the track but the Mac was brought up regarding the ad.
Not trying to make this a Mac thread. Just noting that I have computer CRASH on the brain right now. Among other things that wake me up at night and keep me in constant ADD mode. Losing train of thought in middle of a conversation and “what did I come in here for.” It’s what happens when a mind doesn’t stay in the place it is at the moment. Believe me it’s not just old age.

Am I missing something, or is this add just flat out lying?

The tax on people with no health insurance would serve to prevent people “gaming” the system and going without health insurance until they actually need it. This would be necessary because insurers would be prohibited from denying people due to pre-existing conditions.
In the video, Janie complains she’ll be taxed $1000, which she claims is 12% of her income. So she’s making $8000 per year. According to that AP article, the senate plan would have the tax rising to $750 in 2017. The House plan puts it at 2.5% of AGI, which in Janie’s case would be $200 if her income is $8000/yr.
What the video fails to mention is that under our current system, if she’s making $8000/yr Janie does not have a job that gives her insurance. And she can’t afford private insurance. Which is presumably why, in the video, she says she doesn’t have insurance and complains about the penalty. Except that under the proposed legislation *she would actually be able to GET insurance*.

Most of the time legal opinions hone in on a particular issue and other issues “need not be reached” as the judge would say. With respect to this legislation, we don’t have to reach the issue of whether it is socialism or not. It should fail on bankruptcy alone.

The commercial is a good idea and cute. It does highlight the totalitarianism that forces people to buy something under penalty of law. But do people actually take this seriously.
There doesn’t seem to be much concern for the gargantuan health bill which remakes health care for all while only helping a tiny fraction of the population, mostly those who don’t pay taxes or who don’t want health care.
How about a commercial that says health care will be paid for with 17-20% of pretax income of people who actually pay taxes?
Report comment to moderator
It’s estimated that 20% of those under 65 don’t have health insurance. That’s hardly a tiny fraction.

Population of the United States = 307,905,634
Number of People Obama said are without insurance = 30M
That’s 10%. But Obama is including people who don’t want insurance or aren’t eligible. The actual number is about 10-15M which brings the percentage down to about 3%.
Is 3% a small fraction of 100% or not?
So why completely overhaul the whole system to pay for 3%? The answer is in the question. This bill has nothing to do with improving health care and everything to do with a fundamental shift of power to Washington by purchasing the votes of those who pay nothing into the system.

#18 Pastor Roy:
how about Obamaism?
This is a serious answer. I regard Obama with considerable suspicion and distrust. On the other hand, I regard the political opinions of most of the comment posters at wmb with considerable suspicion and distrust.
The decision for me is: which suspicion/distrust outweighs the other?

Hmmm, as well ou should, RN. Which has more power?

Ha ha ha.
This ad is almost funny with its conspicuous omission.
Mac vs PC ads compare two competing products.
Notice how this ad didn’t compare “Hi, I’m Government Health Care” with “And I’m the Private Insurance Industry”?

Like this, for example.

#23:
I said 20% of people under 65. The number I’ve heard bandied about is 47 million. Note that there are also 40 million persons over the age of 65, the vast majority of whom would not be able to afford insurance if forced to purchase it privately. Mostly because people that old are more likely to have serious medical problems, which means the cost of their insurance (in order for an insurance company to turn a profit on the policy) increases drastically.

The concept here is good. This particular segment falls a little flat…or maybe it’s the acting. I dunno, I’d like to see more, though.
