Ok. I see you’re all neglecting your duty to get this thread on the move. So I’ll step in and be first. It’s a heavy responsibility, but somebody’s got to do it. :–)

Good Morning everyone. I am headed to the beach this morning to work. Hopefully I can convince the man I have worked with for almost two years to actually make an offer on a condo today.
Remember that banks are EVIL. An incompetent loan processor has once again screwed up a closing I am supposed to have Monday. She got it in her head that they closing was supposed to be Wednesday and now she wants to see my clients 2011 tax returns. How man of you have yours done?

Good morning.
WHY, HOW can she ask for that if the filing date isn’t April 15,17th this year? Makes no sense. Aaaaaaahhhhh!
On a more positive note, I received an email from my agency, which is technically my employer, congratulating me on my promotion and please let me have your username and password so they can change my online timesheet. Can’t wait until Monday to find out what happened to me! If anything. So, I guess this would be a rave, if it’s true.

Now just imagine for a minute after reading this, what would happen if these were a Christian judge and perp instead of a muslim judge and perp. The outrage from the left would be earshattering.
http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/291921/sharia-court-pennsylvania-transcript-andrew-c-mccarthy
“I have made a transcript of the Pennsylvania case in which state judge Mark Martin, a Muslim convert and U.S. Army reservist who served in Iraq, relied on a sharia law defense (as well as some evidentiary contortions) to dismiss an open-and-shut harassment case against a Muslim man who assaulted an atheist activist at a Halloween parade. (See my earlier post.)
The victim, Ernest Perce, wore a “Zombie Mohammed” costume and pretended to walk among the dead (in the company of an associate who was the “Zombie Pope” — and who, you’ll be shocked to learn, was not assaulted). The assailant, Talag Elbayomy, a Muslim immigrant, physically attacked Perce, attempted to pull his sign off, and, according to police, admitted what he had done right after the incident. The defense argued that Elbayomy believed it was a crime to insult the prophet Mohammed (it is, under sharia law), and that because he was in the company of his children, he had to act to end this provocation and set an example about defending Islam.
As you will see, Judge Martin did not lecture the defendant about free speech or how disputes are resolved in a civilized country. He instead dressed the victim down for failing to appreciate how sensitive Muslims — including the judge himself — are about Islam. The audio of Judge Martin’s remarks can be heard on YouTube (The audio, beginning at around the 2-minute mark on the YouTube clip, lasts about 7 minutes. Martin has reportedly threatened to hold Perce in contempt for recording and publishing the judge’s statements, which were made in open court. Perce says he had permission to make a recording as long as it was only audio, not video.) Here is the transcript:”

Is Whitney asking what’s going on because of recent, err, discussions? Or is it just a friendly inquiry into our lives? I agree with Donna and lay the recent tension at the feet of politics. I don’t know how you all can stand it. Our campaigns last a couple of months and by the end of them everyone is a ball of nerves, but two years, and every two years! No wonder you are on edge – I’m even starting to feel uptight.

After shredding me in James, our Bible study is now moving over to Jude. Tell me what you make of verses 5-8:
5 But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.
6 And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;
7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
8 Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.”
It appears to me that even though people in the Old Testament were “saved,” they lost their place with God when they returned to their former lives or rejected God’s authority in their lives, later.
(I tell my ladies you cannot lose your salvation, but you can deliberately throw it away).
Would you say that’s a fair reading of the text?
And if so, what do you make of verse 8? Who are the dreamers? What does it mean to reject authority–only God’s or those in authority over you? And should any of us be speaking evil of dignitaries?
And who are dignitaries?
I’m off to work the lesson!

“Police arrested a Kitchener, Ont., father outside his daughter’s school because the four-year-old drew a picture of him holding a gun.
Jessie Sansone told the Record newspaper that he was in shock when he was arrested Wednesday and taken to a police station for questioning over the drawing. He was also strip-searched.
“This is completely insane. My daughter drew a gun on a piece of paper at school,” he said.
Officials told the newspaper the move was necessary to ensure there were no guns accessible by children in the family’s home. They also said comments by Sansone’s daughter, Neaveh, that the man holding the gun in the picture was her dad and “he uses it to shoot bad guys and monsters,” was concerning.”
Don’t drink whatever it was these people had.

Michelle @17 – I don’t think it is talking of losing salvation there, but about what Christ said in Matthew 7:15-23, “By their fruits ye shall know them.” In other words, these people outwardly claim salvation, but their life completely contradicts their words. That they aren’t really saved is confirmed by Jude 4 “For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men,…”
II Peter 2 is a very good cross reference for Jude. My pastor taught on Jude once, and he said that ‘dignities’ (vs.8) were both earthly and heavenly powers. Verse 9 & 10 expand on the idea. The whole description sounds a lot like those televangalists who claim to cast out devils and hear God speaking, yet their lives are completely ungodly – like the reports about TBN that someone posted yesterday.

Since Emily works weekends, I will be babysitting my adorable-cute grandson later today, & after church on Sunday.
Speaking of the adorable-cutie pie, who turns 16-months old today, he has been surprising us with things he knows.
Emily was looking for her brush, saying, “Where did my hairbrush go?” Forrest went running into the kitchen, found the hairbrush on the counter, & took it to her.
Today, Emily & Chrissy are both doing some cooking. Forrest ran off with a spatula & tossed it over the gate into my room. Later, when Emily wondered aloud where the spatula was, Forrest ran over to the gate, reached through to pick it up, & took it to her.
How many 16-month olds know what a spatula, of all things, is? I told the girls that I no longer assume he doesn’t know what I’m talking about.
Besides being super-cute & super-smart, Forrest is also super-sweet. (I sound like a teenage girl with all these “supers”, don’t I?)

kbells @26: I don’t know – Why was I put in a locked room and repeatedly accused of lying when I went to visit Mumsee? Mumsee, one of my husband’s favorite stories of when his girls were little: one night one of them awoke with a nightmare. He remembered that his mom had told him that it never helped to comfort him when he had a nightmare, and he knew it hadn’t helped this daughter in the past, so he mentally decided what he’d do instead.
He strode into the bedroom and said, “OK, monsters, you’ve had your fun, and you scared her. Now get out, and don’t come back,” and he made a sweeping motion toward the door. It worked.
Mumsee, I did wonder momentarily about Phos’s first paragraph–wow, what a way to treat houseguests who come to help!

Hubby still needs prayer, he has tough decisions. They really want him in Scotland (it is nice to be wanted) and it would be a neat experience for the family, but it puts a very large burden on his wife’s shoulders as all of the homeschooling and discipline and chauffering and directing would fall upon her. Will she hold out? Is this God’s direction? Will the family hold together under the stress? Will the two new boys fit in and help to make it work or will they need too much at this stage? It is working where we are, but what an opportunity. If God wants us there, He will be with us and give the needed whatever. Decisions, decisions…

Karen – I was in shock, because I was exhausted – then I was angry, because they were really unpleasant to me – then I just prayed. They had given a Catch-22, either you admit you’re lying about just visiting friends, or we’ll ban you from the States for life.
So I prayed, that even though there was no prospect they were going to let me go across the border that night, that they would let me go anyway, and God answered that prayer. I had missed my flight as a result of the delay, but the clerk just booked me for the next one (which is why I ended up in JFK). NJL, that would seem a no brainer. We both like Scotland, it is the only country we can think of where we would agree to even attempt this. But, in reality, we have eleven children with “”issues” and you never know when those “issues” might pop up. They are great children and are doing really well, do we really want to rock their boat? Many time zones away so there is jet lag. Culture shock will kick in at six weeks and again at six months. Several struggle with depression already. Several thrive on very solid consistency. Ten year old can rarely do schoolwork on Monday after the one day off of Sunday. She takes a day to recover. How long will it take her with a trip like that? She is one of many with that challenge. Several of them need very individualized school work. Am I up to that challenge? Will we find any willing helpers over there? Our general leaning is, yes, step out in faith and let God provide all of our needs as He has already done. But He has already provided us with a tremendous situation right here. Is it possible He wants us to set it aside and begin anew?

PET POST!!!!!!
Who’s a good kitty!
http://hotair.com/archives/2012/02/25/awww-newly-adopted-cat-saves-owners-life/
“Time for your weekend break from politics. Most of us are, by now, familiar with the idea of “seizure dogs” and “therapy dogs” who assist owners with special medical needs. But a seizure cat? Keep this in mind if you’re ever considering rescuing a feline from the local shelter. From Wisconsin.
Amy Jung and her son, Ethan Jung, originally went to the Door County Humane Society on Feb. 8 to play with the cats, not to bring one home. Then Jung, 36, saw Pudding lying on a counter. She made a quick decision to adopt Pudding and his pal Wimsy.
At around 9:30 p.m., she went to bed and about 1½ hours later, the prodigious kitty came to her rescue.
Jung, who was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 4, started to have a seizure. According to Jung, Pudding planted his weight on her chest and, when he could not wake her, began swatting her face and biting her nose.
“Anything he could to pull me out of it (the seizure),” she said.
Unfortunately, just waking up wasn’t enough. The woman couldn’t make it out of bed or awaken her son Ethan to help her by yelling. So the cat rushed into Ethan’s room, jumped on his head and woke him up. They called for medical help and the woman was saved. (One sad note for Ethan… the cat weighs 22 pounds, which would probably wake up anyone.)”
Fat cats rule!

Every week when I prepare for my Adult Sunday School Lesson, i go to Bible Gateway.com.
http://www.biblegateway.com
I go to the book and chapter and read it in several versions. I use New American Standard, English Standard Version, NIV 1984 first then sometimes go to the JB Phillips New Testament. I like reading the different versions and then go to the cross references.
After a while, reading the different versions I start to see the different ways of translating; the different ways of interpreting what is in the Bible. I also often see the common ways of understanding that lead to true and correct interpretation.
I see that you used the New King James version. All my choices use the word “saved” or a form of saved, except the NIV 1984, that use the wording “the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt instead. When the word “saved” is used,
The Lord or Jesus is the choice. Hmmm! Very interesting!
God “delivered” his people, Jesus “saved” them. I am Baptist; Once saved Always saved! I see no problem.
“(I tell my ladies you cannot lose your salvation, but you can deliberately throw it away).” Hebrews 13:5
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
I am not able to force God out, who is?
“The Dreamers” in verse 8 seem to me to be the “certain men”…”ungodly men” of verse 4. The next verses are examples of “ungodly men” and fallen angels the all the Jews would have known about.
I like to read the different versions. I like to remember the rules of English about subject/ verb usage and agreement. I like to pay attention to who the later nouns, and pronouns are referring back to. Don’t read the passage one verse at a time. Read it in paragraph form.
Michelle, if you would like, you have my email address.

Of course, it would be nice if he turns out to be “super-smart”, but even more important is to raise him to be kind. My prayer for him is that God would give him “…a heart that beats for You, Lord, that longs to follow You every day of his life.” And that God would give him a discerning & wise spirit.

I agree with Phos about the passage. You have to read all the story of Korah and Balaam to get the jist of it, too. We are not saved to indulge in sin, which these men thought was what it was all about and were teaching others that also. Not everyone who claims to be saved is saved. I do not believe the passage is saying you will lose your salvation, but God does see and He does judge.
I think the whole thing about the gun was totally wrong. Is is illegal for this man to HAVE a gun? I don’t see anything suggesting child abuse whatsoever. This child could have been discribing a policeman or a soldier. They may have to shoot at the bad guys. This whole concept of never letting children pretend cops and robbers etc. is sad, IMO.
We just bought a used car. Glad to have the job done, since it is one neither my husband or I enjoy. We did buy from a nephew who works at a local dealership. He has been selling a lot these days.

[NOTE: This is going to come flying into this thread from out of the blue today, but just wanted to make a note that since Lent starts Monday, I'll be off World Mag Blog through Pascha. I'm not giving it up for Lent, per se, just wanting to pray more while I fast more during this season, and need to make time for that. Good strength to you all this Lenten season, and as you prepare for Pascha. Oh, Orthodox Easter is different than western Easter this year, so my return would be after April 15.
There's a prayer we pray in the Eastern church, a couple times a day, from the beginning of Lent to Pascha. I hope you will enjoy it's beauty, and appreciate its contrition. May the Lord have mercy on us all.
O Lord and Master of my life,Take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power and idle talk. But give rather the spirit of chastity, meekness of mind, patience and love to Thy servant. Yea O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions and not to judge my brother, for blessed art thou unto ages of ages. Amen.
Prayer of St. Ephraim

QDC, sorry to hear about your Dad. Prayers on the way.

NW Julianna, I also enjoy hearing of your Eastern Orthodox tradition. I live in an area with a large Greek Orthodox Community, so I somewhat understand although not all the way. I have enjoyed the times I have been included in their celebrations.

QDC, my prayers for your dad, too. Mine is not doing so well these days either. It is hard to see for me, as I am sure it is for you. I pray that infection will clear up quickly and he is home soon.

Enjoy your fathers while you have them. I would give anything to have mine back…

Michelle @17 – Jude wanted to write about salvation, but was led by the Holy Spirit to write about apostasy.
Jude begins the letter in verses 1 and 2 with assurance to true believers. Genuine believers are beloved, sanctified, preserved in Jesus Christ, called, and experience mercy, peace and love.
Apostates, false believers, are described in verse 4. They are ungodly, coarse and lewd, they deny the Lord God and the Lord Jesus.
Jude uses 7 examples of apostates.
1. Israel refusing to enter the promised land, then dying in the 40 years wilderness wanderings.
2. Angels who rebelled against God, and are reserved for judgment.
3. Sodom and Gomorrah judged for sensual sin.
4. The apostates of his day whom he describes as dreamers (possibly following their own dreams rather than following God), immoral, reject authority, and speak evil of those in authority.
5. Cain – refused to bring a blood sacrifice
6. Balaam – his love for money motivated him to help Israel’s enemies.
7. Korah – contradicted God’s authority, and stood against Moses and Aaron.
I’m know there is much more to this than I know, but it appears to be a lesson that has a good opportunity to encourage true believers, and warn those who are just playing at Christianity.

Leo, as for my taxes — nope, I finished those Jan. 22 or so!
Kim, does the church near you have a big Greek festival? We went to one in Seattle a couple years ago and it was lovely. Our church is not of the Greek background, but Antiochian, so we’d have to do some kind of Middle Eastern or Arab. festival (we have an Arab gal in our parish, and I bet she’d love it). Maybe some day — we’re a small mission parish right now.
A good Lord’s Day to you all.

Just wondering what the resident lawyer thinks about this?
Super Tuesday is just around the bend. I hope this trivial matter can all be straightened out by then since it was neglected in the previous election. Seems like I slightly recall someone was trying to make it an issue for McCain back then. I suppose it is only fair that donkeys and elephants be treated the same.
Report comment to moderator
Look, I’d like to see the issue ruled on, and the law should be followed, but you can’t unring a bell. There’s something in my memory that says this issue went up to the Supreme Court from another state.

The judge in the Zombie Muhammad case has spoken. He is a Lutheran. He serves as a reservist in the military (he’s been to either Iraq and/or Afghanistan. (This news is over at the Volokh.) I agree with the thread poster there that he had no business dressing down the victim. I still think his language was vulgar, and I still think when people come to our country, it is OUR culture that should prevail. We tolerate stupid, offensive speech — that’s what the First Amendment is about — and this muslim who came here should have been told too bad, so sad.
Report comment to moderator
In other words, he should have been told to adapt to OUR culture. We don’t cotton to what he did.

Happy Sunday, everyone!
If you think of it, pray for the elections in Senegal today. There is a lot of unrest due to the incumbent (who is either 86 or 90+ depending on who you ask!) running for a 3rd 7-year term. I expect there will be problems no matter what happens. The next few days could be interesting. The border of Senegal is about 5 miles north of me (and as the crow flies about 40 miles south of me–look at a map and you’ll understand)

Maybe it’s only a 5-year term. They might have changed that at the same time as they amended the Constitution to only allow a president to have 2 terms. The current president says that his first term doesn’t count since he was elected before they changed the rules.

Every Fall we have Greek Fest. It lasts three days over a weekend. Even we non-Greeks attend. I used to be good friends with Constantino–He is BG’s Uncle Tino. We used to work together and work-out together. He also used to rat me out to George when I was pregnant and tell him everything I had lifted at work. I had to stop working out because I pulled a hamstring muscle and he and George started working out together. During Lent he was only eating bread and drinking water. I made him go eat pizza with me. He scraped off all the cheese, pepperoni, and sauce and just ate the crust. I ate everything he didn’t. I think BG was about a year old before I ate pizza again. We were always included in Greek Easter. His mother also sent me ONE piece of baklava a week while I was pregnant.

She didn’t want me to get too fat. Over the years we drifted apart. I used to tell him that the women he wanted only existed in magazines and they airbrushed them. He would laugh and tell me what a catch he was. I would reply that he was 35, bald, and lived with his parents. He finally married at 40 and has a wonderful wife and son.

Amen to (most of) this (”Afghanistan: Let’s Get Out”):
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2012/02/afghanistan-lets-get-out.php
From the post:
“The country, if it can properly be called such, is hundreds of years behind modern civilization. I don’t think nation-building is always a bad idea, but a certain amount and quality of raw material is required. In Afghanistan, the prerequisites for successful nation-building are absent. …
“Currently, as we noted last month, President Obama seems to be setting up a negotiated ‘peace’ agreement of some sort with a Taliban front group. That, too, is a terrible idea. Let’s not negotiate anything or engage in any pretense; let’s just get out, while killing a few more terrorists on the way to the door.”

Excuse me for going to a totally frivolous topic as I click in on some coverage of the red carpet to the Oscars. I do not follow current movies except for the unavoidable publicity about the best or worst of the lot. But I do get a kick out of some of the interviews, popular fashions and makeup. And I do look for my old favorites in the audience, too. It’s a very different world that I’m so glad to be on the outside looking in, although I am pulling for The Help and The Artist.
I’m glad Billy Crystal is back, but I won’t set my hopes too high and will wait for the highlights tomorrow.

Thanks for your perspective, NJL. I must have missed the story when it was previously addressed.
