Empire State Building won’t shine for Mother Teresa
New York’s emblematic building has shined for a number of reasons – holidays, dog shows, cancer charities and even the 60th anniversary of communist China – but the Empire State Building declined to shine for Mother Teresa, AP reports.
The Catholic League requested the building to light up in honor of the centennial of Mother Teresa’s birth on Aug. 26, but the Empire State Building officials have denied the request without explanation.
Now, New York City Council members are speaking out against the denial: Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez and Peter Vallone plan on calling on the building to honor Mother Teresa at a City Hall press conference Wednesday.
“Although we may not universally agree on all of her opinions and actions, Mother Teresa was undoubtedly an example of moral fortitude and self-sacrifice that we can all learn from,” said Rodriguez.
In 1985, Mother Teresa opened “Gift of Love,” a house for AIDS patients in New York.

Well, I’m sure they’ll find some sleazebag to honor. What a world when someone who devoted herself to others is passed over.

Well, it’s his building but what an idiot move. Does he have any idea how many Catholics there are in New York?

Malkin isn’t running for anything in NY. But I suspect God will take care of him in His own way.

Let me see if I have this strait. Catholics want a private company to spend money to honor a Catholic Icon, and because they declined, they’re Anti Catholic Bigots!
But hey, why stop there! The Empire State Building Co. are bigots toward every group whose lighting requests have ever been denied! I’m sure there are tens, if not hundreds, of individuals and organizations who have been victims of this evil companies’ animus and bigotry!
The only reason we’re hearing about this is because Christians are world class whiners when they don’t get their way.

The Empire State Building honors people and spends that money on a regular basis. There’s something wrong with a company that will spend that money on a dog show, but not someone who worked all her life to help people in need.

The Catholic League may be disappointed but you can be sure that Mother Teresa doesn’t care.

5. Especially considering they honored a regime that murdered millions of people. But it is a private company and their bonehead decision.

Chas, good point. Take the money they were going to give to this idiot and give it to her order.

Chicago had its own building that lit up for every occasion, or at least several of them. We had several that went red and green for Christmas, but this also did red, white, and blue for Fourth of July and an eerie orange and black for Halloween, and I think a few more. I was once with a small group of people heading out for lunch, and George Grant was among us (I was editing him at the time). He looked up at that building, which as I recall wasn’t lit up for anything right then, and said, “That is the most pagan building I’ve seen in America.” I don’t understand architecture and didn’t understand what he meant, but it sent chills down me nonetheless because of having seen it in its ominous Halloween dress. I’m wondering if the New York building might be an equivalent, and honoring a Catholic isn’t exactly on their list of favorite things to do.

If she were still alive, I don’t think Mother Teresa would mind or care that the biggest building in New York doesn’t commemorate her. Why are we offended when the ultimate in hubris refuses to recognize the ultimate in humility? Why are we offended over something for Mother Teresa when she herself would not be offended? The philosophies between these two couldn’t be more opposite. Let’s keep it that way. Mother Teresa’s memory doesn’t need this recognition, nor does it need to be contaminated by its endorsement. Friendship with the world is enmity toward God.

Oh good. Another non-issue. Let’s have a really heated conversation that gradually turns into an argument about gay marriage and/or abortion!

Why don’t they use the lights to form a picture of Mohammed?
