Just how is it that this wacko in Seattle could shoot and kill 4 cops? I could see getting one or maybe two, but 4? Might wanna review training procedures at the academy, Mr Police Chief!
And this Tiger Woods caper? I think he entered the “I can afford a 24/7 chauffeur” zone a good while back.
But you gotta applaud his attorney for stonewalling the entire matter.

What happened in Dubai?
I’ve been out of the loop. Was there some type of financial melt down? Will it affect the US markets?

Good Morning Everyone.
From the pen of Charles Spurgeon
2 Chronicles 25:9
Amaziah said to the man of God, “But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the troops of Israel?” And the man of God answered, “The LORD has much more to give you than this.”
A very important question this seemed to be to the king of Judah, and possibly it is of even more weight with the tried and tempted O Christian. To lose money is at no times pleasant, and when principle involves it, the flesh is not always ready to make the sacrifice. “Why lose that which may be so usefully employed? May not the truth itself be bought too dear? What shall we do without it? Remember the children, and our small income!” All these things and a thousand more would tempt the Christian to put forth his hand to unrighteous gain, or stay himself from carrying out his conscientious convictions, when they involve serious loss. All men cannot view these matters in the light of faith; and even with the followers of Jesus, the doctrine of “we must live” has quite sufficient weight.
The Lord is able to give thee much more than this is a very satisfactory answer to the anxious question. Our Father holds the purse-strings, and what we lose for his sake he can repay a thousand-fold. It is ours to obey his will, and we may rest assured that he will provide for us. The Lord will be no man’s debtor at the last. Saints know that a grain of heart’s-ease is of more value than a ton of gold. He who wraps a threadbare coat about a good conscience has gained a spiritual wealth far more desirable than any he has lost. God’s smile and a dungeon are enough for a true heart; his frown and a palace would be hell to a gracious spirit. Let the worst come to the worst, let all the talents go, we have not lost our treasure, for that is above, where Christ sits at the right hand of God. Meanwhile, even now, the Lord makes the meek to inherit the earth, and no good thing doth he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
I might also add these verses to Charles Spurgeon’s thoughts
1 Timothy 6:6-11
But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.
May everyone be blessed this day

The world may be in chaos and madness, but in the kingdom of our Lord there is peace, joy and righteousness. Let us be wise as we journey in this world, not being caught up in its ways and understanding the difference between the “cosmos” and the “creation”. As kim says; “I hope you have a blessed and glorious day.”

Thanks Kim, Joe, Roger for the encouraging words. It looks like we may need to encourage each other in the Lord all the more so as troubled times continue. But I am very convinced that all these troubles are really opportunities to demonstrate God’s faithfulness…That’s how I’m using them anyway.
I look forward to reading the Dubai piece, Mickey.

I agree DJ. God is still on his throne and this world is not our home. The troubles of this world are only temporary and there are no problems. Only opportunities for solutions.

I reported yesterday, JoeB, that my guests enjoyed it! I have proved that I can cook! The South is rising again, and when I make the cookies with the bourbon, it really will rise, so to speak. (Just a little cooking humor there.)
The cops were sitting around a table doing paperwork and were caught totally off guard. Who would expect that? Fox is reporting that they have the guy surrounded.
Tiger Woods apparently is not required to talk. It’s unfortunate that he needs to get a lawyer to face the public. It should be enough for the media that he says he doesn’t want to talk.

I look forward to an explanation regarding Dubai.
How about the articles at Fox where the climatologists admit they threw out temperature data. Or Switzerland which amended its constitution to allow no more minarets!
When I was at the grocery store the other day, a student from the university in town asked me to answer some questions, a survey, about climate change. I was wary thinking I had a crazy, but at one point, I said I wasn’t a true believer — and she agreed. This comforted me somewhat. At least they are questioning things.

I was a little worried there for a second.
Church steeples OK, but minarets not?
Does the early release wreck Huckabee’s chances for the nomination?
If so, it hardly seems fair to him. But then as #9 says:

Random, you need never worry.
The Swiss voted, following the requirements for a constitutional amendment. Shocked the government and the pollsters because the people lied to the pollsters.
Huckabee didn’t think he’d run again according to a “tape” I watched of FoxNewsSunday. Said the GOP powers never supported him and he wouldn’t go through that again without that support. Besides he likes his job with Fox.

JoeB/Spurgeon: “If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.”
That sums if up. We don’t need mansions, etc., not really. I would like another room for an office, but when it comes down to it, I don’t really need a house or the expense that goes with it.

This is another interesting story about our president I found interesting this morning:

I am looking forward to the coming article about Dubai. The financial melt down there very closely resembles what happened in Kazakhstan in the summer of 2007 when I was there. It is basically the same thing as Freddie/Fannie in that the banks were loaning money out to all comers and not really checking to see if they could repay the loans and then when loans started defaulting (especially on new buildings that weren’t being completed because the original plans used costs of building materials based on costs from 3-7 years before and building material costs sky rocketed so buildings weren’t being finished and people stopped paying on apartments they may never actually have completed).
I think the review that needs to be done even here in the U.S. is the lending policies and also the purchase of mortgages by people like Fannie/Freddie after wards. That seems more germane than some pay czar controlling costs.

One thing I respect about Notre Dame football is that they are not afraid to schedule Pac-Ten teams. But the problem is that this sticks them with more losses than other teams east of the Mississippi of equal caliber who seem to be less brave than Notre Dame.
There is not a team in college football, in my view, that would be undefeated if they had a schedule as difficult as ANY team in the Pac-Ten.

#16: Why would people lie to pollsters?
Report comment to moderator
NJL, the only place I’ve heard about the Climategate scam, other than FoxNews, is from a UK paper on Drudge. The MSM is not picking it up. Indeed, their emphasis is on Copenhagen.
There was a short article in Consumer’s Report, in answer to a question, that says that E10 (ten percent ethanol) in your car will reduce gas mileage approximately 3%. The cost remains the same. But I recently saw a notice outside a Texaco station saying, “We have 100% gas, no ethanol”.
The Dubai thing is interesting. They, and China, have all the money in the world. I think the bottom line in all this is that it’s impossible to make more money than politicians, or rulers can spend. There are people who live somewhat below their means, and though they have had modest incomes, do very well. Others, live beyond their means, and regardless of income, are always in debt. (Michael Jackson? Dubai, USA?)
Report comment to moderator
One of the student’s questions was about Copenhagen. Did I know what it was? Our hope there is the Republicans in the Senate. If FoxNews keeps talking about it, then the MSM will have to mention it sooner or later — which is why we need a FoxNews.
KarenO, the judge I worked for argued vigorously against my buying my parents’ home, and I think he was right in retrospect, my sentimentality notwithstanding. One person does not need a whole house and the expense–boy did he “explain” (forcefully) the expense!–just doesn’t warrant it. This way I write a check and it’s over for another month.

I don’t necessarily lie to pollsters, but I may not tell them the whole truth. Why should I answer personal questions to someone who just rang me up on the phone?
Besides, I told the whole truth to Senator Chris Dodd’s pollster one year long ago on the phone in CT, and they didn’t believe me, anyway. The questions were obviously slanted, and I had a wonderful time pricking their bubble of expected answers.

Joel, I disagree, the PAC ten is overrated…
When Stanford is a quality team…its over rated.
Scheduling Notre Dame doesnt make it tougher.
Notre Dame will play them, because they are mediocre
The real national championship happens this week when Florida takes on Alabama.
I will say that the PAC ten has been above the BIG 12 this year, though.
But as far as toughest schedules. Miss State had to play 6 top 15 teams this season. Five of them cracked the top 10. The sad thing is that they coulda been 7 – 5 if they didnt have a midget qb handing the other teams the ball all season.

This venerable and much honored WW II vet is well known in Hawaii
for his seventy-plus years of service to patriotic organizations and causes
all over the country. A humble man without a political bone in his body,
he has never spoken out before about a government official, until now.
He dictated this letter to a friend, signed it and mailed it to the president.
Dear President Obama,
My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year. People meeting me for the first time don’t believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert.
I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos’n Mate. Now I live in a “rest home” located on the western end of Pearl Harbor, allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.
One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.
So here goes.
I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.
I can’t figure out what country you are the president of.
You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like:
” We’re no longer a Christian nation”
” America is arrogant” – (Your wife even
announced to the world,”America is mean-
spirited. ” Please tell her to try preaching
that nonsense to 23 generations of our
war dead buried all over the globe who
died for no other reason than to free a
whole lot of strangers from tyranny and
hopelessness.)
I’d say shame on the both of you, but I don’t think you like America, nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this country has given you. To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House.
After 9/11 you said,” America hasn’t lived up to her ideals.”
Which ones did you mean? Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British? Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man, that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War? I hope you didn’t mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.
I don’t think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination. You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.
Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man.
Shape up and start acting like an American. If you don’t, I’ll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue. You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves.
And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don’t want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts, who was putting up a fight? You don’t mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don’t want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.
One more thing. I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you’re the Commander-in-Chief now, son. Do your job. When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him. But if you’re not in this fight to win, then get out. The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you’re thinking of.
You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president.
You’re not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy. That’s not our greatest threat. Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now.
And I sure as hell don’t want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle.
Sincerely,
Harold B. Estes

As to buying or renting, I rented in Chicago a lot cheaper than I could have bought (about what I would have paid for property tax and insurance alone), and because I was a renter I didn’t have to do snow removal or maintenance, and I could move whenever I wanted (30 days’ notice). It was definitely the way to go.
But in Nashville I bought, inexpensively, and currently my mortgage is less than it would cost to rent this home. (A couple years ago a home down the street was renting for $75 more than my mortgage payment on a 15-year note, and I’ve since lowered the payment $100 a month.) In less than eight years I will be mortgage free and my monthly payments will be freed up. Yes, I’ll still have maintenance and what to me is worse, the responsibility of home ownership. But I bought within my means, especially if I had a roommate. I can have a dog (none of the places I’ve rented have ever allowed that). And my “rent” can never go up (though of course my taxes can). My brothers remember vividly when long-term renters down the street from us in my childhood home were evicted. It was the seventies, and their rent had skyrocketed to several times the cost of our mortgage payments, though they had been in their home nearly as long as we had been in ours.
It really depends on a person’s situation. Sometimes I wish I didn’t have all my money sunk into a home, and I really don’t like the responsibility of getting a handyman or a plumber, and so forth. But I truly hated apartment living (I rented houses and not apartments as soon as it occurred to me that one could do so), and by my fiftieth birthday, ideally before that, I’ll make my last mortgage payment. (Yes, its current scheduled final payment is my fiftieth birthday!!) If I were renting, I’d still have my down payment and fix-up funds in the bank, so I’d have more ready cash. But right now my monthly outgo would be higher, eight years from now I’d still be renting, and probably in the next couple of years my rental costs would be moving up as inflation hits. And I might still not be able to have a dog. So for me buying made more sense. (I do think it’s unwise for 20-something couples to buy automatically as soon as they get married, even if they don’t have a down payment and even though the birth of children might make them need to move before they’ve built up any equity.)
Plus, in the way God works things out, one of my neighbors has given me a lot of editing work the whole time I’ve lived here–enough to pay the better part of my mortgage some years–and I would never have even met them if I hadn’t moved in here.

THORN,
I disagree. I think the Pac-TTen is under-rated. It is not that including Notre Dame makes a schedule tougher (never said that), but that scheduling a Pac-Ten team (which Notre Dame has the guts to do) makes a schedule tougher. Pac-Ten schedules are tougher not because a couple of them included ND but because they have to play each other.
But such matters are bound to the “opinion” territory.

Speaking of Science. Fiasco.
Two science teachers were “re-assigned” after mercury fiasco. And superintendent resigned. Hmmm…
Mercury stored in classroom. High school students trasported the stuff in their water bottle. Then poured it out at various locations on campus (including boys locker room), on bus, and at home–to show friends and family. One girl at the house recognized the material and they called 911.
Even the Science teacher did not recognize the material when she scooped it up off the floor from the first spill and deposited it in the trash can in the classroom. One girl in the classroom scraped it off her desk with her hand and then touched her clothes, etc.
What are they teaching Science Teachers in school?

Tiger Woods
The first report I saw was on the internet. Then we watched for any news on the TV.
They say alcohol was not involved.
His airbag was not deployed on vehicle. Wasn’t going very fast.
Hit tree and firehydrant. Wife smashed window to rescue husband. Gated security arrived 10 min. after said accident. Doesn’t seem to be any witnesses.
They said Tiger was in and out of consciousness when police arrived. Wife hovering over Tiger when they arrived. Had a few cuts on face. Went to hospital and quickly released.
Another SCENARIO could be: marital fight, husband gets in car, wife chases with golf club, smashes window causing cuts to face and disorientation of driver, crashes, wife pulls him from vehicle, police arrive. No comments from anyone about accident.
I know it is personal. None of my business. But I always like to figure out “who done it.” Stuff just doesn’t add up on this one.
If what I said is even remotely true, I hope he watches his back. He might be a two-timer or just has marital problems–which sometimes comes when lots of money is involved. But it isn’t right to kill someone just because they make you mad. Sometimes murder happens when you don’t mean to do it.

During his teaching on Galatians 6 yesterday, my pastor referenced 1 Corinthians 13:3-7. I normally prefer either KJV or NIV translations, but this version from “The Message” really hits home:
If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.
He particularly drew attention to v6, which I have italicized above, and which in the NKJV states: “does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth”

Well Joel, I think they’ve certainly had a better year in the Pac 10. But on average, theyve really had nothing more than USC and Oregon over the years. Cal every now and then, but they dont live up to expectations usually.
What they need to do is court Boise State into the Pac 10 and one other team. So they have 12 teams. The Big ten, needs to add one as well. Not having a championship game hurts those conferences.
Pretty much every team will schedule one decent out of conference game…like Bama vs VT, USC vs OSU, Auburn vs WV etc. and the rest of the non conference are usually “winable” unless you end up like MSU when Houston and GT turn out to be good or better teams…
USC isnt ever going to schedule more than one…just like most others wont. It’s too rigorous and pointless, esp when there are other teams nearby that are worth playing. It’s also more difficult to travel to the otherside of the country.

It is more like USC can’t schedule more than one. We tried for years to get Nebraska, when they were a force, but couldn’t schedule them until they were down and needed the exposure. There was a collective sigh from the SC alum when they scheduled SJSU. The Sharks? Really! At least we had Ohio State.
And granted, the Pac 10 is not this year, what it has been, so that may make it easier for SC to schedule better teams. But when you have to go undefeated to contend many schools are skiddish.
And ND used to be a big game. It is a tradition now, but even then there has been talk of dropping the domers to put a better team in that slot. Pete has said, “Any team, any time, anywhere.” Would love to get any team in the SEC to call.

Speakin’ of Tech on Saturday…
I hear that the Dawgs won the game because they didn’t let Joe Cox pass the ball…
If so, they shoulda been doin’ that all season. Then perhaps they’d have been ranked, and it wouldn’t have been such an upset.

USC-Columbia played USC-LA a few years ago when USC was independent. They played a 3-game series. USC-LA won two of them.
Carolina played a larger variety of games when they were independent. (Three games against ND, they won one) But I like the Southeastern Conference schedule better. They are a better team for joining the SEC. I suspect that joining the ACC has made Florida State less competitive nationally.

UG has had no defense most of the season, same problem last year. I doubt its a Cox issue.
I like watching GT play. Its fun watching that type of offense. They had opportunity Saturday, but couldnt come up with the play. Their outstanding wr dropped the 4th down conversion pass at the end.
I actually think Nebraska has a good chance against Texas this weekend, and Florida will edge out Bama. Both teams have good defense, but I think Florida has the better offense and experience in Tebow.
Lsu played and beat washington and ucla played and beat Tn this year. So the SEC does play the Pac 10. MSU played Oregon a few years ago, so it occurs. I think Arkansas played USC a few years ago? or am I thinking of Texas?
I will say UF has probably the weakest SEC schedule…but they still play in the SEC. I think they oughta schedule a top tier team, since FSU has been down for so long.
I have no problem witha couple of chump instate schools to play against. Cali and Florida teams do that alot. MSU is moving to that as well. It’s good for each state and with 12 game seasons, you gotta have a chump team or two that are practical bye weeks.

I’m hoping Notre Dame calls Les Miles…I want Les Miles out of the SEC..he’s an aweful coach…I hate LSU, but seriously, theyd still be top 5 this year, if not for Miles. I really shouldnt wish him on Notre Dame though…

Hmm, can I pull an anti-Drill here? Who wants to talk about football or polo or whatever these guys are discussing anyway?
Anyone have a favorite Christmas recipe? Favorite cleaning tips? Dog or cat stories? Child funnies?

Thorn,
We’ve all said it before, but we’ll all say it again, we need a playoff system in college football so that at the end of the season the champs know they are without a doubt and everyone else can deal.

Agreed, Adios. Then the PAC 10 teams could prove whether they are better than the SEC or Big 12 teams. We already know they can whoop the Big 10 in the Rose Bowl.
And besides the PAC 10 vs SEC games mentioned, a couple of years ago Arizona dared to go to Baton Rouge when LSU was #1. The Tigers tamed the Wildcats, but then I think Arizona only won 2 or 3 games that year.

Cheryl – Here’s a cat story for you…
If you may remember, my cat, Angel, was left on my neighbor’s doorstep in a box, at approx. 3 months old. You may also know (or not, not being a cat-person) that cats love boxes. They see a box, they go sit or lay in it.
Well, dear little Angel does NOT like boxes. In fact, she seems kinda scared of them. Poor thing – Kitty PTSD. (And she gets scared & startled by the littlest of things.)
Also, Angel has short legs for her size. Can you picture how cats sit upright, with their front legs against their tummy? Angel’s legs being short means she has her front legs out a few inches in front of her tummy when she sits “upright”.
I told Chrissy that Angel is kinda a “dachshund kitty”. (Though her legs aren’t exactly that kind of short – but close!)

#68: Agreed. I’d prefer those. There you go: another personality quirk about me: I’m a guy, but I’ve never liked sports. Indeed, throughout the fall especially, when it’s all anyone talks about, and the television is hogged every. single. night… I grow to hate the whole idea.

TJS – Have you seen the Hallmark commercial where the girl thinks it’s kinda weird her new boyfriend has a cat?
I heard that many women think a man with a cat must be sensitive.

Thanks for praying. I have no idea how, but we all more than survived the day. Ok, I do know how. He does not expect more from us than He provides the means to do.

Mumsee, I’m glad to hear it. Isn’t He good? I think sometimes He wants us to really know we’re beyond our own resources so that we’ll understand we really are all the time, but He provides.

I had to have a guy that liked cats. Period. That was a strict criterion, since my dad doesn’t like them, and kept our family from having them for many years after one of our cats passed.
I wanted to always have cats. So, my husband wouldn’t have made it to the potential husband stage if he hadn’t liked them.

Well, TRS, I have to have a guy who does like dogs and doesn’t like (or at least doesn’t want) cats. I once had a guy friend who had two cats, and he didn’t know that was more or less a “deal killer” for me. (If he just happened to have these cats that used to belong to a relative who died, and he didn’t care one way or another whether he had cats and they were old and wouldn’t live much longer . . . then, if I was interested in him romantically, I’d have considered the cats no major hindrance.) When I found out that he was paying thousands of dollars a year in medical care for his cats, and he had to be home at certain times of the day to give it to them, and that he considered the cats his children, that kept me from even considering our being more than friends. (It turned out there were other issues too, but that one was enough for me.)
One problem with me and cats is that I’m mildly allergic, and just not interested in taking daily medication to put up with an animal I personally wouldn’t choose as a pet. If I wasn’t allergic to cats, and they would stay off the furniture, and someone else would change the litterbox, then I might consider a husband who had one. As it is, no, I wouldn’t! And if I were interested in a guy and found out he didn’t like dogs, that would be a “deal killer,” too. Now, if we married and found out he was allergic to Misten, that would be a whole different issue–time to get rid of the dog. But if he simply doesn’t like dogs at all, we aren’t compatible. And honestly, in my mind I don’t quite trust a person who likes neither dogs nor cats; I honestly think there’s something missing in their humanity. If he likes cats but not dogs, OK, that’s fine, we just aren’t meant for each other. If he likes neither, that’s a red flag to me. (If he likes dogs, as long as they’re outside, my thought is that Misten would simply have to have another dog in order to become an outside dog–I wouldn’t just leave her outside by herself. And we’d have to live in a place where she could be an outside dog–not in a place with small yards where she’d disturb the neighbors, and not in a hot climate where her double coat would make her uncomfortable.)

Hello! Mickey Mclean! Can you answer me?
Do you know (or have you heard of) someone named Kevin Martin? He is the publisher of Gods’ World News (World for kids) last i checked, i think he lives in Asheville NC, and more importantly, he’s my uncle. So, have you?
Thanks!
