Newsweek on the Apocalypse
Somebody had to say it. And it struck me as ironic that it was a heathen magazine like Newsweek that said it first. Except for the last line of copy, I should think this would make a fine cover for a Christian publication about now.
To be sure, the heathen media don’t mean a word of it. It’s OK for them to talk about the “Apocalypse” as long as they know that you know they just mean it metaphorically; they were winking when they wrote it. What Newsweek’s editors meant to say is that if they ever did believe in God, this sure would look like what the Bible says to expect. But they are educated, so they know there are reasonable explanations for why the world is going so crazy. Right?
Now we Christians, on the other hand, do believe in God. We are principally committed to the idea of an Apocalypse. (By the way, Wikipedia, while not my only source of theological truth, defines “Apocalypse” as follows: “a disclosure of something hidden from the majority of mankind in an era dominated by falsehood and misconception.” That’s not bad.) But we got pretty tired of centuries of Nostradamus types who thought they figured out the exact date of the Second Coming. So nowadays we obviate embarrassment by not talking about the Apocalypse at all.
This leaves the job to Newsweek. They somehow managed to devote an entire double issue to the crazy gyrations of geological and political mayhem without giving a passing thought to the God of the Apocalypse. That’s not exactly all-things-considered. But something tells me that somewhere in the bowels of the magazine’s headquarters, a few overeducated writers are shaking in their Rockports and whistling in the dark.

Speaking of Apocalypse, you may want to read this.

I read the paper and all I can think is, “the emperor has no clothes.” The world is fiddling blindly and wondering why the temperature seems to be going up.

We all to varying degrees “whistle in the dark”. Whether it be be blindness to the consequences of addictions, financial foolishness, lack of health discipline, etc. All who see the looming disasters wonder what it will take to open blind eyes to the reality. It should prompt weeping to realize the deep hostility of our natural man to the rule of God. And it should prompt great joy to realize the Awesome Grace of God to save some from the awful cataclysm of our own making. Of course there are those who scoff at even the mention of either God’s judgment or His blessing. Only the very appearance of Jesus Christ Himself will prompt their knee to bow, and even then it will be with clenched teeth and cold heart, further demonstrating the rightness of the judgment of God. The prospect should lead the rescued to, with Paul, beg others to be reconciled to Christ.

Do you really think all will bow their knee with clenched teeth? I’m thinking that there will be a percentage who have gotten far enough in their journey to begin submitting their life to God but haven’t been able to believe in Jesus as Lord yet because of the tremendous pressure not to by our culture. Those people may, at the moment they experience the second coming, welcome it with a glad, believing heart. But there will certainly be a good portion who will resent this judgment of God.

May the eyes of our prodigal sons & daughters be opened to see the signs of the times, & to believe again what they once knew to be true.

Or maybe I should say, “…believe again in the One they once knew to be True.”

Heathen meanings were here before Christian meanings, which are not much of an improvement, according to people like Edward Gibbon. Apocalypse is one of the original Christian contributions to meaning, but, not a very nice one, and nothing to be proud of.
Oh for happy metamorphosis.

If they knew what they were writing about, they’d know that Christ said these things are only the beginning of our troubles.
Edward Gibbon and his opinion are man’s view, not Christ’s. Who ya gonna trust?
(Well, we know who Scroopy is going to trust.)

Any “heathen” spin, contradictory to infallible Biblical revelation, is worthless. Simply dump it.
Hopefully, Eddy showed some courage, for the first time in his life, and got His life right with the King of Kings, at the end.
Sometimes there are those that mock, and count on the death bed confession, but..uh oh..unexpected surprises..
“And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” (2Th 2:11-12)
Get in the ark.
The back-slapping, Thursday evening, atheist support group, bingo times, will have to wrap it up soon, due to demise.

It’s kinda funny to read the top of that cover too.
“How ignorant are you?” They’re pretty ignorant about the Apocalypse, evidently.

Preaching in the fifties was “Hell, Fire and Brimstone”. Today’s preaching is “Be Positive”. What will the two witnesses mentioned in Rev be preaching?
3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
Rev 11:3 (KJV)

Buddy: Excellent question. There is a lot of lolly pop Christianity being preached from lukewarm pulpits.
If people really know the Lord, they know that He is a Holy God and that He hates sin. It is only the Precious Blood of Jesus that cleanses us from sin.
Hebrews 12: 29: “For our God is a consuming fire.”

Aren’t there any postmillennialists on staff at World Magazine?

It is interesting that the “Wise” seem to have all the answers, and also comment on the ignorance of others. The word “Revelation” also means, and originally read “…the Revealing of Jesus the Christ…”. It does not indicate that He returns – He is revealed !
The mysteries of the Kingdom are hidden from the wise, and revealed to the children. If you are a “child” then you know the Truth – the one that sets you free – and you also know that in prophsey what is shown in the physical actualy takes place in the spirit realm, and is only symbolic of what will actually take place. Until we know the Truth, we are just as ignorant as the remainder of the population.
I would be willing to bet all I have that none can answer the following:
Tell me what is meant by being “born again” without quoting scriptures or refering to quotes from Bible.

“Tell me what is meant by being “born again” without quoting scriptures or refering to quotes from Bible.”
Tell me what is meant by your sentence without using English…

So, Bealman, you don’t believe Jesus when he says he will surely come again? He was lying?
Report comment to moderator
Why would anyone want to define “born again” without referencing Scripture?
Why waste time?
