Good Morning. I am all caught up on sleep. I hope everyone has a great day. Yesterday I thought of a really great question of the day to post today. I can’t remember what it was now, but let me assure you it was brilliant.

Pe: “Picture From Life’s Other Side”. Good rendition, but you could tell Hank 3 was reciting it. Halk was telling us about it. It’s a generation thing. None of you remember the real Hank Williams. He was the “rock star” of 1950.
Same thing could be said about Eddie Arnold. And later Hank Snow and some others.

Yes, Chas there is a difference. I enjoyed your link. I like Sr and III but not so much on Jr.
I find it amazing that almost 60 years after his death Hank Sr is still timeless and if you listen to Country music today he still gets mentioned.
I thought you might enjoy those last two links since III had on his grandfather’s suit and moves a lot like him.

What’s origin of “Winning hnads down?”

Good morning. Today is me & Scott’s 13th anniversary. We have plans to go to dinner tonight at our favorite restaurant. It’s been a tough year in our marriage; we’ve been going to marriage counseling for about a year and it’s helped a lot. We’re in a much better place now than we were a year ago and for that I’m truly grateful.
I live in Texas where we have our own genre of country music. My brother played drums in a band in high school that included a guy named Bruce Robison who now writes songs that have been covered by folks like the Dixie Chicks (Travelin’ Soldier), Tim McGraw (Angry All the Time), and George Strait (Wrapped and others). Bruce isn’t a great singer, but he’s an amazing song-writer.

From phrases.org:
Jockeys need to keep a tight rein in order to encourage their horse to run. Anyone who is so far ahead that he can afford to slacken off and still win he can drop his hands and loosen the reins – hence winning ‘hands down’. This is recorded from the mid 19th century; for example, ‘Pips’ Lyrics & Lays, 1867:
“There were good horses in those days, as he can well recall, But Barker upon Elepoo, hands down, shot by them all.”
It began to be used in a figurative sense, to denote an easy win in other contexts, from the early 20th century.

Enjoyed the link, Chas. I believe my husband does a really good job on Hank Williams songs. He is also a good writer as is my daughter, IMO. He bemoans the lack of pathos in so much of the modern music. We certainly have access to a good variety today, though, through a lot of different means.
I was at a country/bluegrass jam and laughed when one of the players said he couldn’t make it through all of the “25th Anniversary Production of The Phantom of the Opera,” which played on our PBS station. I thought it was awesome and totally enjoyed every minute. Each to his own…

That would leave only 4 very small churches left for the Presbyterian Church USA for the southern part of Colorado. The reason for these Churches to leave is gay rights and sexual in which the Presbyterian Church UAS is now openly supporting.

Also, from today’s WSJ by a Georgetown Law graduate and former chief counsel of the House Subcommittee on the Constitution:
Last week a law student went to Congress looking for a handout. She wants free birth-control pills that the government should make her Catholic school give them to her.
Should Miss Fluke give up a cup or two of coffee at Starbucks each month to pay for her birth control, or should Georgetown give up its religion? Even a first-year law student should know where the Constitution comes down on that.

LOUISE @23 – This incident sparked a lot of talk about Rush Limbaugh’s response being so base and hateful. I agree it was wrong on his part to attack the person instead of debating the ideas.

Louise,
I think if we don’t let the Fluke story drop we give a default advantage to the radical leftists. The Fluke story may have started out as part of the conscience protections angle, but it has quickly morphed into no more than a distraction from that debate. Which is what Dems want. This being news takes the eyes from what’s important. While everyone concentrates on this, they’re not concentrating on what we should be. Like conscience protections, high unemployment, lack of jobs, an economy in the toilet, an overreaching federal govt, and so on. This benefits Obama because we’re wasting time with this nonsense instead of talking about what a failure Obama is. Keeping this story going benefits no one except Obysmal, the incompetent fraud of a president. Just like they planned it.

Thanks, LShaffer, for the “hands down” explanation. I never would have guessed that one (but had no one else done so, I was going to google it myself).
ANNMS, happy anniversary.
I’m off work today, waiting for the dryer repair guy to come. I’m hoping it’s fixable (he thought it might just be a broken belt when I called yesterday). If it’s not, I’ll be shopping for a washer/dryer as this set is 22 years old, after all. But I’m hoping I can get another year or more service out of them.
Didn’t check Leo’s link in 24, but it looks like the Kirsten Powers column from Sunday. The fact that so many vile and outrageous slurs have been hurled by these guys on the left toward conservative women should temper the criticism of Rush.
(Although, as I said before, Rush was wrong-wrong-wrong to say what he did. But as Beckel said last night on a news show I was watching, he apologized, let’s just move on. Instead, of course, everyone’s going after his advertisers now. So then I think it’s entirely legitimate to call for the president to return Bill Maher’s $1 million “contribution,” too.
)
If we’re going to raise the level of discourse (which would be a good thing), it has to be applied fairly to both sides, no?
Such a double standard out there.
Report comment to moderator
And one more thing. Someone yesterday stated that Fluke is not a public figure. I disagree. When you put yourself out there in a public venue and add your “testimony” to those public proceedings, you just made yourself a public figure. Obviously someone needs to explain this concept to idiots like Steny Hoyer.
http://hotair.com/archives/2012/03/05/steny-hoyer-to-sandra-fluke-you-should-probably-sue-rush-you-know/
“Given the insane mileage Democrats are getting from this story, he could probably get David Boies to represent her pro bono. Anything to keep the headlines coming.
Someone, I forget who, tweeted a few days ago that they’d happily bet ten grand that Fluke will get a cameo speaking appearance on one of the first nights of the Democratic convention. Anyone want to take that bet? Bear in mind, Obama’s already dialing up women’s colleges and inviting himself to speak at commencement in hopes of squeezing every last drop of war-on-women goodness out of this fiasco. At the rate we’re going, Fluke might introduce him at his acceptance speech.
“I’d like to see her take him to court,” said Hoyer, who was in Selma for the annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee. “She is not a public figure and, for that reason, she should be able to sue for slander, libel or whatever else might be involved.”…
Joseph Lowery, former president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, said he is familiar with “vintage Rush Limbaugh.”
“(Fluke) has ample room to sue him and I hope she does because he’s gotten rich off the mess he causes,” said Lowery, who joined Hoyer and other national leaders in condemnation of Limbaugh.
She’s got two problems trying to beat him on a defamation claim. One: Hoyer’s probably wrong when he says she’s not a “public figure” for First Amendment purposes. Courts will treat someone as a “limited-purpose public figure” under certain circumstances; according to the EFF’s summary of the law, typically that applies to someone who “(a) voluntarily participates in a discussion about a public controversy, and (b) has access to the media to get his or her own view across.” Fluke voluntarily testified before Congress and, lord knows, she has all the access to the media she could ever want. Assuming she’s a “limited-purpose public figure,” that means she’d have to show that Rush was more than just negligent in calling her a “@#$%” but acted with reckless disregard for whether it was true. Not an impossible standard to meet but more difficult, and his extended apology today may affect the calculus.”

If it weren’t for double standards, the left would have no standards at all. They are showing themselves to be completely unable to maintain any decency, or to hold themselves to any standard of decency at all, especially not the ones they’re trying to hold Rush to. They don’t expect it from themselves or their followers. The reason being if you don’t have any standards, you can’t be held to any standard. Stupid? Yes, but such is the liberal mindset. To them it makes perfect sense.

Pastor Roy you asked about Orlando in May:
Hot, Humid, Hot. It is not yet miserably hot like it will be in July and August. Pack cool breathable fabrics, a light jacket and plenty of sunscreen. I would buy the Waterbabies sunscreen with at least an SPF of 50. It is more sweat proof.

Recently I was having a conversation with friends on Facebook. R and I have been friends since 3rd grade. G joined us in 6th and B in 11th.
R was complaining about wanting Botox and some other treatments from the sun damage she had. We are all planning to retire together some place warm and tropical. G is a make-up artist in Los Angeles.
I was explaining my strict sunscreen regimen of SPF 50 on the face and décolletage, 45 on the body, 15 on the legs, and 4 on the feet. G popped in that I was confusing him and he couldn’t talk to me anymore that night. I let him know I hadn’t even started on the rotation schedule. R assured me that the age spot on my hand was simply a large freckle.
Just to mess with them I told them a couple of days later that I had found SPF 70! B informed me that was a sweater.
So Pastor Roy, anything you want to know about sunscreen just ask me. The first layer goes over the entire body while you are still in the bathroom from your shower. This lets it soak in. The next layer goes on when you get to your destination. Re-apply about every hour to hour and a half. Sun burns are miserable and you don’t want to take up your time at Disney soaking in a baking soda bath. Do buy some aloe vera gel when you get to Orlando so that IF even after you have followed my strict instructions you do get burned you can soothe it that night and start over the next day.

Some of my family is made up of the kind of ultra-liberals we talk about here. My niece & SIL believe in same-sex marriage, a woman has a right to open sexuality & as many sex partners as she wants, not only is there heterosexual & homosexual but other sexualities as well (including something called “gender fluid), & abortion is almost a sacred right to them.
In this debate over who should pay for contraceptives, they believe it is strictly a women’s health issue & women should be able to have them at little or no cost.
(Yes, in many cases, women are on birth control pills for health reasons, but I wish that could be separated from the issue.)
It seems that they, & so many other liberals, are unable to see these issues from any other point of view. It kind of scares me!
My concern is that many will vote for Obama based solely on his stances on social issues. The media is certainly trying to frame the election that way, ignoring the economic disaster he is.

Being from SoCal I’ve almost had my fill of sunshine at this point. But at least we don’t get that hideous humidity.
Great primer on sunscreen, Kim.
Unfortunately, none of us out here used it when we were growing up. It would all just defeat the purpose, you know? (The grand purpose being to be tan.) The self-tanning products now are actually quite good and I usually make use of those in the summer time (along with with LOTS of sunscreen now that I’ve wised up!).
Louise, you’re right about the other side literally seizing on this issue. They’re delirious that this has all fallen into their laps (thanks, Rush). But it could have a pretty short shelf life as soon as the comments from those on the left aimed at female conservatives are rolled out over and over again.

The bias in the media isn’t always about what they print. Sometimes the bias is shown by what they don’t. Be honest, if this was Obama instead of Santorum, even Fluke would be taking a back seat to it.
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tom-blumer/2012/03/06/psst-rick-santorum-credited-saving-childs-life-establishment-press-ignor
“Have we reached a point where a positive story about a political candidate whose views are considered unacceptable by the media elites won’t get widely covered even when it’s virtually dropped in their laps?
One can’t help but suspect that’s the case with Rick Santorum. February 13, the Detroit Free Press carried a moving story by Kathleen Gray about how the parents of a Michigan girl with Trisomy 18, the same disease from which his Santorum’s daughter Bella suffers, credit the former senator’s detailed and determined suggestions in the midst of their daughter’s fight with saving her life.”
Here’s the original story.
http://www.freep.com/article/20120213/NEWS05/202130359/Rick-Santorum-s-advice-helps-metro-Detroit-family-with-Trisomy-18-child
“”He had already been through all of it,” Smith said, ticking off the respiratory distress, the heart problems, the feeding tubes that become a daily part of Trisomy 18 children.
Santorum told Smith he needed to get a BPAP machine, a breathing machine that would help keep Faith’s airways open. Smith needed to get a sleep study done on Faith, Santorum said, to determine whether she suffered from sleep apnea, a disorder in which a sleeping person temporarily stops breathing, which is especially dangerous for a Trisomy 18 child.
But Smith was distracted and acknowledges he was almost dismissive of Santorum’s advice, even though the politician had stopped to help on a busy morning when he was already running late.
“He sensed that I wasn’t really listening, and he got really stern with me,” Smith said. “He said, ‘Look, you need to do this. If you don’t, you’re going to lose your daughter.’ ”
More treatment options
From the Smiths’ experience, many doctors have rarely seen cases of Trisomy 18 and are sometimes stumped for a course of treatment. Smith took the list of machines and treatments suggested by Santorum to Mott.
Doctors discovered that Faith did have sleep apnea and wildly swinging her arms at night, which her parents had thought was an attempt at playing, was really Faith’s way to stay awake so she wouldn’t stop breathing in her sleep.”
You know if Obama had helped these folks, you’d never here the end of it. But since it was Santorum, all we hear are crickets.

PM Netanyahu also has a polity to keep in mind — most Israelis do not want to act without the U.S. His Generals, reportedly, don’t think attack is the greatest idea ever. We’re at a point now where Iran is actually beginning to feel the effects of global sanctions — even China has sharply cut oil purchases. If Netanyahu is wise then he will use global unity on Iran and not break it with precipitous action, regardless of the timing of U.S. elections.

We know now that the sanctions were having an effect, and that WMD were not being produced. So sanctions can shut down a tyrant, and what is more, the hardships produced by economic sanctions can make the people even less likely to support their government.

Phos,
It doesn’t matter if they are feeling the effects of sanctions. What matters is are they doing what they were designed to do, which was force Iran away from a nuclear weapons program. They have not done that. At all. They may have caused the Iranian currency to devalue, but so what. That’s not what they were intended to do. Iran is still rushing headfirst to try and build a nuclear weapon. The sanctions have been useless in stopping them. They’ve also already violated many of these sanctions.
You mention Iraq. You say they had an effect. They did. But not the desired one. And everyone knows how the UN and others manipulated the Oil for Food program. Sucessful sanctions? No. Not at all.
And if you’re waiting for the Iranian people to be miserable enough to rise up against it’s rulers, you’ll be waiting long past when Iran has nuclear weapons. So the sanctions, while they may have made things tougher for Iran, are useless.
And before anyone suggests that I’m touting military action against Iran, I’m not. We need to stay out of it. Let Israel do what they feel is in their best interests. Let them deal with it if there is consequences to bombing them should they chose that as well. The only way we should be involved is if they attack our servicemen. Otherwise, it’s not our fight.
http://townhall.com/tipsheet/katehicks/2012/02/16/netanyahu_sanctions_against_iran_arent_working
”
Netanyahu also addressed the Iranian nuclear threat, saying the sanctions imposed by the international community on the Islamic Republic “are not working.”
Iran is the most irresponsible force in the world, he said, claiming the sactions imposed on the Islamic Republic have not had an effect so far. According to Netanyahu, the regime in Tehran violates every resolution and has no respect for international norms.
He added that Iran’s race towards nuclear weapons should concern the US and every other country. Nuclear arms in the hands of the Iranian regime is a cause for great concern to the US and Israel, he said.
Netanyahu’s words aren’t news; Iran has consistently violated United Nations regulations regarding development of nuclear capabilities, and both President Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah Khamenei have sworn that they will not halt the program. However, Israel’s Prime Minister is illustrating real leadership in the face of a deadly confrontation. Hopefully, the international community will start putting real, effective pressure on Iran to stop its nuclear development.”

“Officials in key parts of the Obama administration are increasingly convinced that sanctions will not deter Tehran from pursuing its nuclear programme, and believe that the US will be left with no option but to launch an attack on Iran or watch Israel do so.
The president has made clear in public, and in private to Israel, that he is determined to give sufficient time for recent measures, such as the financial blockade and the looming European oil embargo, to bite deeper into Iran’s already battered economy before retreating from its principal strategy to pressure Tehran.
But there is a strong current of opinion within the administration – including in the Pentagon and the state department – that believes sanctions are doomed to fail, and that their principal use now is in delaying Israeli military action, as well as reassuring Europe that an attack will only come after other means have been tested.
“The White House wants to see sanctions work. This is not the Bush White House. It does not need another conflict,” said an official knowledgeable on Middle East policy. “Its problem is that the guys in Tehran are behaving like sanctions don’t matter, like their economy isn’t collapsing, like Israel isn’t going to do anything.
“Sanctions are all we’ve got to throw at the problem. If they fail then it’s hard to see how we don’t move to the ‘in extremis’ option.”
The White House has said repeatedly that all options are on the table, including the use of force to stop Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon, but that for now the emphasis is firmly on diplomacy and sanctions.
But long-held doubts among US officials about whether the Iranians can be enticed or cajoled into serious negotiations have been reinforced by recent events.
“We don’t see a way forward,” said one official. “The record shows that there is nothing to work with.”"

Roy, Aj, et al
Please see Lloyd’s list for raw data on shipping and tanker insurance coverage. I could send you to several other news sources, but as you will only accept news sources that echo your POV, that becomes a bit difficult. If you prefer to do the research for yourself, then I’d recommend oil industry trade magazines and dailies. You can also look up raw import data which will show that purchase of Iranian oil have fallen off in India, China, South Korea and Singapore. EU embargo begins on July 1.
AJ
The banking sanctions don’t even really begin until late June, and the EU embargo on oil not until July 1, so it’s kind of difficult to judge that sanctions are not working. Its too soon to tell unless a person is looking for a reason to go to war now.
And AJ — the difference between my post and Roy’s has to do with tone. Specifically the word “lies”. If you are going to say that what another has posted is a lie, then it would seem appropriate to ask the accuser to deliver with fact.
@66 Phos — Oil for food did not work because the sanctions were not deployed by all countries. France in particular as well as China and Russia. Iran so far seems to be a different case, but it is too soon to say for certain.

Coyote,
From the link at #78.
“President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s claim this week that Iran loaded its first domestically-made fuel rod into a nuclear reactor, and Iran’s threat to cut oil supplies to six European countries, were read as further evidence that Tehran remains defiantly committed to its nuclear programme. That view was strengthened by the latest Iranian offer to negotiate with the UN security council in a letter that appeared to contain no significant new concessions.
If Obama were to conclude that there is no choice but to attack Iran, he is unlikely to order it before the presidential election in November unless there is an urgent reason to do so. The question is whether the Israelis will hold back that long.
Earlier this month, the US defence secretary, Leon Panetta, told the Washington Post that he thought the window for an Israeli attack on Iran is between April and June. But other official analysts working on Iran have identified what one described as a “sweet spot”, where the mix of diplomacy, political timetables and practical issues come together to suggest that if Israel launches a unilateral assault it is more likely in September or October, although they describe that as a “best guess”.”
So if the “window” for Israel to act in it’s own best interest is between April and June, how will further sanctions that won’t kick in until June or July be of any help? Too late to do anything to prevent an attack on Iran by Israel. How does this do anything to help at all?

And who does all the handwringing by the US and UN benefit? Iran, because while they dilly dally, Iran presses on with trying to build a nuclear weapon.
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4199220,00.html
“Israeli state officials were disappointed Tuesday with the results of the Netanyahu-Obama meeting at the White House on Monday. “There were no surprises,” a senior state official said. “It was clear from recent months that there are differences between ourselves and the Americans. We have different perspectives when it comes to the question of time and red lines.”
It was claimed that the Americans view the Iranian issue in the context of the upcoming presidential elections. “It’s a bad message for the issue and a good message for the Iranians,” a state official said.”
“”We want the Americans to change their rhetoric vis-à-vis the Iranians. The US says that when Khamenei decides to make a bomb that would be crossing a red line. How do we know for sure he’s made the decision? What happens after that? There will be a new discussion on whether this is credible or not.”
“Israeli concerns primarily stem from past differences with the US on the Iranian nuclear issue. For years Israel asserted that Tehran was working on a military nuclear program while Washington refused to accept the Israeli intelligence analysis. It took the Americans two years to become persuaded.
“The Iranians are charging at nuclear capabilities at full force and even the IAEA is falling in line with the Israeli intelligence evaluations,” a senior state official said. “That is why the US stance is problematic.”"

What!? You mean Buffett was lying when he said he wanted to pay more taxes? I’m shocked! OK, not really. Ok, OK, not at all.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/01/warren-buffett-jet-company-_n_1313351.html?ref=tw
“As the parties battle over taxes, the deficit and economic inequality, two arguments that have been marshaled to advocate for the Democratic position are that taxpayers should not be subsidizing private jet travel and that Warren Buffett’s tax bill is way too low — lower, Democrats and Buffett himself have repeatedly noted, than his secretary’s.
Buffett’s belabored secretary has become such a ubiquitous gambit in the tax debate that she was invited to attend the president’s State of the Union address as an honored guest. Buffett’s pleading with Congress to hike his tax rate has grown so incessant that Republicans routinely suggest the Omaha billionaire should simply, as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie put it, “write a check and shut up.”
But when a Buffett company had a chance to tackle both problems, it chose to do the opposite. And it spent handsomely on K Street to get it done.
Berkshire Hathaway-owned NetJets Inc. spent more than $2.5 million on a squadron of lobbyists who successfully crafted tax legislation to benefit a handful of private jet companies, according to a HuffPost analysis of lobbying disclosure records.”

The Real – The point I was trying to make was that the production of WMDs did stop in Iraq, but we were told by the same people who now say sanctions won’t stop Iran, that Iraq still had WMDs. The sense of deja vu is powerful and I am as little inclined to believe their version of events as I am to believe those who deny that Iran has any nuclear capacity.
Also, the Iranian people have already rioted against their president – they had an Arab Spring before the Arab Spring, only it was crushed. If I were an international leader, I would tap into that, instead of seeing Iran as being Ahmadinejab.

AJ,
@78 — that sounds like most of the foreign policy analysis I’ve read. The one thing to add would be the need to keep coaltions together. So far Iran has been fairly well isolated within the OIC oil producing countries and the U.S. managed to gain even Russian and Chinese non-objection in the Security Council. If the speculation is correct that in the end sanctions won’t work, then retaining isolation of Iran will be a key ingredient of any successful push for military action.
On the politics — I’m not so sure that miltary action would cost Obama anything in a general election and may actually help — Americans tend to rally at such times. And it’d be hard for the republicans to object to what they themselves are calling for. I think U.S. electoral politics are a wash in this particular case.

Phos,
Or Iraq’s WMDs went out on truck convoys to Syria as some have alleged. We know Syria has WMDs. Where’d they get ‘em from?
http://pjmedia.com/blog/satellite-photos-support-testimony-that-iraqi-wmd-went-to-syria/
“Ha’aretz has revived the mystery surrounding the inability to find weapons of mass destruction stockpiles in Iraq, the most commonly cited justification for Operation Iraqi Freedom and one of the most embarrassing episodes for the United States. Satellite photos of a suspicious site in Syria are providing new support for the reporting of a Syrian journalist who briefly rocked the world with his reporting that Iraq’s WMD had been sent to three sites in Syria just before the invasion commenced.
The newspaper reveals that a 200 square-kilometer area in northwestern Syria has been photographed by satellites at the request of a Western intelligence agency at least 16 times, the most recent being taken in January. The site is near Masyaf, and it has at least five installations and hidden paths leading underneath the mountains. This supports the reporting of Nizar Nayouf, an award-winning Syrian journalist who said in 2004 that his sources confirmed that Saddam Hussein’s WMDs were in Syria.
One of the three specific sites he mentioned was an underground base underneath Al-Baida, which is one kilometer south of Masyaf. This is a perfect match. The suspicious features in the photos and the fact that a Western intelligence agency is so interested in the site support Nayouf’s reporting, showing that his sources in Syria did indeed have access to specific information about secret activity that is likely WMD-related. Richard Radcliffe, one of my co-writers at WorldThreats.com, noticed that Masyaf is located on a road that goes from Hamah, where there is an airfield sufficient to handle relatively large aircraft, into Lebanon and the western side of the Bekaa Valley, another location said to house Iraqi weapons.
It seems to be commonly accepted that Iraq did not have WMDs at all. The intelligence was obviously flawed, but the book has not been closed on what actually happened. The media blasted the headline that Charles Duelfer, the head of the Iraq Survey Group tasked with finding out if Saddam had WMDs, concluded that a transfer did not occur. In reality, his report said they were “unable to complete its investigation and is unable to rule out the possibility that WMD was evacuated to Syria before the war” due to the poor security situation.
Although no conclusion was made, Duelfer has since said that he is “convinced” that no WMD went to Syria. He is a competent and credible individual, but there is evidence that key information on this possibility was not received by the Iraq Survey Group, which had many of its own problems.”

http://hotair.com/archives/2010/06/05/obama-dni-choice-believes-syrians-have-saddams-wmd/
“Well, maybe he did at one point, so expect this to become a big deal in James Clapper’s confirmation hearings to replace Dennis Blair as the Director of National Intelligence. Washington Times reporter Eli Lake did a little research on Barack Obama’s choice for the thankless position (Clapper would be the fourth DNI in five years) and discovered a nugget that comes straight out of the so-called neocon argument for war against Saddam Hussein:
President Obama’s choice to be the next director of national intelligence supported the view that Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq sent weapons and documents to Syria in the weeks before the 2003 U.S. invasion.
A senior U.S. intelligence official said retired Air Force Lt. Gen. James R. Clapper, a former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and current undersecretary of defense for intelligence, will be the next DNI. A formal announcemente is expected as early as Saturday. …
Gen. Clapper headed the National Geo-spatial Intelligence Agency between September 2001 to June 2006. The NGA is responsible for creating maps and terrestrial imagery and also assesses what is called “measurement and signature intelligence,” or MASINT, the intelligence function of analyzing such things as radar signals and the composition of air particles, soil samples and other physical characteristics of the earth.
On Iraq, Gen. Clapper said in an interview with The Washington Times in 2004 that “I think probably in the few months running up prior to the onset of combat that … there was probably an intensive effort to disperse into private homes, move documentation and materials out of the country. I think there are any number of things that they would have done.”
The comments came amid the debate over Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction programs, which some U.S. officials had said were moved out of Iraq prior to the invasion of Iraq with the assistance of Russian military intelligence forces.
From this description, it seems as though Clapper parsed his words carefully. He never mentions WMD, at least not in the portion quoted by Lake. However, there was no real reason to cart anything else out of Iraq just prior to the invasion. Saddam Hussein certainly had plenty of conventional weapons, and no one had suggested that Saddam needed to disarm himself of those. In fact, it would make no sense at all for Saddam to have moved conventional weapons out of Iraq just as the US poised to invade.”

Speaking of my liberal family members (as I was earlier today), there was an exchange on Facebook that kind of astounded me. Some conservatives have complained of liberals having an attitude of superiority. Well, maybe they’re right…
Niece shared about a friend not respecting her, I think on the issue of homosexuality &/or same-sex marriage.
Niece’s uncle (from other side of family) – “You won’t always get the respect you deserve. Just keep reminding yourself you’re superior to those who don’t get it. More intelligent, more considerate, etc. etc.”
Me – ?” ‘Superior’? If it were me, I would phrase that another way. The thought of feeling superior to others rubs me the wrong way.
Niece – “Lol well you are superior to people who ‘don’t get it.’ Because you’re above them. It’s about being the bigger person/above the issue/superior to the issue.”

And let’s be clear on something else. I haven’t called Georgetown to see if they pay for birth control pills when being used to treat her medical conditions. I have no idea if they do or don’t…
Now, all of this is what I should have told you last week, ’cause this is what happened. I use satire. I use absurdity to illustrate the absurd. The story at the Cybercast News Service characterized a portion of her testimony as sounding like (based on her own financial figures) she was engaging in sexual activity so often she couldn’t afford it. I focused on that because it was simple trying to persuade people, change people’s minds…
I descended to their level, using names and exaggerations to describe Sandra Fluke. It’s what we have come to know and expect of them, but it’s way beneath me. And it’s way beneath you. It was wrong, and that’s why I’ve apologized, ’cause I succumbed.”

I think secular conservatives have no confidence in their convictions. If they really held to them firmly, they wouldn’t care what the other side did, and would just carry on with their principles. A secular conservative really has just as little foundation for his/her beliefs as a secular liberal. Therefore, they panic when they see the other side apparently winning, and begin to employ unethical tactics to stop them.
As Christians, we have no need to panic, because we are not trying to conquer the world, but rather seeking to represent Jesus Christ. Therefore, to use the tactics of the world to gain a point is not only unecessary, but also dishonouring to Him. “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:” (Ephesians 4:31)
