Good morning everyone. It is overcast and nippy here in the Sunny South. I have the heat in my houses set to come on when the inside tempurature is 68 degrees and it just clicked off.
I am starting to get answers to the prayer request I asked for the other day. So thank you all for that.
I may have to go to the doctor today. I have a little place on the side of my face that is oozing and I had lunch with a lady Wednesday who had just gotten out of the hospital with a staph infection on her nose. Her whole face had swollen up. Another friends mother died Thanksgiving morning from complications caused from staph getting into her heart. The Celebration of Life service is tomorrow.

Our thoughts today come from Charles Spurgeon.
Acts 18:9-10
And the Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid any longer, but go on speaking and do not be silent;for I am with you, and no man will attack you in order to harm you, for I have many people in this city.”
This should be a great encouragement to try to do good, since God has among the vilest of the vile, the most reprobate, the most debauched and drunken, an elect people who must be saved. When you take the Word to them, you do so because God has ordained you to be the messenger of life to their souls, and they must receive it, for so the decree of predestination runs. They are as much redeemed by blood as the saints before the eternal throne. They are Christ’s property, and yet perhaps they are lovers of the ale-house, and haters of holiness; but if Jesus Christ purchased them he will have them. God is not unfaithful to forget the price which his Son has paid. He will not suffer his substitution to be in any case an ineffectual, dead thing. Tens of thousands of redeemed ones are not regenerated yet, but regenerated they must be; and this is our comfort when we go forth to them with the quickening Word of God.
Nay, more, these ungodly ones are prayed for by Christ before the throne. “Neither pray I for these alone,” saith the great Intercessor, “but for them also which shall believe on me through their word.” Poor, ignorant souls, they know nothing about prayer for themselves, but Jesus prays for them. Their names are on his breastplate, and ere long they must bow their stubborn knee, breathing the penitential sigh before the throne of grace. “The time of figs is not yet.” The predestined moment has not struck; but, when it comes, they shall obey, for God will have his own; they must, for the Spirit is not to be withstood when he comes forth with fullness of power-they must become the willing servants of the living God. “My people shall be willing in the day of my power.” “He shall justify many.” “He shall see of the travail of his soul.” “I will divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong.”

It is very strange that history does seem to be cyclical. I don’t think it represents a supernatural being, but it is odd.
For example, the growing acceptance of homosexuality bears a strange (but not identical) resemblance to the civil rights movements with black people becoming accepted into our society.
Many people have noted this. I haven’t noticed (though I am sure many have observed it) that the current gradual acceptance of “medical marijuana” is something like (but not the same as) the way in which Prohibition of alcohol ended.

College Football Weekend
No one chimed in on whether to predict this week’s games, but I know you want to! Championship weekend! Too bad Oregon and Oregon state played last night to decide the PAC 10, which really wasn’t supposed to be a championship game. That game was supposed to be (IMHO) Saturday’s match between Arizona and USC. No pillow fight this week, as the worst team in D1, Western Kentucky (0-11 with a 19 game losing streak going), played last night as well. Or not as well, as the case may be, since they lost again. So, five games and a tie breaker will have to do.
Here are the games:
#1 Florida (12-0; 8-0) vs #2 Alabama (12-0; 8-0) in the SEC.
#3 Texas (12-0; 8-0) vs #22 Nebraska (9-3; 6-2) in the Big 12.
#5 Cincinnati (11-0; 6-0) @ #15 Pittsburgh (9-2; 5-1) in de-facto Big East championship.
#10 Georgia Tech (10-2; 7-1) vs. Clemson (8-4; 6-2) in the ACC
#21 Houston (10-2; 6-2) @ East Carolina (8-4; 7-1) in the C-USA
Tie breaker: Arizona (7-4; 5-3) @ #18 USC (8-3; 5-3) in what should have been the de-facto PAC 10 title game.

Of course there was growing acceptance of immolating children in ancient Canaan as that culture evolved 3000 years or so ago.
And on the fourth planet out in the Cygnus star system, there exists an ancient culture where there has (reportedly) been growing acceptance of wearing baskets of rotten fruit strapped on top of the head.
This must mean that immolating children and wearing baskets of rotten fruit are okay.

A suggested 28th amendment I just got in an e-mail. Sounds good to me.
-
This is a great idea. Only need 3/4 of the State Legislatures to pass this to become law…AND IT IS VETO PROOF including no appeal to the Supreme Court.
Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution:
“Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives, and Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States “.

But yet you come here everyday. We’re unworthy of your love, but worthy of your disdain and ridicule. That says way more about you than us.
And seriously, one is about color, which you can’t control. The other is about who you like to boink. They don’t compare at all. That’s comparing apples to teenage mutant ninja turtles. I’m reading in Daniel these days and got to wondering about the history of the Middle East circa 400 BC to Jesus’ arrival. Can anyone recommend a well-written lay reader’s version about that time period? I’m thinking even a “for dummies” book would be good . . .

I read the book Terry Anderson wrote about his “confinement,” as well as Terry Waite’s book–Waite also was locked up for a long time.
I thought Anderson, the skeptical journalist, came away in a healthier spiritual state of mind than the professional clergyman Waite.
Waite tells about the glorious day his captors got him an English book to read–he tore the blindfold off and began laughing. His captors didn’t speak English so they apparently picked up the first book they could find: a history of World War II prison escapes . . .
(As an aside, Waite’s book Travels with a Primate–about his time accompanying the Archbishop of Canterbury around the world–was funny and enjoyable to read).
Now I’m curious. I’ll have to google both men and find out how they’re doing now.

We had a tragedy here in Sonoma County last weekend. A 19 year-old drank alone in a bar for a couple hours, then got into his mini-Cooper and drove like a madman. He sped through a red light and broadsided a mini-van carrying a four-member family home from their Hawaiian vacation. All five died.
The family also included a college freshman who had been visiting her mother and didn’t go to Hawaii. She alone survives.
Three or four nights later, the family’s home was trashed by a burglary. The burglers even stole the remaining car–along with jewelry, blue ray, computer, FINANCIAL records, toys, etc.
The community was horrified and the burglers were picked up southwest of San Francisco pretty much the next day.
Main burgler is a 26 year old who has spent most of the last five years in prison. He has three illegitimate children. A jail interview–which is splashed on the front page of our local paper and headlined with “I am not a monster”–has him insisting that he feels terrible for the surviving child and if he had know he wouldn’t have done it.
“I wouldn’t have hurt her for the world.”
You’ll not be surprised to hear he’s pleading innocent.
What boggles my mind is his insistence that this was a case of mistaken burglary. He “was told the house was empty, not what happened.”
So what? He still ransacked a house and stole possessions.

Congress treats itself very differently. They tie their salary increases to general fed employees while denying federal judges the same increases. I think it should be a public question every two years. The judges and the congresspeople all hire the people they want — and no one requires them to be fair and honest about it. Just look at their statistics, especially the judges. If a business tried to do what these people do, they’d be hailed into court, fined, etc., etc.

Reminds me of when I lived in Arizona and more people kept moving there from large cities like New York and LA. Both Phoenix and Tucson had terrible infrastructure for the increased traffic, so the cities were discussing freeway systems. There was a bumper sticker going around that said “Don’t Californicate Arizona”.
Also, in those days, Oregon (or maybe it was Seattle) had an influx from the south. I think they had an ad campaign that said “People in Oregon don’t tan, they rust”.

News2me: I do not know anything about Nanowrimo. It sounds like some kind of virus a doctor might claim is causing a patient’s fever. But I will look it up. Thanks.
PeterL: Actually I dropped a tree on my main tractor the other day. There was some kind of transient local anomaly in the Earth’s gravitational field just as I was cutting down this big tree. I had parked the tractor, carefully noting that the tree had a very pronounced lean in the OPPOSITE direction, i.e. 180 degrees AWAY from my tractor.
So I happily sawed through 9/10 of the tree when all of a sudden the universe sort of burped and gravity was temporarily suspended in the vicinity of this tree.
Well, the tree shook itself free, literally walked 180 degrees around the stump, and then (gravity apparently reasserting itself) toppled slowly and majestically onto my tractor.
Old timers around here tell me that a tree will do this sort of thing when it has a twist in the grain.
Personally, I blame it on the CERN Super-Collider Machine in Europe that they just spun up again this week.
I think it is causing some serious perturbations in gravity.
For instance, I notice that I keep getting heavier, inexplicably.
Obviously something is wrong with gravity.

I send my dog out to do her duty without me. That is the best way.
However, my dog would like to register a complaint. She is the ONLY individual in the household who has to go out into the rain, the cold, the snow, the mud, etc. to go to the bathroom. Even the “evil” cats get to stay inside to do their duty.
My dog would like to point out that this is discrimination of the very worst kind.
If any other dogs would like to join her, she is ready to picket Washington DC over the matter! (At least until she gets hungry and wants petted.)

Nothing’s wrong with Oregon, TRS. It’s just that Arizona is the only PAC 10 team which has not played in the Rose Bowl. Whenever they get good, someone beats them towards the end of the season and spoils our hope. This year, it was Oregon. Had Arizona beaten Oregon, then tomorrow would be the game for them to win the PAC 10 title. As it is, they will get 2nd place at best.

TRS (and other dog owners), I have a question. My sister made lamb chops the other day and the dog went crazy. It was a sort of, “I’m scared” kind of crazy. He wouldn’t even go through the kitchen en route to the back door to go outside. She had to leash him to just get him to the door. Any ideas?

Conan, # 19 & 39. It wasn’t hard to find some examples. There are others. Essentially, the laws don’t apply to them.
Critics of congressional exemptions point to two other laws that they believe should apply to Congress — the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)54 does not apply to Congress, and congressional coverage under this measure would raise different issues from those posed by the application to Congress of the civil rights, labor, or other laws discussed above.55
The principal financial conflict of interest law for Federal employees, 18 U.S. Code 208, prohibits officers and employees of the executive branch from taking official governmental action on any matter in which they have any personal financial interest. Government officials are barred from participating in any matters in which they have any personal financial interest. The statute does not apply to any elected officials of the Federal Government, so Members of Congress, the President, the Vice President, and Federal judges are exempt.
Section 209 of 18 U.S. Code prohibits employees of the executive branch of government from receiving private compensation or salary supplementation for their government work or as payment for activities within the scope of their official governmental duties. The statute does not apply to Members of Congress, legislative branch employees, the President, Vice President, or Federal judges.
Other Federal laws do not apply to Congress, such as Title VI of the 1964 Act prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in “any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”88 Similarly, the 1975 Age Discrimination Act bans all arbitrary age distinctions in the operation of Federally assisted programs aid. The Constitution makes Congress the originator of all Federal appropriations, yet no court to date has viewed Congress as a “recipient” of Federal financial assistance subject to application of these laws.

Gents: It, sadly, IS true that some ladies are HARD cases.
One smooch and wink, however suavely done, simply won’t work with them.
So what you got to do in such cases is send up an entire defensive rapid-fire BARRAGE of smooches and winks.
It confuses and disorients them, long enough for you to get clean away.

#16 – Chas, anything that can be done to put restrictions on our so called representatives and make them realize that if they choose to pass something into law that they will also have to live with it (i.e. health care – you want a public option, fantastic you get that same insurance and get to go to the same medical clinics as everybody else; Cap and Tax – fantastic, you vote to increase all of our energy bills and cap the amount of mileage our salesman can drive then you just voted that you park your airplane Madame Pelosi and you get to drive to CA in a Prius and once you have gone over the capped amount of miles that my salesman can drive, park the Prius whereever you happen to be – God willing it will be in Kansas somewhere with no cell service so we don’t have to hear from you for a month; and I could keep going on and on say with Medicare – you choose to cut Medicare benefits, then fantastic Sen Byrd you are now on Medicare, good luck staying healthy).

Yeah, my post was deleted – not my imagination – you can tell by the discontinuity in the referenced post numbers.
I have posted here since the first month of this blogs existence. I have never had a post deleted before, and there have been hundreds. I do not believe my post violated any rule. All I have done is criticized this site and compared it to others, in the hope that you would regain your old relevance in a very competitive environment that is nonetheless full of opportunity, as I demonstrated.
I am not happy.
Roger – think about it – they deleted my post. How many posts go untouched? We can discuss everything civilly, except World itself.
I expect them to do more than repeat what they read on the wire, regardless of how often they print. But they sometimes don’t even vet what they read on the wire. This blog is not bi-weekly.
I expect them to be able to take criticism. They could have waited for someone like you to defend them. No, they don’t want people redirected to more relevant sites.

Well, I WOULD cook but both my wife and the local Fire Department are quite insistent that I NOT cook, for some reason probably related to an unfortunate incident a number of years ago involving a meat loaf explosion.

Re the missing post: Ah. When I first came on here, another post was #1 and even made note of being number 1, so it looked to me like it probably had been there a while. In all my years here, I’ve never seen one removed for criticizing WORLD, and would personally doubt this was a first. I’m sorry it disappeared for a time, though.

First, let me say this: I have no connection to the WMB authorities/editors, EXCEPT that they occasionally (and for mysterious reasons) email me to warn me about being too creative with colorful adjectives and clinically descriptive phrases.
But, in their defense – I am pretty sure that this blog maintenance is only a relatively SMALL part of what they have to do in the globe-straddling World Magazine Publishing Empire; so they aren’t always right on top of every situation and they have some automatic firewalls and checks built in, which sometimes slows down or hiccups a given post.
Also, I don’t THINK they are really full-time investigative reporters, as it were. And so sometimes they are naturally ‘behind’ other more politically intense blogs on a given topic – and sometimes just don’t cover it. And they do have Whirled Views for those of us who are permanently aggrieved about this or that.
I like WMB. It is the only blog I post on. I have actually NEVER posted on any other blog.
I think they (the overseers of WMB) do a very credible job.
I just wish they were more flexible about adjectives, especially the really juicy, old-fashioned kind of adjectival phrases.
You know – the grand old type of adjectival phrase that brings conversation to a complete halt all over the ballroom, makes the band stop playing, and causes a stampede for the exit.

Chas #16: I don’t really see the point of that amendment, but I do have suggestions for the 28th and 29th amendments:
(28): Term limits. For the House of Representatives, no one would be allowed to be elected to more than three terms in a row, and no more than 6 terms total. For the Senate, allow no more than 3 total terms.
To get this amendment passed, make it apply to none of the sitting Senators and Representatives at time of ratification. I know, double standard, but it would offer a better chance to get the amendment passed.
(29): Line-item veto for appropriations. The president should be able to veto anything that appears as a line item, meaning that he could eliminate funding at any level it appears in a bill. Line-item vetos could be overrided by a 3/4″ vote of Congress. (Vetos of full bills would still be overridden by a 2/3″ vote). And the president should be able to reduce appropriations, either selectively or across the board, with no restrictions except for notification of Congress. (This is patterned after the powers of the Alaska governor).
I have an idea for a 30th amendment as well: Eliminate gerrymandering of congressional districts.
There could be two ways to do this: Iowas’s method, where a nonpartisan board draws up the districts without regard for anything other than population equality and unity of counties and cities. Location of incumbents, political party proportions, and previous boundaries would strictly be forbidden to be considered.
Or, you could do what Ohio tried to do in a 2005 referendum (it failed to pass): Create an independent commission to create new boundaries geared toward maximum competitiveness, sort of a “reverse gerrymander.” A complex mathematical formula would be used to determine these boundaries.

Nope, Drill. You’re wrong. The managers of WORLD blog actually do have time to keep on top of every news story in the whole universe, big or small, that could possibly be of any interest to any poster on here. They have the travel budget too. But they squander every dime, by their own choice, by taking all that money and spending it on junk food so that they can sit here and read every post any of us writes, and every word on any website any of us links to, so that they can quietly throw out any with which they disagree.
It has actually happened thousands of times these last few years; they just never got caught before.

1. It might be a mistake. It’s not like them to just delete. Maybe they couldn’t get it back and thought you might just repost.
2. Do you go to any other sites and demand they write articles on certain things?
(Even so, I don’t think they would delete for that. Others have demanded they talk about certain things and they didn’t get deleted.)
3. Does every news media cover everything? And if they do, this isn’t as big as a large media co. so how can they cover everything that everyone wants them to cover?
4. Can’t you just repost the links?
If you go to the home page of World Mag., they post a lot of different articles–some from the AP.

NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month
Our daughter has been doing this for about 3 years.
It’s for all ages.
The kids get together on weekends and write and encourage each other to write, and the older people get together and write and encourage each other to write.
The goal is to write a certain number of words for the month. You download your words to the site each day. (Your words cannot be read by anyone else.) It’s all about getting people to write.
They don’t care what you write. Just write.
You have lots of words. Just thought it might be your thing.
They also do the same for writing scripts–different month.
