“22 words” of mercy and kindness
Abraham Piper, the son of John Piper, has a neat blog called “22 words” that nearly always has something pointed, pithy, punny, or funny to say.
Yesterday, he wrote something a little different:
Today Jon Acuff started raising $30,000 for a kindergarten in Vietnam.
Donations could be made – even small amounts like $5. I checked back later in the day to see how things were progressing and read this update:
Over $27,500 $28,200 $29,000 $30,000 has already come in. Let’s just finish this tonight!
Done. Amazing.
Are you kidding? In one day? Abraham’s site gets a lot of traffic, but he isn’t in the upper echelons of popular blogs.
And yet, in just a few short words he pointed folks to one meaningful project…and in one day the mission was accomplished.
So, this morning he posted the following:
8 kids that have been waiting over 6 months for sponsors. Let’s knock it down to O.
In the time it took me to get coffee and write this post, it has been updated to read:
- Abner Sponsored!
- Alejandra Sponsored!
- Carlos
- Gerber
- Johan
- Kevin
- Sintya Sponsored!
- Brayan Sponsored!
- Javier Sponsored!
What an exciting and joy-producing event! And what a difference this will make in the lives of the children sponsored. Head over to the original post at Abraham’s site to see who still needs sponsorship at this time.
“Whoever despises his neighbor is a sinner, but blessed is he who is generous to the poor.” (Proverbs 14:21 ESV)

AWESOME!
Our pastor challenged us to give to those in need at Christmas this year instead of giving each other gifts.

When I’m asked by family what I want for Christmas, I tell them to send a donation to the USO, Salvation Army, etc. There are any number of worthwhile charities.

Well, while 22 words helped promote it, the blog raising the $30,0000 was “Stuff Christians Like” (the Jon Acuff he mentioned), which is also fairly popular. So that ups the numbers a bit.
Still, those are both very amazing. Raising $30,000 through donations promoted on a couple blogs in 18 hours is pretty crazy. Praise the Lord!

Our pastor challenged us to contribute to Water for Christmas. You can learn about it at http://www.water4christmas.com/.
I knew that our music pastor’s wife was involved in it, and that she and her husband have a passion for helping children in Africa (they adopted two from Sierra Leone), but I hadn’t realized until now, when I went to the website to copy the URL, that she was the one who started Water for Christmas, after seeing how bad things were when they went over there.

From my reading this morning:
“Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.” (Psalm 41:1)

That’s nice. Good works are always good, but they won’t get you into Heaven. But just to be on the safe side…

Some people chop wood. Some people give sacrificially.

NANA – Thank you.
All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do. (Galatians 2:10 NIV) – http://pitersa.ru
