Sneak peek: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader trailer
Big news for Narnia fans—Aslan is on the move. With the third film in the Chronicles franchise, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, set to hit theaters on Dec. 10, WORLD has your first look at the trailer.
The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader Official Teaser Trailer
If you’re anything like me, seeing scenes you loved in the novel so well-rendered in this early peek will come as a welcome relief—especially after it looked like Hollywood had given up on C.S. Lewis’ classic series.
In 2008 Disney dropped the project over budget disagreements with Walden Media and because the second film in the lineup, Prince Caspian, failed to perform up to expectations. But 20th Century Fox immediately picked it up with plans to release it under the Fox Walden banner.
Naturally, neither Walden nor Fox has divulged details of the production budget, but given that Walden walked away from the Mouse House because it was unwilling to go above $100 million, we can safely assume Dawn Treader will tally well above that figure by the end of production. (By comparison, according to Box Office Mojo, the third Harry Potter movie, Prisoner of Azkaban, cost around $130 million to make.)
While I’m thrilled that Fox is willing to invest enough cash to make Dawn Treader a worthy competitor for other children’s fantasy films, I’m more encouraged by the new strategy the studio says it’s embracing. That is, sticking to the story as C.S. Lewis wrote it and leaving in place the spiritual themes that inspired him.
To emphasize its commitment to Christian audiences, Fox is allowing a select group of faith-based publications like WORLD to post the trailer not only before it goes into theaters on June 18, but also before mainstream outlets like Entertainment Tonight get it. Hope you enjoy it, and let us know what you think.

My 4 kids will be thrilled to know this movie will be out by Christmas.
The Trailer looks like the Movie will be everything that we hope it will be.
We have so looked forward to the next one in the series. Hopefully they will continue to make movies of each of the books, would love to see the Silver Chair, and A boy and His Horse, the Last Battle, and even the Magician’s Nephew.
I hope that the movie industry will take notice that audiences want family films that are child friendly. We see and hear enough ugly-ness. It is refreshing to find something that is acceptable to take the children out to see.
I’d love to take the kids on Thanksgiving Day if the movie is released by then!!!!

This will be the Christmas family movie this year! My oldest has read the entire series time and time again as well as listened to them on CD. We love Narnia and C.S. Lewis! Thank you Walden Media!

Wow! What wonderful news about Walden Media sticking to CS Lewis’ original intent. Isn’t it emboldening to hear about a company that fights to stand for principle? As for the movie…..
this Dawn Treader will tread the Christmas movie waters very well indeed!

Has Fox/Walden learned what they ought to know by now? When turning books as well-loved as Narnia into films, STICK TO THE STORY, CHARACTERS, AND THEME of the author! We might understand a little fudging in order to turn a book’s pacing into an exciting movie, but significant changes only irritate (and lose) the primary audience. We’ll see in December if the screenwriters, producers, and directors love the book as much as we do.

Very, very encouraging news. I can’t watch the trailer on this computer, but I think I’ll bug my roomie later to watch it on hers!

Just to be contrary:
The problem isn’t so much that the movies haven’t stuck to the story – The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was rather faithful to the story, but emphasized the wrong parts of the story as the climax. The problem has been ignorance of the themes of the story. One can rearrange details or flesh out characters on screen in ways that the book doesn’t do, but if one departs from the themes of the Narnia series, one loses the soul of Narnia. Prince Caspian lost this entirely, and became a story of revolution and not a story of restoration.
Here’s to hoping that The Dawn Treader regains Narnia’s soul.

Looking forward to this one!

Well, December is still six months away. Perhaps I should convince D3 to read the books before then and then reward her with the movie? So far, she has refused to read them, mainly because her cousin did not like them. Oh, well.

Peter, It seems to me like reading a couple of chapters of LWW aloud may help your daughter get interested. I actually know a person who learned to read in fifth grade (he had bad dyslexia) because the teacher read LWW aloud. He knew there were other books in the series, and was expecting the teacher to read those as well, and the teacher wisely said no, if you want to know what they say, you have to read them yourself. He never did learn to read fast, but was an avid reader when I knew him in college and a few years afterward. And he had a great deal of affection for that series.

Dawn Treader is my favorite book in the series after Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, so I look forward to seeing this movie!

Please tell me there’s not a gratuitous mystical Arwen character thrown in.

Rumor has it that they’re sticking fairly close to the story on this one, which is good. Let’s hope it’s well-received so that “The Silver Chair” gets green-lit. That’s when the fun really starts!

Three cheers for Walden Media in bringing out another episode from Narnia. Something else to look forward to for Christmas 2010.

I always liked The Horse and His Boy, The Magician’s Nephew, and The Last Battle the most, I think, except for Susan’s fate.
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was cool, though. The trailer seems promising: I even saw a bit that seemed to be Lucy with the wizard’s book? I think it was mentioned on the last thread that that would be a difficult scene to include.

My first few readings of the series, this and Silver Chair were probably my least favorites, but I’ve learned to love this one (and, less so, SC). My favorites are probably LWW and Magician’s Nephew, though. Horse and His Boy is the only one that doesn’t “advance the plot,” though, and so I’ve been known to skip it when I read the series.
And I really don’t like The Last Battle very much. It’s too sad and violent to make up for the lovely parts, and I don’t find “the new Narnia” satisfying. (The “come up higher” just sounds like someone urging me to run faster, and as the one who was always slowest in my class in school, even the fact that this running is effortless doesn’t make up for the fact of someone telling you to run. I don’t find “Hurry, hurry” inviting. I just don’t.)
But when I read the series, I do usually read every book, usually in chronological order.

The Silver Chair was my favorite book in the series: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader my second favorite. I never liked The Last Battle, though. I was disapointed with the story ending like that and wanted Narnia to go on for thousands and thousands of years, rather like Jill.

Sounds Great! I am SOOOO looking forward to this one!! I wish we didn’t have to wait until Dec…

Interesting that Peter and Susan appear in the movie, and that when Lucy sees herself as beautiful, it is Susan she sees in the mirror.
This is perhaps my least favorite of the books, but the trailer looks promising and our family is definitely looking forward to this movie.
